Here's how to enjoy your daily dose of dahi in the healthiest way possible Beyond being healthy, eating yoghurt can be a great snack for weight loss because of its protein con tent. It helps keep you full so you're not starved an hour after you eat. However, there are a few common yoghurt mistakes that can turn this weight-loss weapon into a secret calorie bomb. Here are the habits to avoid, so you can reap its full health benefits: FOCUSING ON CALORIES Calorie counting can be helpful when you are trying to control your food intake, but it may be misleading when it comes to having packaged dahi, which claims to be low in calories. Rather than looking at how many calories a tetra-pack contains, make sure you check the protein level, too. A yoghurt packet may claim it has 100 calories but only six grams of protein. In that case, you would probably be better off choosing one that has more calories but 12 to 15 grams of protein so it's easier to stay full until your next meal. NOT MEASURING PORTIONS Eating off a big container may lead you to over-serve yourself. Don't just figure portion sizes with your eyes -actually measure them (like you would do, if you were eating ice cream) to make sure you are not going overboard. Most single-serve containers measure six large tablespoons, so stick to a small bowl. ADDING TOO MANY EXTRAS Buying plain yoghurt and adding your own extras is a great idea in theory, but this could also mean that you are sabotaging your healthy-eating efforts. People add honey to sweeten, cereal for some crunch, and nuts and fruit for flavour. All of these things can be great additions, but come with a disclaimer. Fruit and dairy can cause acidity. With nuts (since they are rich in proteins), it is very easy to turn that bowl of dahi from a snack into a meal without realising. First, decide if you're having yoghurt as an in-between snack or as a full-on breakfast. If it's just a snack, stick to a cup of yoghurt, with a light sprinkle of nuts. If you're using it as a breakfast, add a serving of cereal, and few nuts. GOING FOR FAT-FREE Fat-free yoghurt is a big sham. All yoghurt will have naturally occurring sugars as a by product of coming from milk, but some have larger amounts of added sugar to boost taste. If the total sugar content of one serving is above 18 grams or if sugar is the first ingredient on the label, try a different kind. Nobody needs to do fat-free unless they actually prefer the taste of it. And while doing that, check the ingredients list to make sure you are getting enough protein and not too much sugar. SEEKING OUT PROBIOTICS Given that plenty of studies suggest probiotics are beneficial, profit-hungry food companies are bound to brand them as the latest `IT' product Don't be fooled into thinking that just because a label mentions probiotics, it is healthy. It is possible to eat too much yoghurt. While it's fine to hop on to the probiotics train, there's no need to start loading your diet with yogurt to get your fill. TURNING THEM INTO FROZEN DESSERTS So your dahi has the potential to dress-up disguise for an unhealthy snack (especially those you find at various yoghurt parlours). They can be very misleading. They might have full-fat yoghurt, and they are usually packed with granola. Even more, the layers of granola break up the yoghurt and make it easy to think you're eating less than you actually are. If you're in a rush and craving a dairy fix, go for regular packaged yoghurt or eat what is prepared at home. Are you not hitting the gym thinking that weight loss at your age may not be of any help? Think again as researchers have now found that weight loss at any age in adulthood is beneficial as it could yield long-term heart and vascular benefits. "Our findings suggest that losing weight at any age can result in long-term cardiovascular health benefits, and support public health strategies and lifestyle modifications that help individuals who are overweight or obese to lose weight at all ages," said professor John Deanfield from University College London (UCL). The study examined the impact of lifelong patterns of weight change on cardiovascular risk factors in a group of British men and women followed since birth in March 1946. They showed that the longer the exposure to excess body fat (adiposity) in adulthood, the greater the cardiovascular-related problems in later life, including increased thickness of the carotid artery walls, raised systolic blood pressure, and increased risk of diabetes. Adults who drop a BMI (body mass index) category - from obese to overweight, or from overweight to normal - at any time during adult life, even if they regain weight, can reduce these cardiovascular manifestations. "Our study is unique because it followed individuals for such a long time, more than 60 years, and allowed us to assess the effect of modest, real-life changes in adiposity," Deanfield added. The findings appeared in the journal The Lancet Diabetes & Endocrinology. Too much salt in one's diet increases the risk of contracting kidney problems, says a new research. The researchers found high sodium intake (an average of 4.7g a day) is linked with an increased risk of needing dialysis, but no benefit was seen for low sodium intake (average 2g a day). "Our findings extend the known benefits of healthy eating and show that the consumption of a healthy diet may protect from future major renal events," said Andrew Smyth from the National University of Ireland, Galway. "As dietary modification is a low-cost, simple intervention, it offers the potential to significantly reduce the burden from chronic kidney disease, while also protecting from cardiovascular disease," Smyth added in the study involving 544,635 participants. These findings were confirmed by a separate study that found that reducing salt intake reduces albuminuria, or excess protein in the urine, which is a hallmark of kidney dysfunction. In the study involving 120 rural villages in China, researchers analysed the results of an 18-month sodium reduction programme. The findings of the study led by Meg Jardine from The George Institute for International Health, in Australia and her colleagues revealed that individuals who underwent sodium reduction had a 33 percent decreased likelihood of having albuminuria compared with individuals in the control villages. Both the studies were presented at ASN (American Society of Nephrology) Kidney Week Nov 11-16, 2014 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. It may defy common sense but an Indian-origin cardiologist has found that patients who experience a certain type of heart attack during hospitalisation face greater risk of death than outpatients. The heart condition the researchers focused is called ST-elevation myocardial infarction. Prashant Kaul from University of North Carolina found that patients developing inpatient-onset STEMI had more than three-fold greater in-hospital mortality than those with outpatient-onset STEMI (33.6 percent vs 9.2 percent). STEMI is a certain pattern on an electrocardiogram following a heart attack. "The question of how to improve outcomes and define optimum treatment in hospitalised patients who experience a STEMI is an area that merits more attention and concern," Kaul noted. "Although there have been improvements in treatment times and clinical outcomes in outpatients who have onset of STEMI, few initiatives have focused on optimising care of hospitalised patients with onset of STEMI after admission," he explained. This study included an analysis of STEMIs occurring between 2008 and 2011 as identified in the California State Inpatient Database. A total of 62,021 STEMIs were identified in 303 hospitals. Patients with inpatient-onset STEMI were less likely to be discharged home (33.7 percent vs 69.4 percent), the findings showed. The study appeared in JAMA: The Journal of the American Medical Association. Diabetes is often called the 'silent killer' because of its easy-to-miss signs (hence 'silent'), but ability to wreck havoc through multiple organ damage (hence a potential 'killer'). In diabetes high blood glucose acts like a poison; it is often accompanied by high blood pressure and abnormal blood lipids, forming an evil team to harm the individual. The cells in your body rely on glucose for energy; hence glucose is essential for you to function properly. You may take some amount of glucose directly eg., in fruits; but the majority is derived from breakdown in the intestine of carbohydrates like starch present in rice, bread, potato etc. Glucose is transported to all the cells in the body through the bloodstream, which is like an elaborate road and rail network in your body. Source: http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/life-style/health-fitness/health/Your-sugar-warns-you-Know-the-signs-of-Diabetes/articleshow/45070456.cms However, in order to use the glucose, your body needs insulin. This is a hormone produced by the pancreas. Insulin is like a key that opens the 'locks' on cells to allow entry of glucose. People with type 1 diabetes no longer make insulin to help their bodies use glucose (as if their pancreas has declared a lockout), so they have to rely on regular insulin injections. People with type 2 diabetes may have enough insulin, at least initially, but they cannot use it well (as if the 'locks' on cells are defective, so the key cannot open them); they're insulin resistant. Many of the signs and symptoms of Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes are similar. Warning Signs of Diabetes Sometimes diabetes can develop without any warnings signs. In fact, about a third of all people who have diabetes don't know they have it; most of them have Type 2 diabetes. That's why it's important to talk to your doctor about your risk for diabetes and determine if you should be tested, even if you have none of the warning signs. Common warnings signs of diabetes include: Increased thirst or dry mouth Frequent urination in large volumes Increased hunger Unexplained weight loss (even though you may be eating more) Fatigue (weak, tired feeling) Frequent infections (including fungal infections of the private parts) or cuts that take a long time to heal Blurred vision Because diabetes can lead to serious health complications, it's important to be aware of the signs of diabetes. If you have any of the above mentioned warnings signs of diabetes, give your doctor a call and schedule a diabetes test. With the right diabetes diet, regular exercise, and medications, if needed, you can manage diabetes and live an active, productive life. Women are more likely to suffer from depression and anxiety-related disorders because the sex hormone oestrogen drives more blood to the heads of young women compared to men. It is during puberty that the gender difference may originate, a significant study indicated. "These results may have important implications for neuropsychiatric disorders with adolescent onset and strong gender disparities such as mood disorders, anxiety disorders and schizophrenia," said Theodore Satterthwaite, a professor at University of Pennsylvania. In general, females have a higher prevalence of anxiety and depression and in males higher prevalence of schizophrenia, Satterthwaite explained. For the study, researchers used magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scans to analyse the development of brain blood flow in 922 young people between ages eight and 22 to find out when such sex changes emerge. The study found the areas of a girl's brain that saw the highest increase in blood flow was that which deals with emotions and controls social situations. Source: http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/life-style/health-fitness/health/Why-women-suffer-from-depression-more-than-men/articleshow/35631085.cms "The parts of the brain that saw the highest difference of blood flow were in parts of the brain associated with higher cognitive functions," Satterthwaite added. The study appeared in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.
