Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Villain Spinoff Movies In The Works

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles is getting a series of spinoffs focused on the franchise’s various villains. TMNT began life in the 1980s as an underground comic book from creators Kevin Eastman and Peter Laird and later became a massive franchise encompassing multiple media.

The early popularity of Leonardo, Raphael, Donatello and Michelangelo of course grabbed the eye of Hollywood and led to 1990’s live-action Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles theatrical film. Five more big screen TMNT projects would follow: a pair of direct sequels in 1991 and 1993 and a Michael Bay-produced reboot in 2014 that led to the 2016 sequel Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows. Now there is set to be another start-over for the franchise as Seth Rogen takes on the role of producing a computer animated TMNT movie set for 2023 release while a separate live-action film is also in development that boasts SNL regular Colin Jost and his brother Casey as writers.

 

Now it turns out those two movie projects are not all that TMNT fans have to look forward to in the coming years. As just revealed at Paramount’s Investor Event (via Culture Crave), plans are moving ahead for a series of TMNT spinoffs focused on the franchise’s villains. Instead of releasing on the big screen, the spinoffs will arrive on the Paramount+ streaming service.

 

Given the long history of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles across various types of media, it’s no surprise that there’s by now a lengthy list of villainous characters for these new spinoffs to draw from. The Shredder is of course probably the most notorious of all TMNT bad guys, but there are other intriguing figures who could be in line to head a spinoff of their own, including Baxter Stockman, Bebop And Rocksteady, Krang, The Rat King, The Triceratons, Hun, Karai and numerous more.

 

Of course it’s long been the tendency for owners of valuable IP to craft as much content as they can around those brands until the money well finally runs dry. But with streaming now entering the picture, studios are further ramping up their efforts to expand their various content universes as much as possible. It’s clear that Paramount is banking on TMNT being a major player for them as they build up a roster of shows for their Paramount+ streaming network. Nostalgia obviously is a big factor when it comes to TMNT, as the property has been around since the 1980s, meaning multiple generations of fans have grown up on the exploits of the titular turtles. The villains of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles now get their chance to take some of the spotlight away from those heroes in a half-shell as Paramount endeavors to get maximum value out of one of their most popular properties.
