The Expendables 4 images tease a brutal fight between stars Jason Statham and Iko Uwais. The action franchise starring Sylvester Stallone as leader of an ever-shifting band of mercenaries kicked off in 2010 and saw its last installment arrive in 2014.

But now the long Expendables hiatus is over as Stallone is back for one more action-packed adventure in Expendables 4. And this will apparently be the star’s last time playing Barney Ross as Stallone says he will step away from the role and hand over the reins to Statham, who by now is himself an iconic action star. The fourth Expendables will like the past three feature an all-star cast, this time including The Raid star Uwais as the villain, along with 50 Cent, Megan Fox, Andy Garcia, Tony Jaa, Dolph Lundgren, Sheila Shah, Randy Couture, Jacob Scipio, Levy Tran and Eddie Hall.

The inclusion of Uwais in the Expendables 4 cast is indeed a welcome development as the martial arts expert and international action hero has developed quite a following himself. The latest images released from behind-the-scenes of the fourth Expendables indeed feature Uwais along with Statham as the two stars’ characters get into what figures to be a brutal one-on-one battle. Uwais’ martial arts expertise and stunt coordinating background no doubt have come in handy on the set of The Expendables 4. Indeed for action movie fanatics, especially those who appreciate action films from around the globe, the chance to see Uwais and Statham square off automatically becomes the main draw of the fourth movie in the Expendables series. Of course Stallone still has more than a few devotees too and doubtless many of his fans will catch the movie to see his Barney Ross bow out after a decade of kicking butt and taking names. It was also recently revealed that an Expendables TV show is being considered by Millennium Media, so fans could have plenty more action to look forward to (even if Stallone is no longer involved as a star).

It remains to be seen if movie fans’ appetite for throw-back action film stylings are strong enough to make The Expendables 4 a hit. But nostalgic affection for Stallone along with interest in Statham and the movie’s other cast members should help give the movie a boost at the box office. Uwais’ international appeal will no doubt also help the action sequel when it comes to drawing fans overseas. The Expendables 4 does not yet have a release date but it’s expected to arrive some time in 2022.
