Multiple Smurfs Movies Are In Development Starting With A Musical

There are multiple The Smurfs projects in development at Paramount Animation and Nickelodeon Animation, with the first movie set to be a musical. The Smurfs was originally a comic series created by Belgian artist Pierre Culliford, also known as Peyo. Since then, there has been multiple movie and series based on the characters. The most recent was an animated series released in 2021, simply titled The Smurfs.

 

The 2017 film Smurf: The Lost Village, produced by Sony Pictures, was the last time the little blue creatures appeared in a cinematic outing. The film received mixed reviews from critics and audiences but managed to bring in a worldwide total of $197.2 million. While the film wasn't a critical hit, it more than made back its reported production budget of $60 million, cementing the franchise as a money-maker in the modern era. Now, Nickelodeon has licensed the global rights to The Smurfs, giving them the ability to grow the world in new ways.

 

According to THR, Nickelodeon is teaming up with LAFIG Belgium and IMPS to bring The Smurfs back to the screen in multiple new films. The first movie in the franchise will be a musical set to be released around Christmas 2024. Pam Brady, best known for her work as a writer and a producer for South Park, is set to write the film. Production for the new movie is set to begin this year, with a planned release date to be December 20, 2024. As of right now, there has been no decision yet made on who will be directing the new movie.

Ramsey Naito, president of animation for Paramount Animation and Nickelodeon Animation, hopes to bring in new audiences and continue building on the world with the new animated musical. While Nickelodeon will be adding a musical twist to the movie, they still plan to keep true to the world and the characters Culliford created in his comics. This means Smurfs fans can expect to see Papa Smurf (at least) in some form in the not-to-distant future.

 

 

In addition to the movie musical, The Smurfs Season 2 will return following the 2021 premier of its inaugural season. The Smurfs Season 2 will consist of 26 episodes that follow Papa Smurf, Smurfette, Brainy, Hefty, Clumsy, and others within Smurf Village. While there is no information on the other Smurfs movies in the works, fans of the characters can look forward to multiple video games currently in development.

 

Nickelodeon is well-known for bringing family-friendly franchises to the screen. Adding The Smurfs to their list will help bring in new audiences and dedicated fans to the original movies and series to the network. It also creates opportunities for The Smurfs storylines to grow in new and exciting ways as Nickelodeon can incorporate its own twists on the world and the characters living within it. This will continue opening new doors for Nickelodeon and The Smurf universe.
