Saw 10 writer Josh Stolberg shares an update on the new movie's status, noting it hasn't been greenlit yet but teasing his excitement for the script. Stolberg first joined the long-running horror franchise with 2017's Jigsaw, which served as a revival of the series as police rush to investigate a new series of murders that seem to fit the titular killer's modus operandi, despite having been dead for almost a decade. Though receiving generally negative reviews from critics, Jigsaw was seen as an improvement from its predecessor and was a box office success, grossing over $103 million against its $10 million budget.

This success would lead Lionsgate to keeping the ball rolling with Spiral: From the Book of Saw, a spin-off installment in the franchise with Stolberg re-teaming with Peter Goldfinger to pen the script on a story concept from star Chris Rock. Released in theaters in May2021, the film received similarly mixed-to-negative reviews as Jigsaw and was a modest box office success, grossing over $40 million against its $20 million budget amidst the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. Though various talks of a Saw 10 have emerged both before and after Spiral's release, it looks like it may be some time before the next installment rears its head.

In response to a fan's question regarding a fan-made poster on Twitter, Josh Stolberg shared an update on the status of Saw 10. The screenwriter said he couldn't comment on the potential project as neither Twisted Pictures or Lionsgate have officially announced plans for it, but teased the potential heights the film will go. Stolberg's Saw 10 update may come as a disappointment for those eager to see the horror franchise return to the big screen, but it's also a largely understandable one. Word first began swirling in April 2021, a month ahead of Spiral's release, that Saw 10 was confirmed to be in the works at Twisted Pictures as a production listing from Production Weekly stated it was in active development with James Wan's Atomic Monster attached to produce alongside Twisted and Lionsgate. This would initially be downplayed by director Darren Lynn Bousman, however, as he noted it was a "premature announcement" that caught him and the producers off-guard and that the studio was waiting to see how Spiral performed before confirming a new installment.

In the months since this seeming confirmation, Stolberg has confirmed development on Saw 10 at various points, including teasing the return of Tobin Bell's Jigsaw. While his new update seemingly points towards the creatives behind the franchise awaiting word from the studio on the potential to move forward, Stolberg's new tease that it's his favorite of the three Saw films he's written thus far should come as an exciting prospect for the potential sequel. In the meantime, audiences can catch up with Spiral: From the Book of Saw streaming on Starz now.
