  4. When Samsung launched the Galaxy S24, it promised to bring some of the phone's flagship AI features to older Galaxy handsets. According to a recent announcement, we now know exactly when that will be. Almost all major mobile devices that Samsung launched in 2023 will get a sprinkling of the company’s new Galaxy AI technology “from the end of March,” the Korean company has now confirmed. The list of devices includes the Galaxy S23 series, S23 FE, both of the latest Fold and Flip handsets and the Tab S9 series. This story was updated on February 26th. Update below. “This is only the beginning of Galaxy AI, as we plan to bring the experience to over 100 million Galaxy users within 2024.” TM Roh, Samsung’s President and head of mobile explained in a blog post. This is an interesting move for Samsung because it is ostensibly handing over flagship Galaxy S24 features, to existing users, for free. These AI tools—Live Translate, Circle to Search, Note Assist and generative image editing—feature prominently in Samsung’s Galaxy S24 marketing, which is squarely focused on framing it as a unique AI-powered phone. Except it won’t be anymore, because Samsung wants to make this technology available to hundreds of millions of existing Galaxy users. It works by simulating the home screen of a Samsung Galaxy phone, which includes a demo of the new Galaxy AI features. It’s not a launcher app that adds a new skin, rather it's a very clever interactive guide with a suite of detailed features. For example, one of the AI features, Live Translate, doesn’t actually work. You can initiate your own translated phone call. Instead, users are given an in-depth demonstration of a call between an English speaking woman and a Spanish taxi driver organising a pickup. Other skills, like Circle To Search and Note Assist are just videos explaining the feature. The overall experience is oddly detailed, though. The Gallery app has a full compliment of someone else’s pictures, there are text messages between your alternate Galaxy owning self and others, and a detailed Samsung Health profile too. Source
  5. After its flagships, Samsung's Galaxy A5x series is one of its most highly anticipated launches of the year. This lineup has proven to be a solid contender in the mid-range segment, some would even argue that it's the one to beat for the many Android OEMs competing for space in this segment of the market. There have been quite a few Galaxy A55 5G leaks over the past few weeks. We've even seen live images of the device. Now, one of the most comprehensive Galaxy A55 leaks has been posting online, basically revealing everything that you might had some curiosity about. More details about the Galaxy A55 5G have surfaced This leak reiterates much of what has already been known. Samsung has equipped the Galaxy A55 5G with a 6.5-inch 1080p resolution display and an aluminum frame and IP67 water resistance rating. The panel should reach a maximum brightness of 1000 nits with a 120Hz refresh rate. You'll find Samsung's new Exynos 1480 chipset under the hood paired with 6GB of RAM and 128GB of storage on the base model while there's also an 8GB RAM and 256GB configuration for those willing to pay a bit more. Since it will have a microSD card slot, there's always going to be room for external expansion. The Galaxy A55 5G's camera setup consists of a 50-megapixel f/1.8 primary sensor with optical image stabilization. You'll also get a 12-megapixel f/2.2 wide-angle camera and a 5-megapixel macro camera. The 32-megapixel selfie camera on the front should be more than enough for most users. Despite weighing just 213 grams and measuring 8.2mm thin, the Galaxy A55 is equipped with a beefy 5,000mAh battery that supports 25W fast charging. Samsung will ship the Galaxy A55 5G with Android 14 out of the box with One UI 6.1. This means that the device will have some of the Galaxy AI features that Samsung introduced with the Galaxy S24 series last month. Pricing is expected to start at 449 euro for the base model in Europe. The Galaxy A55 5G will launch alongside the Galaxy A35 5G on March 11, 2024 in navy, ice blue, white, and purple colors. Source
  6. At Galaxy Unpacked last month, Samsung teased a brand-new wearable in a new product category with not much more than a splashy video and a name: Galaxy Ring. Now, we have a little more to go on, including the fact that it’s expected to arrive this year. Samsung’s VP of digital health, Dr. Hon Pak, didn’t specifically say what sensors are in the ring but mentioned sleep insights based on heart rate, movement, and respiratory indicators. Pak says that Samsung’s partnership with Natural Cycles (which already brings period and fertility tracking to its Galaxy Watch series) will extend to the ring, too — putting it in direct competition with the Oura Ring. On the Galaxy Ring, battery size increases slightly in the larger band sizes, though Pak couldn’t share any exact battery life estimates. The Galaxy Ring will help inform a new metric Samsung is introducing to the Health app in the near future called My Vitality Score. It’s based on a model from the University of Georgia that incorporates four factors: sleep, activity, resting heart rate, and heart rate variability. The Vitality Score will be a feature of Samsung’s Galaxy Watches, too, coming first to the Watch 6 later this year — but will require a Galaxy S24-series phone to work. Ring owners will also be able to specify certain health goals and receive related updates and tips in the form of something called Booster Cards, which are also coming to the Galaxy Health app later this year. 9. Apple is speeding up development of a smart ring that can be worn on the finger to track users' health biometrics, claims a new report coming out of Korea. Apple has toyed with the idea of a ring wearable for several years, as indicated by several patents, but with Samsung preparing to bring its own product to market, the time could be ripe for Apple to follow it with something that embodies CEO Tim Cook's mantra, "be best, not first." According to the Electronic Times, Apple has been paying close attention to the market for signs that a smart ring would be a popular, less intrusive alternative to a watch, that can be worn for longer and is easier to sleep with. Apple is said to be seriously weighing up the idea as a viable expansion of its wearables lineup, and has been increasingly applying for patents related to an NFC-enabled finger-worn device as it coordinates the timing of the release. "It seems likely that commercialization is imminent," said an industry insider quoted in the machine-translated report. The rumor comes as Samsung prepares to unveil a Galaxy Ring at its second Galaxy Unpacked 2024 event, which is likely to take place in the second half of July. The Korean firm teased the product's existence at the end of its first Unpacked event in January, and it is now expected to enter mass production in the second half of the year. Besides its rumored ability to measure blood flow, the Galaxy Ring is also expected to feature ECG monitoring, sleep tracking, and functionalities for controlling other devices and making wireless payments remotely. The device is expected to come in several sizes. In March 2022, Oura announced that it had sold more than one million rings, but its latest incarnation has come in for criticism after the company introduced a $5.99 monthly subscription fee that put certain aspects of user data behind a paywall. 10. Apple's Vision Pro spatial computer is not the sort of product that you might buy on a whim. Priced at $3,499 and up, this is an extravagant purchase that many people just cannot afford without having to make some adjustments to their budget. We know how much it costs a consumer to buy a Vision Pro, but how much does it cost Apple to purchase the parts needed to make one? Research firm Omdia (via CNBC) was able to estimate that each headset has a "bill of materials" that adds up to $1,542. Following the display, the chips used for the Vision Pro are the next expensive component. This includes the M2 SoC which is the silicon used by Apple in the iPad Pro (2022), and the R1 custom processor. The latter handles the input from 12 cameras, five sensors, and six microphones to make it appear as though things are happening right in front of the user's eyes, in real-time. The R1 chip streams new images to the displays within 12 milliseconds. "There’s 5,000 patents in the product, and it’s built on many innovations that Apple has spent multiple years on from silicon to displays and significant AI and machine learning," Cook added. "All the hand tracking, the room mapping, all of this stuff is driven by AI, and so we’re incredibly excited about it." The first Apple quarterly earnings report to include Vision Pro sales should be released the first week in May which will cover the fiscal second quarter of 2024. That report will include results for January through March. The spatial computer was released by Apple on February 2nd. Source
12. The iPhone 16 Pro is set to succeed 2023's iPhone 15 Pro, introducing over 25 new features and improvements to Apple's high-end smartphones. With many users adopting two-year upgrade cycles, plenty of iPhone 14 Pro owners will be looking to upgrade to the ‌iPhone 16 Pro‌ later this year, so this guide breaks down every major difference you should be aware of between the two generations based on rumors. In 2022, Apple unveiled the ‌iPhone 14‌ Pro as the successor to the popular iPhone 13 Pro, introducing an always-on display, the Dynamic Island, a 48-megapixel camera, the A16 Bionic chip, longer battery life, and more. Two years later, the ‌iPhone 16 Pro‌ is expected to offer over 50 upgrades. All of the changes the ‌iPhone 16 Pro‌ models are expected to feature compared to their 2022 predecessor are listed below, using information from reliable sources that we have previously covered. The design of the ‌iPhone 16 Pro‌ is expected to be a relatively significant evolution over the ‌iPhone 14‌ Pro, iterating on the titanium frame and slightly rounded edges introduced on the ‌iPhone 15 Pro‌ models last year. To accommodate larger displays, both ‌iPhone 16 Pro‌ models are rumored to grow in height and width. In addition to last year's increase in depth, the devices are due to be considerably larger, but with a notable reduction in weight thanks to the adoption of a titanium frame. Both ‌iPhone 16 Pro‌ models are expected to feature larger displays than their predecessors, pushing the ‌iPhone 16 Pro‌ Max to be the biggest iPhone ever offered. There are also reportedly improvements to the underlying OLED technology in store, in addition to last year's slimmer bezels, making for a noticeable overall display upgrade. Source
  13. In a land far, far away, Apple made a huge statement this week that has serious implications for the battle that is about to intensify between its iPhone and Android alternatives, which at the premium end of the market, largely means Samsung. “Some companies regularly scan personal information in the cloud,” Apple said, “to monetize the information of their users. Apple does not. We have chosen a very different path—one that prioritizes the security and privacy of our users.” The statement was made in Australia, yet another market looking at pushing a surveillance burden onto tech providers to flag bad behaviors across their user base. “Tools of mass surveillance,” Apple warned, “have widespread negative implications for freedom of opinion and expression and, by extension, democracy as a whole. For example, awareness that the government may compel a provider to watch what people are doing raises the serious risk of chilling legitimate associational, expressive, political freedoms, and economic activity.” This is notable because it is the exact argument made by myself and others when Apple proposed device-side scanning for CSAM back in 2021: “Apple will be pressed into expanding its CSAM screening to look for other content at the insistence of governments where Apple sells its devices. In the past Apple has rebuffed such requests because they’re technically impossible. Well, that has suddenly changed.” Source
Sursa
  15. It seems unthinkable, but there's a very real possibility that the Canon EOS R1 might miss its Olympic Games debut. There's a tradition when it comes to flagship sports cameras: they release every four years, in time for the Olympics, so they can be used (indeed, showcased) by elite photographers to shoot elite athletes. However, it looks like there's a very real chance that the Canon EOS R1 – Canon's eagerly anticipated professional camera – might not make it in time for the Paris 2024 Olympic Games in July. After making zero appearances in 2023, even in secret briefings under NDA, pundits like me thought that Canon would unleash the R1 at CP+ 2024 in Japan this month. Surely it had to – we are, after all, just five months away from the Olympics, which isn't a lot of time to announce and ship a camera of this magnitude. According to the report by Canon Rumors, the R1 will have its development announcement around April (accompanying the launch of the R5 Mark II). For those unaware, a development announcement is effectively a preliminary announcement; it lacks specs, price or release date, merely confirming that a product is on the way. Source
  16. Having been a Canon shooter since day one, I am quite familiar with parts of the Canon range. These parts being the single-digit-D cameras. Namely, the 1D and the 5D range of cameras. Over my full-frame run as a photographer, I shot with: Canon 1D Mark II, Canon 5D Mark II, Canon 5Ds, Canon 5D Mark IV. Out of these cameras, I think the best bang for your buck will surely be the Canon 5D Mark II. It offers great full-frame performance, with very little sacrifice of quality and raw performance. This might be odd to hear for some people who are aware of the latest Canon gear out there. Namely, the mirrorless offerings from Canon. Why pick a 5D Mark II, a camera that is over a decade old? To be frank, if you need the fastest, best camera available, you are probably not reading this article and already know what you need. For the rest of us, who are reading this article, the advice is as follows: get a 5D Mark II and save the cash. It would be a stretch to say that the 5D Mark II has plenty of performance to rival current cameras. It doesn’t. The sensor is quite dated, and it shows. The lack of resolution is the least of my concerns, I like to think. In reality, it isn’t. As I like to crop my images and experiment with various compositions, sometimes with extensive Photoshop. The reason I went for a high-resolution studio camera is just that: I like to have the flexibility. But hand on heart, I could also spend a little extra time in composition and get the same result with a 5D Mark II. When I shot work with a 5D Mark II, I never had a complaint that my images were bad. The same with any other camera I owned. I always heard, the images are great. This is all. The images will remain to be great no matter the camera you use. In case you need more resolution, you can always rent a better camera. Source

The new X100VI retains the popular “Hybrid Viewfinder” and excellent design while adopting the back-illuminated “X-Trans CMOS 5 HR” sensor with approximately 40.2 megapixels and the high-speed “X-Processor 5” image processing engine. In addition, it is the first in the X100 series to incorporate a newly developed in-body image stabilization function with a maximum of 6.0 stops while achieving a compact and lightweight body weighing approximately 521g. It can be used for photography in a wide range of situations. The X100VI merges meticulous design and usability with superior features to produce exceptional image quality, thereby enhancing the pleasure of owning a camera and the marvel of photography for a broad spectrum of users, from professional photographers to photography enthusiasts. 18. Samsung's first update for the Galaxy S24 series is a major one, promising a way to bring back the saturated screen look, as well as a slew of camera improvements. The firmware launched in Korea last week and is now, finally, reaching other users. Currently, Galaxy S24 series owners in Europe are getting the update, but the rollout should go global very soon. The firmware is version S92xBXXU1AXB5 and weighs around 750 MB. Samsung lists a generic list of improvements - device stability, new and or enhanced features, further improvements, etc, but there's a lot going on. Inside the display mode's advanced settings now sits a slider to adjust just how much vividness you want applied to your screen. Samsung has said that it thinks the natural tuning is superior, so this update doesn't change it, you need to do it manually. Brighter Backlight Shots: Say goodbye to washed-out photos! High-pixel mode now shines with better balance in bright scenes. Sharper Text Zooms (Galaxy S24 Ultra only): Get closer than ever with crystal-clear text, even at high magnifications. Ultra-Smooth Video (Galaxy S24 Ultra only): Capture your moments with stunning clarity and detail in rear video recording. Indoor Portrait Enhancements (Galaxy S24 Ultra only): Brighter shadows, sharper faces - perfect indoor portraits every time. Food Mode Fiesta: Colors pop and flavors come alive with richer, more vibrant food photos. Night Mode Magic: Experience improved saturation and white balance for more natural-looking nighttime shots. DNG Gallery Zoom: Explore your photos in even greater detail with improved image quality when zooming in the Expert RAW app. Action Heroes (Galaxy S24 Ultra only): Capture fast-moving subjects in backlit conditions with sharper focus and clearer details. Subjects Shine (Galaxy S24 Ultra only): People, flowers, and more come to life with optimized exposure and color expression in photo mode. Sursa
Sursa
  21. The reported details of the new dimensions of the Galaxy Z Fold 6 will be welcomed by many. Folding phones have traditionally been the same depth as regular smartphones, but only when unfolded. Close up the device and you have a chunky phone that feels like 2003 called and asked for its brick back. Since the Galaxy Z Fold 5 launch, foldables from Oppo, OnePlus and Honor have all debuted with different form factors, including user interface-friendly screen ratios and thinner designs. Placed next to the competition, the Z Fold 5 is rather chunky. Thankfully, Samsung looks to be addressing the physical size of the flagship foldable, with the 16mm depth of the Z Fold 5 set to be cut by 25 per cent to 11mm. That would make it the thinnest of any Samsung foldable and thinner than devices from Oppo and Open. That doesn’t match the 8.6mm depth of the Galaxy S24 Ultra (and, of course, all these measurements handily ignore any camera island jutting out the rear of the phone), but the impact of this change when holding a foldable will be noticeable. The direct comparison between the first and second generation of Honor Magic foldable, with the second device just 10.1mm, helped the newer device feel ready to meet a regular smartphone audience. 22. 23. We might actually get an opportunity to check out the Galaxy Ring before that, at least in some capacity. Word on the street is that Samsung will showcase the ring at its MWC 2024 booth. That being said, it might be a bit too early to hope for a proper hands-on experience with the Galaxy Ring since it is allegedly still in the prototyping phase, with mass production set to begin between April and June. Seeing how that is the case, we still don’t know all of the details surrounding the Galaxy Ring and its capabilities. The Galaxy Ring will have ECG support and will measure blood pressure, and will also support NFC payments. There will apparently be eight different sizes on offer. Reportedly, the ring will be very light and also feature different material finishes. We’ll keep a close eye on the Galaxy Ring and update you with any developments since this could be an exciting new chapter for the currently small smart ring niche. Sursa
