Rebels Uncaged first-timer Greg Hageman of Hageman Cycles in Tampa, FL, went all-in on functionality for his build, a project commissioned by the custom motorcycle contest put on by Rebel Yell Bourbon.

Hageman chose a base friendly to the common man: the new Harley Sportster. With its 1200cc engine, Hageman nicknamed the machine “Sandman,” after all the sand that went flying on his first ride.

Starting out, Hageman knew he wanted two things out of his build: A bike he knew he’d enjoy, and a bike that was highly ride-able for whomever was lucky enough to win it. He also kept in mind the journey, from the West Coast to Sturgis, the bike would have to make as part of the Rebels Uncaged tour. As such, he kept the mechanics mostly stock, so they’d be reliable and easy to replace in any region of the USA.

With its fuel-injected surplus of power, the Sportster offers a great option for bike enthusiasts and fresh riders alike, down to its push-button start. The bike is true to Hageman’s wider philosophy on bike building: If it can’t be ridden, it can’t be enjoyed. His bikes may not be flashy or groundbreaking, but they’ll get you home safe and sound.

To finish, Hageman chose ’70s AMF styling. Because he likes it.
