Mark Wahlberg doesn't want to star in a superhero movie because of the costumes. Originally part of the hip-hop group Marky Mark and the Funky Bunch, Wahlberg transitioned into acting where he found himself involved in a number of high-profile, critically praised projects like Boogie Nights, The Departed, and The Fighter, to name a few. The actor has also found himself front in center in many high-profile blockbuster franchises like Tim Burton's Planet of the Apes, Transformers: Age of Extinction, and the upcoming film Uncharted.

One genre that Wahlberg has not been a part of is the superhero film. While Wahlberg has not been in a superhero movie, he did lend his voice to the superhero character The Blue Falcon in the 2020 film, Scoob!. However, other than that voice work, Wahlberg has avoided superhero films. Yet, his next few projects see him acting alongside some major superheroes. Uncharted will see Wahlberg opposite Spider-Man star, Tom Holland, and Shang-Chi star, Simu Liu, will co-lead Arthur and the King with Wahlberg. With so much overlap with superhero actors, it is likely many will wonder if he is ever going to join a project for Marvel or DC.

Wahlberg recently revealed to Cinepop, via Comicbook.com, that the reason he does not have interest in starring in a superhero film does not come from looking down on the genre, but more so, he can't see himself wearing the costumes. Wahlberg did not rule out being in a superhero film, saying the right project would get him on board. He also shared there is one superhero-type character he still wants to play, The Six Million Dollar Man. Wahlberg said:

"I like them enough, I'm not one of those purists who is like 'Oh this is not cinema.' I think the audiences decide and obviously, they [superhero movies] have been wildly successful. It's just that for me, personally, as an actor, I would have a really hard time walking out of my trailer with a cape on, and a spandex suit. But that being said, I was working really hard to bring The $6 Million-Dollar man to the screen, which is based on a TV series. And it was based on a lot of wish-fulfillment and what this character could do, based on what they did to him. But it was grounded in reality and you felt like it would be much more believable as being realistic, to me, to be able to play that part, and feel like 'I could do this,' in a way that didn't feel silly. But you never know: maybe the right part will come along! We'll see."

Wahlberg had been attached to a movie adaptation of the hit television show, The Six Million Dollar Man, since 2014, and the film was set for release on May 31, 2020, before Warner Bros. removed it from their release schedule back in 2018. The show focused on Steve Austin, played by Lee Majors, as an astronaut-turned-cyborg who works as a secret agent. While the character has many of the hallmarks of a classic superhero, he is known for his simple tracksuit, which is a more down-to-earth costume that Wahlberg would feel comfortable wearing.

Uncharted sees Wahlberg stepping into the role of Sully, a major supporting character in the Uncharted games, which could be an indicator of the type of role Wahlberg would accept in a superhero movie. While the actor likely would not want to play a superhero or villain, he could be open to one of the heroes' supporting characters, and in the case of characters like Korg and Miek in Thor: Ragnarok or Luis in Ant-Man, they have become breakout characters in their own right. With so many superhero films in development from Marvel Studios, DC, Image, Valiant, and more, there is no shortage of characters Mark Wahlberg could sign on for.
