Tessa Thompson, who plays Valkyrie in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, shares some plot details about Thor: Love and Thunder. The upcoming Marvel film is set to follow on from the events of Avengers: Endgame and is directed by Taika Watiti, who returns to the MCU after directing the hugely successful Thor: Ragnarok. As a sequel to that movie, Thor: Love and Thunder will be the fourth installment in the Thor series of MCU movies.

Waititi's film will partly serve as an adaptation of The Mighty Thor run of comics in which Jane Foster, played by Natalie Portman, takes on the powers and title of the God of Thunder while undergoing treatment for cancer. Portman played a main role in the first two films in the Thor series, and while she was absent from Thor: Ragnarok, she clearly looks to be an integral part of Thor: Love and Thunder. Another actor reprising their role in the series is Thompson, whose Valkyrie is the ruler of New Asgard and one of Thor’s closest friends. The character is also bisexual, and it is hoped that her sexuality will be shown directly in Thor: Love and Thunder after the MCU’s history of only minor references to LGBTQ+ characters and storylines.

Now, in an interview with TheWrap, Thompson sheds some light on the upcoming film and shares a few details about its central story. The American actor speaks about the previous lack of representation for LGBTQ+ characters in the MCU as well as the lack of significant romance in general, noting that the franchise has devoted little time to love stories. She then goes on to explain that fans could expect Thor: Love and Thunder to be slightly different in this respect. Check out the actor’s full comments below:

We talk so much about representation and obviously, in terms of the LGBTQIA community, there’s still so much work to be done. But if you look at the comics in the canon, there are so many queer characters! It’s hard because Taika and I would’ve even liked to go further, but in the context of the movies, there’s only so much we can do. Unfortunately, there’s not a lot of time invested in love stories in Marvel movies in general. I think that will be a little different on the new Thor, which is exciting. And getting to play a character that historically is not written for somebody that looks like me, all of that felt exciting.

Thompson is right to say that the romantic subplots in MCU films have typically been supplementary to the progression of the story, rather than central to it. Romance has been more integral to some of the films, for example the relationship between Tom Holland’s Peter Parker and Zendaya’s MJ, but more often than not, the romance is a forgettable part of the script. Fans, therefore, will likely be intrigued to see an MCU release that puts its romance closer to the center of the story.

Thor: Love and Thunder will be released in 2022, after Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. Whether it will be Chris Hemsworth’s last outing as Thor is unclear, but the actor has said he is willing to continue to play the character as long as the stories are good enough. Thor has become a fan-favorite character, especially since Thor: Ragnarok, so fans will undoubtedly be hoping to see more of him, and Valkyrie, in the franchise’s future.
