The trailer for Hulu's new original movie, Crush, has just been released, teasing a teenage LGBTQ+ rom-com. The film is directed by Sammi Cohen (CollegeHumor Originals) and produced by American High, the studio behind Hulu's recent comedies, Plan B (2021) and Sex Appeal (2022). Kirsten King, and Casey Rackham make up the writing team as two LGBTQ+ writers hailing from BuzzFeed's former and current editorial team, respectively. The film features Rowan Blanchard (Snowpiercer), Auli’i Cravalho (Moana), Isabella Ferreira (Love, Victor), and Tyler Alvarez (American Vandal). Crush also stars Teala Dunn, Rico Paris, and Addie Weyrich, with Aasif Mandvi, Michelle Buteau, and Megan Mullally rounding out the authority figures of

Hulu's recently dropped Crush trailer reveals that the new film will follow a CalArts hopeful who joins her school's track team in pursuit of her titular crush, but realizes that who she originally had her eye one might not be the one who steals her heart. Along the way she's aided by her self-described "platonic soulmate" of a best friend, who looks out for her by helping her navigate the LGBTQ+ love scene at their high school. The film appears to tackle the age old push-and-pull between arts and athletics, with the protagonist being on both sides of the fence. The trailer for Crush ends with a voice over from the lead saying "I'm learning that when it comes to art, you can't force it. It's a lot like love,"  which seems to encapsulate the heart of what Crush is getting at. Check out the full trailer below:

Hulu's 2021 film, Plan B, was a teenage comedy that was received warmly by audiences and critics alike. However, their most recent endeavor to add to the genre with rom-com, Sex Appeal, had far less success with audiences and was ultimately doomed to be compared to the more successful Netflix show, Sex Education. Despite its hit-or-miss track record, there's a growing appetite for more teenage rom-coms that positively portray the experience of LGBTQ+ high schoolers, fueled by the success of films like Booksmart (2019) and The Half of It (2020). The trailer for Crush promises a diverse rom-com that could live up to the audience adoration of such films, while also capitalizing off of the smart comedy and friendship that made Plan B a success. Audiences will have the chance to see if Crush makes another successful debut for Hulu when it releases exclusively on the streaming platform on April 29.
