When abnormal cells develop and spread in a woman's cervix (the lower part of the uterus), it leads to cervical cancer. Experts say when detected early, there are high chances of complete recovery. Unfortunately, symptoms of cervical cancer rarely show up in the beginning. Instead, they usually start showing when the cancer is fast progressing. Symptoms include unusual vaginal discharge, unexpected bleeding between periods, bleeding even after reaching menopause, bleeding or unbearable pain while having sex. The top cause of cervical cancer is the human papillomavirus (HPV), which is a large group of viruses. Almost 40 types of HPV can infect the genital area. Experts say that these HPV infections usually tend to get cured on their own. however, if they keep getting recurrent, it can lead to changes in the cells of the cervix, which may then lead to cancer. Studies say that HPV is so common that every sexually active person will get it at least once in their life. While condoms lower the risk of getting HPV, they don't fully protect one against the virus. It is when a high-risk strain of HPV stays back in the body, that it can cause abnormal cells to develop in the cervix and these over time, may become cancerous. The Pap Smear test is the best ways for early detection of cervical cancer. A swab of the cervix is taken. And it can reveal abnormal cells, sometimes even before the cancer appears. Once a woman crosses 30, experts recommend a pap test every three years. If your test reveals abnormal cells that are precancerous, your doctor can remove them so that they don't develop into cancer. Another test, the HPV DNA test checks for the presence of high-risk forms of HPV. An abnormal pap smear test leads to a biopsy, in which cervical tissue is removed so that it can be examined for abnormal changes, precancerous cells or cancer cells. There are five stages in cervical cancer — stage 0 is when cancer cells are found only on the surface of the cervix. In Stage I, the cancer hasn't spread beyond the cervix and in stage II, the tumour has spread to the upper part of the vagina. In stage II, the tumour extends to the lower part of the vagina. Finally, in stage IV, the tumour has reached the bladder or rectum, or cancer cells have spread to other parts of the body. Experts say that surgery is recommended to remove any tissue that might contain cancer. A combination of radiation and chemotherapy is also usually done. With sitting being deemed the new smoking, we give you a reality check of the damage that over-sitting incurs on you. That office chair, couch, cushion or bean bag isn't the real culprit. It's your lazy habit of parking yourself in a spot that is silently ringing the death knell for you. It's tough to avoid sitting if you work in an office environment (unless you have a standing desk like some new-age workplaces abroad). On your day off, you tend to laze around the house or, worse, be a smug couch potato, chomping on fast food in front of the television as an excuse for leisure. A recent study found that people who sat for more than 11 hours a day had a 40% higher chance of dying within three years. The risk was much lower for working executives who exercised five hours — or more — a week. However, exercise doesn't negate the following dangers. Lower body problems: Poor circulation in the legs can lead to swollen ankles, varicose veins and more hazardous DVT (deep vein thrombosis). Health experts also blame the rise in cases of osteoporosis to desk jobs and lack of activities like running that stimulate hip and lower-body bones to grow thicker and stronger. Scientists partially attribute the recent surge in cases of to lack of activity. Chronic disease: Did you know that if you sit for more than four hours a day, you are more likely to have a chronic disease like high blood pressure, heart disease, diabetes and cancer? A survey in Australia found that the more time participants spent sitting, the more likely they were to have one of these chronic diseases, regardless of their BMI (body mass index) or even an exercise routine. Poor mental well-being: Who doesn't want to unwind on the couch after a taxing day at work? However, it could be counter-productive for your mind. A study analysing the association between mental well-being and a sedentary lifestyle found that non-occupational sitting time — vegetating in front of the TV, watching films on a laptop, for instance — had a negative impact of women's mental health in particular. Mental functioning slows down too. Kidney disease: Those who sit less have a lower risk of chronic kidney disease. This was found to be especially true for women — when they reduce their sitting time from a full eight-hour workday to only three, their risk for kidney disease falls by 30% while for men it is 15%. The end result could be complete kidney failure. Adult metabolic syndrome: Obesity is a pretty obvious outcome, but the whammy is Metabolic Syndrome that accompanies it. A combination of obesity, low levels of good cholesterol, high blood pressure or hyperglycaemia puts you at higher risk of metabolic syndrome, which could lead to serious conditions like heart disease, stroke and diabetes. The risk is as high as 73%! Researchers found that reducing TV and computer exposure to less than one hour a day outside office could reduce your chances of succumbing to adult metabolic syndrome. Muscle degeneration: With extended sitting, the glutes get soft since they are used to doing nothing. This can affect your stride. Your abdominal muscles keep you straight when you are standing or walking, but bend forward or slump back in a chair, and your back muscles tighten while your abs go lax. This deadly combination effects the spine's natural arch, leading to hyperlordosis (swayback). Chronic sitters don't use their hip flexor muscles much, so the hips get tight and your range of motion is limited. This affects your movement as well. Tips to get moving - Try to answer phone calls standing up or walking around. - If your office doesn't provide a standing desk, find a high table or counter. - Rather than gathering around the water cooler for a chat with your colleagues, walk around the premises with them. - Take the stairs as often as you can. Ditching the lift will increase the blood flow to your brain too, energising you instantly. - Take five-minute breaks to get up from your chair and clear your head every couple of hours. It will help you focus better. - Walk around your building during lunch time. If you don't have the space, use the footpath outside or find a park nearby. - Find a corner where you can do stretching exercises. All of us reach that point in life when we feel thoroughly exhausted or mentally numb. Experts say that an increasing number of individuals today are getting burned out. And if one does not take a break in time, it starts affecting one's work performance and even relationships with family and friends. Find yourself constantly feeling tired, irritable and low? You could be suffering from a burn out. Here's what you can do... Are you constantly trying to please people? Experts say that over a period of time this will lead to tremendous mental pressure, leading to a burn out. Learn when to say a no and when to say a yes. While it may seem selfish, think about yourself first, if you have too much on your plate. Take a break. This literally means to stop doing the things that stress you out. Take a few days off work and do things that make you happy and help you relax. It could be something as simple as listening to your favourite song on loop, going for a walk, cooking new dishes or reading. You could also try going on a mini vacation or go for spa treatments. Anything that unwinds you will help you feel better. Don't expect miracles immediately — your mind and body also need time to recuperate. Yoga and meditation are simple yet effective ways to deal with a burn out. Breathing exercises will calm your mind down and help you think more clearly. Keep a diary and list your goals. Jot down things that mean a lot to you. This will also help you review your life and help you figure out with things that are most important. In this age of hurried pace, high cholesterol, take away food and extra midriff lard, do you ever want to go back to childhood where weight was nary a worry, cholesterol just a difficult word and food not insecticide-laden or hormone-induced? We all do. Don't we all look for childhood? Call it absent-minded coincidence, but one day, I bumped into childhood. No, not by turning the clock. Walking through the aisle of a superstore, I found childhood on the grocery shelf. That stout, brown grain of rice that the khansama (cook) would make for lunch every day. Not pressure cooked. That gooey brown rice that ma would serve with a piping dollop of ghee. I grew up but that aroma lived in my soul. It is to that aroma of fat, brown rice that I yearned to return to. Not the long-grained Basmati, but the non-Basmati brown rice - unmilled rice which is an excellent source of manganese, selenium, phosphorus, copper, magnesium, and niacin (vitamin B3). Do you know what happens when that hearty brown rice is milled and polished into white? It destroys 67 per cent of vitamin B3, 80 per cent of vi tamin B1, 90 per cent of vitamin B6, half of the manganese, half of the phosphorus, 60 per cent of the iron, and all the dietary fibre and essential fatty acids. So, white rice is essentially refined starch without original nutrients. Even in brown rice, the non-Bas mati brown rice is better than the long grained ones. The basic difference lies in their Glycemic Index (GI); the latter has GI of only 8.6. How does that help? Ask Swapna Chaturvedi, dietician at New Delhi's All India Institute of Medical Sciences and she'll rattle off all the benefits of non-Basmati brown rice. "Its low GI is an extremely healthy option for diabetics, weight watchers, colon cancer patients and heart patients. Its high fibre content keeps blood glucose levels stable and prevents hunger cravings. Its micronutrients hunger cravings. Its micronutrie make it anti-carcinogenic and anti-inflammatory." Pressure cook the rice. Do not throw the rice whey. Retain the starch. Throwing the whey means discarding all the water-soluble nutrients. Dietician Dr Charu Dua of Pushpanjali Crosslay Hospital, New Delhi, shatters the myth of avoiding rice carbs at night. "Non-Basmati brown rice is great dinner. It fends off hunger cravings; its low GI helps lower blood cholesterol and manage blood sugar levels." The National Cancer Institute recommends 25gm of fibre per day and a cup of brown rice provides almost 3.5gm dietary fibre. As a kid, I knew nothing about GI and micronutrients in non Basmati brown rice. I didn't 6 know it was good for weight watchers. All I loved was the aroma and its feel-good wholesomeness. I have re turned to childhood. To that stout-grained brown rice. Source: http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/life-style/health-fitness/diet/Why-non-Basmati-brown-rice/articleshow/45165715.cms
