Batman: Arkham Knight Review

Could it be it? Could it be the definitive and perfect Batman game we’ve wanted for years? We don’t know what the future holds, but Arkham Knight truly steals your heart and doesn’t give it back for the Dark Knight’s longest and most fearful night.
Good and bad, right and wrong, war and peace, order and chaos and eventually, the unending conflict of righteous and evil. This makes up the perfect and appropriate approach of a superhero influence and has been the core of Batman, greatest detective and crime fighter in the world in all of comics, big screens and video games. Arkham Knight, as the third and final installment in Rocksteady’s Arkham series had the opportunity to deliver one of the best Batman games ever created or stories ever told. Rest assured, Rocksteady has been successful in this task.

Just like previous Arkham games and especially Arkham City, the scale of story is big and with incredible characterization of past titles (referring to our well-known associates as the Dark Knight, and these prodigal super-villains), it’s taken to the next level. Yes, Joker had to be stopped and Ra’s al Ghul dealt with, but Arkham Knight tells the story of a long night and a city soaked in fear while being seized by a massive legion of trained soldiers possessing a drone army. As the Scarecrow and Arkham Knight occupy the city and plan its extermination, other villains like Harley Quinn, Two Face, Penguin and Riddler are loose in the streets doing what they do best. And that’s when our beloved fearsome hero steps forward to save the night knowing there is no escape for himself in such catastrophe.

The story constantly tries to surprise you with unexpected outcomes and consequences created by the fear Batman has been bringing upon his enemies in previous games. In Arkham Asylum and Arkham City, Scarecrow was just a minor threat as villains like Penguin or Two Face are now in Arkham Knight. Character motivations play a large role in the events of the game; Scarecrow could be quite vague about his agendas as he is on one side destroying Batman’s soul and on the other, trying to have control over Gotham and beyond. And then there is this extreme hatred in Arkham Knight, an anonymous military trained commander, and his infinite desire to kill Batman. The storyline is rich, powerful and inspiring in almost every aspect leading to assert that the writers knew how to assemble and ingather the complexity of this chaos. As stated, you will be surprised rather a lot, and at specific points, the game is cleverly saying to you from your digital screen: you didn’t see that coming!
But the strongest element of the story that drives players into continuing it, is the characters that you have come to know and love from previous games and in Arkham Knight, their fate or better say everyone’s fate depends on the aftermath of Batman’s endeavor.

It is rainy and you are kicking the hell out of street thugs and militia with some new Batman moves and special combos, what could be better?! The combat is evolved and it is nice when you get the chance of beating these villains along with your partners in some spicy cinematic scenes. You grapple and glide through tall buildings and bring the fear of night to your enemies but you need all the help you can get, and by that I surely mean the utility belt and the new addition (or a whole game itself!) called Batmobile. There are a considerable number of different enemy soldiers armed with electrics and weapons or fighting with bare hands which is just like previous games, but this time it is far more enjoyable as Rocksteady have brought back the fun of Arkham City combat and tripled it with new moves and better animations. There are also militia drones and turrets placed all over the city and points of stand which makes things more challenging to ultimately push you to be more vigilant about your moves.
But what is Arkham Knight’s ace and winning card? The Batmobile. The new minor additions and mechanics with the compelling story is relatively great and has a big impact on game but what factually makes the new entry more noticeably unique and different is the Batmobile, although we can all agree it is overused and at a point, it can only deliver repetitive battles. You glide in the city and summon Batmobile whenever you want with which you can fight the Arkham Knight’s drones and turrets but not only it gives you this new taste of combat in the game, it can also be used to solve smart puzzles and overcome obstacles.

The puzzles have a big part in the game and with Riddler’s new missions, it only gets better. He has put more than two hundred trophies around the city for you to collect and there are exclusive missions where you race against his tricks or complete his challenges, now knowing it makes sense since you are doing so to rescue one of your friends. And this is only one of the many side quests you can experience and these quests will undoubtedly attract your attention since they are varied in many ways (we’ll get to that in a little bit). Destroying the militia watchtowers, chasing Firefly, rescuing firefighters, stopping Two-Face from robbing banks and eliminating Penguin’s business also have their story and absolutely unique missions.
That is in fact the strong part of gameplay, alas it has its significant flaws and problems. Level design is clever and that stays true for Batmobile gameplay as well, to some point. As you gain progress in main quest line, you can witness the intensification of Batmobile’s present and uncountable drone encounters till when it feels really overused but the game’s environment and story justify its present which makes sense as you are fighting an army of advanced technological soldiers with unmanned drones. Yes, I said unmanned! Remember the Batman’s no-killing rule?
To back our claim that level design is clever, you will encounter many different environments and in-game systems created to diverse your experience and make it special in anyway it can. Even when you face armed soldiers and enemies in general, environments are designed in a way to feel distinct every time and give you different opportunities to take down what’s in middle of you and your target.

batman: Arkham Knight has its flaws and imperfections, as any game has, and might not stick to the memory as its predecessor but it is indeed an appropriate ending to our beloved series. The story is powerful and centralized with no diversion or misleads and the gameplay never gets boring, unless we are talking about Batmobile in the second half of main quest. Nonetheless you will be surprised, amazed, and thrilled as you journey through this epic story and city worth fighting for.
