Andrew Garfield only shared the secret of his Spider-Man: No Way Home role with a few people, mostly within his family. Garfield kept the internet on their toes throughout 2021 as rumors swirled that he would reprise his Peter Parker for the first time since 2014's The Amazing Spider-Man 2 in No Way Home. As he promoted other films like The Eyes of Tammy Faye and tick, tick... BOOM!, he lied about his involvement with the MCU film, even as images of him on set leaked online.

As the movie's December release finally confirmed, Garfield is in fact in No Way Home. He, just like Maguire, appears in the film's final act to give Holland's Peter some key superhero advice and assist in sending the villains from other universes back to where they came from. Since then, fans have been celebrating Garfield's version of the character online and calling on Sony to make The Amazing Spider-Man 3. So far, nothing is officially in the works, but Garfield has shown his willingness to return.

Right now, though, he's enjoying his victory lap. Garfield has remarked on his Spider-Man return multiple times over the past few weeks, and most recently, he appeared on The Ellen DeGeneres Show to talk about his amazing year. On the subject of the secret he kept in the lead-up to No Way Home, Garfield admitted there were a few people he told. "My dad, my brother, and my mother at the time," he said. "Yeah, just kind of us."

Even though practically everyone worked out his involvement with Spider-Man: No Way Home ahead of time, Garfield still worked to keep it a secret. He admitted recently that lying about it was the best option, and that he even had a lot of fun doing it. Garfield was so committed to keeping it a secret, he lied to his Amazing Spider-Man co-star Emma Stone. His efforts went deep, though he at least knew better than to keep it from his family. There are some people you just can't lie to.

His role in the film was the worst kept secret in Hollywood, yet it also didn't diminish fans' excitement at seeing Garfield walk through a portal in Spider-Man: No Way Home. It speaks to both his portrayal and the sheer delight of No Way Home as a whole that knowing certain things didn't ruin the overall experience. Garfield himself seems pleased with how everything panned out, which ultimately is what is most important. He didn't have the best experience with the Amazing Spider-Man movies, but at least with No Way Home, he got redemption in several ways.
