The series revolves around two "Handymen" who take on jobs for both the mob and the police force that no one else can handle. The two, named Worick Arcangelo and Nicolas Brown, work in the town of Ergastulum, which is full of mafia, hoodlums, prostitutes, and dirty cops. In the town of Ergastulum, there exists a feared group of people with increased speed and strength called Twilights. The town is ruled by four gangs: Paulklee, Corsica, Monroe, and Cristiano. Worick Arcangelo and Nicolas Brown make a living here as independent jacks-of-all-trades and find themselves caught in the middle of more than a little trouble.

Gangsta’s violent and beautifully crafted first episode left me questioning so many things about its world. What does it mean to be a Tag? How long have protagonists Nicolas and Worick known each other? Why is the city so empty?

We start off in the narrow alleyways of Ergastulum, a seemingly clean city with a dirty underbelly. The city is well designed, but feels too barren and stripped down. Though this episode does feature some private meetings in alleys, it doesn’t explain the acute lack of people. I rarely saw anyone in the background that didn’t have some sort of interaction or affiliation with the main characters, which makes it a little more difficult to believe what’s going on in this world.
