But you quickly discover there is far more at stake than groundbreaking research. There is a prophecy. One that foretells chaos and evil being unleashed upon the world on the night when a comet hides behind the moon and turns the sky purple. Tonight is that night. Can you race against the clock to not only save yourself but the fate of two worlds? Source: http://www.freshwap.me/6033308-graven-the-purple-moon-prophecy-final.html
  2. Trying your best to burn all that extra fat but but not quite achieving your target? Here are some tips that will give your metabolism a boost and increase lean muscle mass... 1. Protein's the way to go: Are you getting enough protein? If you want to increase lean muscle in the body, you need to ensure that you eat enough protein. Tuna is an excellent source of protein as is yogurt, chicken breast, cheese, nuts and lentils. 2. Take strength training seriously: Many people often think that strength training isn't important enough when it comes to burning fat but they're mistaken. While your daily run is important, strength training is a type of physical exercise that uses resistance to build endurance and strength, and also burn fat. Experts recommend strength training at least twice a week. 3. Avoid emotional eating: If you're seriously considering going on a diet, strengthen your resolve and stick to it. Thinking that you'll allow yourself just that one nibble of dessert will not help you achieve your goal. Eat when you're hungry and not because an opportunity presents itself. And recognise those moments when you give in to emotional eating. 4. Keep challenging your body: Once you've made up your mind about your fitness goal, it is imperative that you chalk out a plan. This will help you stick to your timetable. And don't stick to the same routine every time. Incorporate different technique in your regime so that you don't get bored after a while. This way you will also keep challenging your body. 5. Maintain a food journal: Keep a journal of everything that you eat. And this literally means every single bite. Very often, people don't realise the things they eat during the day — a bite from a co-workers lunch, a small piece of cake, a snack in-between meals, i cola while travelling — and then wonder why they're finding it so tough to burn fat. 6. Never stay hungry for long: While keeping a close eye on the calories you're consuming is fine, don't go overboard and starve yourself either. The more you deprive your body for food, the more fat it will store, making your entire exercise of burning fat, very futile. Going hungry also means slowing down your metabolism — the last thing you want. 3. Regular, moderate consumption of filtered, decaffeinated coffee may decrease an individual's risk of developing Type 2 diabetes, promising research indicates. Filtered coffee exhibited a greater protective effect than boiled coffee and decaffeinated coffee showed a greater protective effect than caffeinated coffee. "Drinking decaffeinated filtered coffee at lunch time is the best time of day to lower the chances of diabetes," researchers noted. "The evidence shows that drinking three to four cups of coffee per day is associated with an approximate 25 percent lower risk of developing Type 2 diabetes compared to consuming none to less than two cups per day," stated researchers from Switzerland-based Institute for Scientific Information on Coffee (ISIC). They also suggested a favourable association: With each additional cup of coffee reducing the relative risk of developing Type 2 diabetes by 7-8 percent. The ISIC detailed the findings in its annual diabetes report outlining the latest research on coffee and Type 2 diabetes. More than 380 million people worldwide have diabetes, with an economic burden of $548 billion, making it one of the most significant global health problems. 6. With close to six billion minds active from moment to moment, there are endless streams of thoughts on every aspect of creation. Some thoughts perceive reality the way it is and some are imagination. While there are myths about many topics, the most popular one is meditation. The word, 'meditation' conjures up all kinds of images and notions. If you are wondering whether meditation is meant for you, read on to find out. Here is a list of the most common myths, hoping that any confusion that you might have is cleared. Myth #1 Meditation is concentration Meditation is actually de-concentration. Concentration is a benefit of meditation. Concentration requires effort and meditation is absolute relaxation of the mind. Meditation is letting go, and when that happens, you are in a state of deep rest. When the mind is relaxed, we can concentrate better. Myth #2 Meditation, a religious practice Yoga and meditation are ancient practices that transcend all religions. In fact, meditation has the ability to bring religions, nations and faiths together. Just like the sun shines for everyone, and the wind blows for everyone, meditation benefits everyone. "We encourage people from all backgrounds, religions and cultural traditions to come together and meditate in a spirit of celebration," says Sri Sri Ravi Shankar. Myth #4 Meditation is for old people Meditation is universal and adds value to the lives of people of all age groups. One can start mediating at the age of eight or nine. Just like a shower keeps the body clean, meditation is a great tonic for the mind. Myth #5 Meditation is like hypnotising yourself Meditation is an antidote for hypnosis. In hypnotism, the person is not aware of what he or she is going through. Meditation is complete awareness of each and every moment. Hypnotism takes the person through the same impressions that are in his mind. Meditation frees us from these impressions so that our consciousness is fresh and clear. Hypnotism increase metabolic activity, meditation reduces it. "Those who practice pranayama and meditation regularly cannot be hypnotized easily," says Sri Sri Ravi Shankar. Myth #6 Meditation is thought control Thoughts do not come to us by invitation. We become aware of them only after they have arrived! Thoughts are like clouds in the sky. They come and go on their own. Trying to control thoughts involves effort and the key to a relaxed mind is effortlessness. In meditation, we do not crave for good thoughts nor are we averse to bad thoughts. We simply witness and eventually transcend thoughts and move into that deep inner silent space. Myth #7 Meditation is a way of running away from problems On the contrary, meditation empowers you to face problems with a smile. These skills, help us handle situations in a pleasant and constructive manner. We also develop the ability to accept situations as they are and take conscious action instead of brooding over the past or worrying about the future. Meditation nurtures inner strength and self-esteem. It acts like an umbrella during rainy days. Challenges will arise, but we can still move ahead with confidence. Myth #8 You have to meditate for hours to go deep You do not have to sit for hours to have a deeper experience in meditation. The connection with your inner core or your source can happen in just a fraction of a moment. Just a 20-minute session of Sahaj Samadhi meditation every morning and evening is sufficient to take you on this beautiful inward journey. As you practice your meditation every day, the quality of your meditation will improve gradually. Myth #9 If you meditate, you will become a sanyasi (monk or recluse) You do not have to give up a material life to meditate or progress on the spiritual path. In fact, the quality of your enjoyment improves greatly as you meditate. With a relaxed and peaceful mind, you are able to live happily and make others in your family and surroundings happy too. Myth #10 You can only meditate at certain times, facing certain directions Anytime is a good time for meditation and all directions are good for meditation. The only thing to keep in mind is that your stomach should not be full; else you may doze off instead of meditating. However, it is a good practice to meditate during sunrise and sunset (morning and evening) as it can keep you calm and energetic throughout the day. 7. Let's face it — we all get anxious from time to time. Whether it is at work or at home — situations and circumstances often bring with them anxiety that refuses to subside. But don't let it overpower your life. Here are some simple ways to deal with anxiety... Pinpoint the trigger. What sets you off? It is the idea of making a presentation in front of your team at work? Does the idea of travelling in a train during peak hours make you nervous? You need to identify what the problem is and then figure a way to deal with it. For instance, imagine all the benefits that will come your way when you make a good presentation. Or travel by another means of transport if packed trains freak you out. Put things in perspective and go ahead from there. Many experts suggest this strategy — and it actually works! Instead of spending all day (or night) worrying about something that is not in your control, keep aside 10, 15 or 20 minutes just to fret and worry. You can mope around all you like in that time. Let your anxiety take over you then. But then consciously make an effort to not let it bother you. Don't waste your present by worrying about the past or the future. Instead, focus on the 'now'. And don't allow yourself to waste time feeling anxious — chances are, it isn't even worth it. Ask yourself — will this matter a year from now? If it doesn't, it simply isn't worth getting anxious about! Talk to someone to distract your mind. When you discuss and share your problems, you also get another person's opinions — a different viewpoint. And that just might help you see things in a different light. 9. Foresight (PC/ENG/2014) English | PC | 2014 | 1.59 GB Genre: Indie, Strategy Foresight is an epic space-based RTS game that throws you, the player, into the thick of the battle as a commander. Lead huge fleets, armed with fighters and bombers across wormholes to fight it out with your enemy. Launch bombing missions, fighter patrols, plant observation posts or fire support base with reconnaissance units. Intelligence is key. Recruit capable commanders as your fleet commanders; they'll not just obey your orders, they'll also talk to you, give you suggestions, raise requests and report on their progress. Fleets are semi-autonomous and therefore have their own command, which is separate from yours though they're under your command. This allows you to expand your forces beyond what you can control. Foresight redefines the strategy component of RTS games by rewarding players for executing correct strategic decisions and not punishing players for a single mis-click or being less dexterous. Build order complexity is minimized to allow players to focus on what matters; building the right thing. Need to arm a capital ship with fighters and bombers? No problem - simply make a request with that ship. Foresight's AI will automate the entire process - between picking the nearest shipyard with the lowest load and deployment to the designated ship. So, what's your battle plan? Blitzkrieg? Flank attack? Even in space, such plans are possible because Foresight is built to deliver an reasonably accurate outcome. A large navy may not always win the day. Finally, enjoy the epic battle as fighters dogfight each other, bombers performing bombing runs and ships firing all weapons in their full glory! 10. "It's not about weight, it's about fitness, and one component of being fit is to have relatively low body fat, because fat is not very efficient, whereas muscle is" -Deborah Bull, English dancer While you know you shouldn't judge a book by its cover, you often end up doing it. Similarly, your size may not always help judge your health and fitness levels, but it is a good indicator of your mobility and physical endurance. What happens when you stuff 10 people into a six-seater car? The suspension is likely to wear out faster and the engine has to work harder, ultimately reducing its useful life. This is exactly what excess weight does to your body - it affects your quality of life. "Obesity is primarily due to factors such as genetics, unhealthy diet and lack of physical activity. If you think there is something called healthy obesity, you're wrong. The truth is, there is no way you can be heavy and healthy at the same time," says weight management expert Dr Amrapali Patil. A recent study conducted by researchers from Mount Sinai Hospital, Toronto, and published in the medical journal Annals of Internal Medicine, says, 'fat but fit' is a myth. If you are obese, but all other metabolic factors such as blood pressure, diabetes and cholesterol levels are under control, it doesn't mean obesity will not have a harmful effect on your health.Obese yet metabolically-healthy people have an increased risk of premature death compared to metabolically-healthy people who have a recommended weight. And if you're skinny and feeling all pompous, the study has also found that people who are metabolically-unhealthy regardless of their weight, are also at an increased risk of premature death. So, if you have body mass index (BMI) in the recommended range (between 19 and 25) but are smoking 2 cigarettes a day, you should stop telling yourself that your heart is not at risk. Key to staying fit "Very few people understand the concept of fitness. It's neither about having a super model body nor being flab by and curvy. It is about reaching and maintaining a healthy weight that i important for overall health. When you have a a ideal body weight, you are less likely to develop health problems, you feel good about yourself, and have more energy to p enjoy life," says fitness expert Shalini Bhargava. To look trim and attractive and achieve a healthy body weight, a lot of people pop magic pills and consume fantasy fat-burning foods, diet supplements, energy powders and protein drinks but the truth is that t the solution lies in all things g simple and realistic. "Yes, you s do not need a weight-loss expert l to tell you what to do; you have n the power to control your own life and your health." She says there are three deciding factors - fat percentage, waist to hip ratio and a genetic predisposition towards cardiovascular diseases. "You cannot change your genes but you can definitely work towards the other two by following a well-balanced exercise plan and consuming a nutritious diet. Like all things in life, anything worth achieving requires some effort and if you are ready to sweat, you have your fitness in your own hands," adds Bhargava. (Consult a doctor before trying out any diet, or exercise routine) How to maintain a healthy weight Avoid being a couch potato Include adequate physical activity in your daily routine. It can be, yoga, walking, jogging, cycling, swimming etc. Don't wait to hit the gym if you can't. Eat less food, more often Spread out your meals to feel satisfied throughout the day. Eating five or six smaller meals instead of having two heavy meals can make a big difference in your energy levels. It will also control cravings. Stay hydrated What often feels like hunger can actually be thirst. So before you each for a calorie-laden snack, drink enough water. Don't deprive yourself Don't lose weight by not consuming enough calories during the day. Never let yourself get to the point where you feel like you're starving. It will only make you overeat later. Make smart snack choices Go anti-white - avoid food items with sugar, white flour and too much salt. Instead of chips, cupcakes or chocolates, choose from the following: an apple, yogurt with flaxseeds, a handful of almonds and walnuts, vegetable sticks, etc. Dos & don'ts Choose to be trim.Choose to be toned.Choose to be lean for life. Food logging helps in a huge way. Maintain a food diary or journal. Be emotionally balanced and have a healthy perspective. A positive attitude helps enormously. Avoid fad and yo-yo diets. These are not realistic and in the long term, harm and damage the body. Don't lose motivation. If you go off track, get back on it. Don't rant and ramble that you erred. Get your nutritional facts right. For instance, a cup of chai has around 35 to 45 calories. Learn to understand this. Remember to read the labels of food items. 11. Although you experience it in the head, your body is the first to react to stress. With sudden onset of stress, the muscles get tense all at once, and then release their tension when the trigger passes.Chronic stress causes the muscles in your body to remain in a constant state of caution. When muscles stay tense for long, they can lead to other reactions in the body and even promote stress-related disorders. Both, tension headache and migraine headaches are associated with chronic muscle tension in the shoulders, neck and head. Then, the heart rate speeds up, muscles tighter, face turns red and there's a general sense of uneasiness and helplessness. But stress can also seep into your cells.Rising temperatures, toxins, infections, and resource shortages threaten how cells function and impact your health. Here are five ways you may be letting stress affect your cell. PRODDING THEM TO TANGLE Increased temperature can stress out cells. Expose them to temperatures just three degrees than they are used to, and the proteins in the cell begin to unravel and stop functioning. If they unravel too much, they tangle up with each other and form a clump that can kill the cell. To prevent this, cells rely on a set of molecules called heat shock proteins that work in many different ways. Some tuck the sticky, carbonrich regions of unfolded proteins into a small pocket; others form barrels that sequester unravelled proteins away from any potential tangling partners. Once the body cools down, heat shock proteins help refold into proper shapes. THEY EVOLVE Cells can adapt to stressful conditions in a short period. They use intricate mechanisms to maintain the stability of their genetic DNA material. For example, yeast -an organism commonly used to study human genetics -quickly gained or lost entire chromosomes when researchers stressed it with exposure to different chemicals. After prolonged exposure, colonies of yeast with chromosome changes evolved resistance to certain chemicals, including an antibiotic. Under stressful conditions, however, they relax these controls. PASS IT ON Environmental stress can reach deep into the cells' interiors and alter the genetic material held within their nuclei. And the changes can be inherited. A study showed that limited food availability during a man's lifetime was linked to his grandchildren's risk of diabetes, obesity and cardiovascular disease.Another research at an American school showed that when male mice were fed a low-protein diet, the activity of hundreds of genes in the animals' offspring changed. In particular, genes that manufacture fats were more active. While making more fats might be a protective stress response, it also could lead to obesity and related diseases.Genomic (discipline in genetics that applies recombinant DNA) research suggests a potential link between changes transmissible from parent to offspring in patterns of gene activity and changes in chemical markers, affixed to certain genes.Scientists are trying to understand the nature of these changes and how they occur. AGEING THEM PREMATURELY Doctors say, every cell in your body has its own doomsday clock, ticking down the number of times it can safely divide. This clock takes the form of a cap on the ends of each chromosome. Telomeres (a compound structure at the end of a chromosome) keep the chromosome from fraying. But they get shorter each time the cell divides. Shortened telomeres have been linked to agerelated diseases, such as arthritis, hypertension, and diabetes.Research suggests that chronic stress can dramatically shorten telomere length, causing cells to age and die prematurely. As a countermeasure, certain cells respond to temporary stressors like fear or infection by upping their production of the enzyme, telomerase, that helps telomeres maintain their length. LEADING THEM TO SUICIDE At the cellular level, death is essential for life. Apoptosis is a normal, programmed process of cellular self-destruction. It is called cellular suicide. And although it involves cell death, apoptosis serves a healthy and protective role in our bodies. It, in fact, helps shape our physical features and organs before birth and rids our bodies of unneeded or potentially harmful cells. This strategy sidesteps the destructive effects of a cell dying from the stressful conditions, which can kill nearby healthy cells by triggering inflammation. And since cell death plays a role in a number of neurological and cardiovascular diseases, medical experts believe understanding how cells make the life-or-death decision might lead to ways to reduce the damage caused by these types of conditions. 14. Do you often wake up feeling confused? According to a recent study, this may be a new sleep disorder A new study has found that sleep drunkenness disorder affects one in every seven people and causes episodes of waking up confused. Reports say that this disorder involves confusion or inappropriate behaviour such as answering the phone instead of turning off the alarm, during or following arousal from sleep, either during the first part of the night or in the morning. An episode of sleep drunkenness, say study authors, is often triggered by a forced awakening, and may even cause violent behaviour during sleep or amnesia of the episode. Study author Maurice M Ohayon, from Stanford University's School of Medicine, says, "These episodes of waking up confused have received considerably less attention than sleepwalking, even though the consequences can be just as serious." Our maximum city, sadly, has the maximum occurrence of sleep disorders, thanks to the hectic work life and the generally demanding lifestyle. The extreme travel conditions (people travel for four hours to and fro to office) plus the nine hours of work time leave very little time for sleep, and this chronic sleep depravation leads to many kinds of problems, not just at the physical level, but the emotional level as well. "Sleep, of good quantity and quality, is absolutely necessary for physical, mental and emotional well-being," says Dr Ramanathan Iyer, sleep consultant, adding, "Poor quality of sleep leads to a lot of issues." Psychiatrist Dr Harish Shetty states, "Sleep has a certain architecture, it has to follow some cycles of REM sleep, deep sleep, etc, and if that is not followed, a person could suffer from sleep drunkenness. When the quality of sleep gets is affected, and the sleep architecture is disturbed, then one becomes confused." Sleep inertia, says Dr Iyer, is different from sleep drunkenness. A characteristic of sleep inertia involves the feeling of wanting to go back to sleep as soon as you wake up to your alarm. It is about that typical groggy feeling when, with half-closed eyes, you also have impaired alertness and there is a significant decline in your motor dexterity. When one is awakened abruptly, one's mental and even physical performance is not up to the mark, however adequately the person may function, explains Dr Iyer. However, in sleep drunkenness, this may not be the case always. About The research and its findings Researchers from Stanford University's School of Medicine asked 19,136 people aged 18 and above about their sleep habits and whether they had experienced any symptoms of the disorder, and about mental illness diagnoses and any medications they took. The findings showed that 15% of the group had experienced an episode in the last year, with more than half reporting more than one episode per week. In the majority of cases — about 84% — people with sleep drunkenness also had a sleep disorder, a mental health disorder or were taking psychotropic drugs such as anti-depressants. Less than 1% of the people with sleep drunkenness had no known cause or related condition. Both long and short sleep times were associated with the sleep disorder. About 20% of those getting less than six hours of sleep per night and 15% of those getting at least nine hours experienced sleep drunkenness. People with sleep apnea were also more likely to have the disorder. DID YOU KNOW? There are nearly 88 sleep disorders of which the following are the most commonly seen in Mumbai: -Obstructive Sleep Apnea -Insomnia -Chronic Sleep Depravation Prevent it... -Yoga, vipassana and relaxation therapy -Keep office work away from home -Excessive tea/coffee -Late nights can disturb your sleep architecture -Ban late-night mobile, TV, computer —Avoid electronic screens Source: http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/life-style/health-fitness/health/Are-you-suffering-from-sleep-drunkenness/articleshow/41096839.cms
  15. It can get stressful when we have too many things to juggle, but did you know that you can actually mess up your plans and keep things from going smoothly if you are stressed out? Here are some of the mistakes we tend to make when we are stressed out... Not getting enough sleep: Sleep is the first casualty of stress. Stress can keep you up at night, and you end up missing out on the vital eight hours of sleep that you need to rejuvenate. No grey areas: When you are stressed out, you tend to think in extremes, i.e. either all good or all bad. You are less likely to see anything in between, which can seriously hamper your decision-making. Concentrating only on the negative: We tend to blow things out of proportion and magnify our issues when we are stressed out. This is when you are most likely to focus on the negative than on what can be done to work out the issue. Rash decisions: When you have a lot to juggle, it affects rational thought. When you have several things on your mind, you are unable to think clearly, so avoid making any important decisions when you are stressed. Not reasoning practically: Sometimes you need to let go of emotions and think practically to solve the problem at hand, but stress can make you think more emotionally than rationally. So, if you feel you have failed, you start to believe that and discount any facts that may or may not support the claim. 19. Including yogurt in your daily diet could lower your risk of developing Type 2 diabetes, a study says. Consumption of one 28g serving of yogurt per day is associated with an 18 percent lower risk of Type 2 diabetes, the findings showed. "We found that higher intake of yogurt is associated with a reduced risk of Type 2 diabetes, whereas other dairy foods and consumption of total dairy did not show this association," said senior researcher of the study Frank Hu from the Harvard School of Public Health in the US. The findings suggest that yogurt can be incorporated into a healthy dietary pattern, Hu added. Type 2 diabetes is a chronic condition that occurs when the body does not produce enough insulin, or the body's cells develop resistance to insulin. It has been shown that probiotic bacteria found in yoghurt improve fat profiles and antioxidant status in people with Type 2 diabetes and the researchers suggest this could have a risk-lowering effect in developing the condition. The researchers pooled the results of three prospective cohort studies that followed the medical history and lifestyle habits of health professionals. The study involved a total of 289,900 participants. Within the three cohorts, 15,156 cases of Type 2 diabetes were identified during the follow-up period. When adjusting for chronic disease risk factors such as age and BMI (body mass index) as well as dietary factors, it was found that high consumption of yogurt was associated with a lower risk of developing Type 2 diabetes. The findings were confirmed when the authors conducted a meta-analysis, incorporating their results and other published studies up to March 2013. The study appeared in the journal BMC Medicine. 25. Researchers have found that in boys, higher screen time was adversely associated to bone mineral density (BMD) at all sites even when adjusted for specific lifestyle factors. Results of a study showed that the skeleton grows continually from birth to the end of the teenage years, reaching peak bone mass - maximum strength and size- in early adulthood. Along with nutritional factors, physical activity can also greatly impact on this process. The Norwegian study explored the hypothesis that greater computer use at weekends is associated with lower BMD. The data was obtained from 463 girls and 484 boys aged 15-18 years in the Tromso region of Norway. The students participated in the Fit Futures study from 2010-2011 which assessed more than 90 per cent of all first year high school students in the region. BMD at total hip, femoral neck and total body was measured by DXA (dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry). Lifestyle variables were collected by self-administered questionnaires and interviews, including questions on time per day during weekends spent in front of the television or computer, and time spent on leisure time physical activities. The associations between BMD and screen time were analyzed in a multiple regression model that included adjustment for age, sexual maturation, BMI, leisure time physical activity, smoking, alcohol, cod liver oil and carbonated drink consumption.
