Adam Sandler has officially confirmed his reunion with Uncut Gems directors Josh and Benny Safdie (collectively known as the Safdie brothers) on a new film project. Sandler made a name for himself starring in comedies during the '90s and more recently in his straight-to-streaming productions, but his role as the gambling-addicted NYC jeweler Howard Ratner in Uncut Gems proved the actor had the chops to take more dramatic roles. The 2019 crime-thriller was a massive success with critics, and despite being snubbed at the Oscars, Sandler and the Safdie brothers still managed to pick up Independent Spirit Awards for Best Male Lead and Best Director respectively. Rumors were already swirling earlier in April that Sandler was teaming up with the Safdies again to make a new movie that so far has kept all plot and production details under wraps.

Sandler himself confirmed exclusively to EW that the rumors were true that he was working on a new movie with the Safdies, but he kept tight-lipped on any further details. What he did do was praise the work ethic of the Safdie brothers, who he claims have been hard at work writing and thinking of new ideas since the success of Uncut Gems. He continued on to give the diplomatic answer that he didn't know what specific details he was allowed to say, but that the new project was "different" and "gonna be very exciting." Read Sandler's full comment below:

[The Safdie Brothers are] working hard on it. Their work ethic is bananas. They're always working, always writing, always thinking. I don't know what I can tell you, but it's gonna be very exciting. It's different. But I don't want them to ever say, 'What the hell did you tell him that for?' So I'll just let them talk [about it].

Sandler's upcoming basketball drama Hustle and science-fiction drama Spaceman for Netflix already have the actor on the road to being taken more seriously by the film industry that has largely panned his recent comedies for the streamer. Without any plot details revealed it's hard to speculate what the Safdies have cooked up, but based on their most recent feature films, Good Time and Uncut Gems, it's likely their new film will follow suit with a thrilling tone and high production quality. It's still unknown if they'll also team up with A24 again as the distributor took on their previous two films, but with their recent successes, they probably don't need to worry too much. Hopefully, as time passes, Sandler or the Safdie Brothers will reveal more details about the film and will clue audiences in to whether or not they can expect another Uncut Gems level performance from the one and only Adam Sandler.
