  3. Some scar-forming cells in the heart have the ability to turn into cells that form blood vessels, which are required to boosts the heart's ability to heal after an injury, an Indian-origin researcher has found, suggesting a new approach to treat heart attack. The team of researchers he led also found that a drug could enhance this phenomenon - turning the scar-forming cells in the heart, known as fibroblasts to endothelial cells that form blood vessels - and improve the repair process after a heart attack. "Our findings suggest the possibility of coaxing scar-forming cells in the heart to change their identity into blood vessel-forming cells, which could potentially be a useful approach for better heart repair," said the study's senior author Arjun Deb, associate professor of medicine at the University of California-Los Angeles in the US. "It is well known that increasing the number of blood vessels in the injured heart following a heart attack improves its ability to heal," Deb added. Through experiments on mice in which scar-forming cells in the heart were genetically labelled, the researchers discovered that many of the fibroblasts in the heart's injured region changed into endothelial cells. This process contributed directly to blood vessel formation - a phenomenon they called mesenchymal-endothelial transition or MEndoT. The researchers also identified a molecular mechanism that regulated MEndoT and found that administering a small molecule to augment MEndoT led to less scarring and allowed the heart to heal more completely. The study appeared in the journal Nature. Source: http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/life-style/health-fitness/health/A-new-drug-soon-to-treat-heart-attack/articleshow/44834264.cms
  4. India tops the world in heart attacks among 35-plus men. The young male heart is under attack. It's not just that Indian men lead the global list in under-40 heart attacks. 78 per cent of men between 30-34 run the risk of a heart attack. And their hearts are ageing faster than their real age. Consider the case of Ashmith Patel, 34, went to the doctor after he felt pain in his left arm and neck and was surprised when he was told that it was a mild heart attack. He was operated on, and the doctors blamed his attack on his stressful job, high-calorie intake and a sedentary lifestyle. "I've always been fairly healthy and rarely found the need to visit the doctor. I didn't think my eating habits were all that bad; my father is 65 years old and has never suffered from a serious ailment," says Ashmith. He is not alone. "I get a lot of young men with very advanced heart disease That You Would Typically Find In Elderly Patients," Says Dr. N. O. Bansal, Professor And Head. Dept Of Cardiology Grant Medical College and Sir J. J. Group of Hospital, Mumbai. He Also Advises That Those With high risk for CAD (high levels of stress, family history, sedentary lifestyle) it is important to have periodic checks of body weight, blood pressure, blood glucose, serum cholesterol and in case there is any abnormality then one must seek appropriate medical care from qualified physicians." Dr. Rahul Patil, Cardiologist, Hridayam Heart Care Clinic, Pune concurs with the view. He observes that "Young Indinans are more susceptible to heart disease with a rate of 12 per cent compared to a rate of 5-6 per cent in western countries. He blames the poor lifestyle, excessive stress, smoking and consumption of tobacco & nutritional deficiency of B12 as prime causes for the increase in heart attacks." The 30s is when the body reaches its aerobic prime, endurance peaks and one can still laugh at botoxed faces. But what should be the best of times is becoming the worst of times for men. Dr. Achyut R. Sarkar, Ass. Prof of Cardiology, IPGME&R, Kolkata adds "Fatality from Heart Disease is now at the top of all diseases among 35 plus men in India. It is going to be almost an epidemic in the coming decade. You can cut down the risk significantly by quitting smoking, active exercise and balanced diet with minimum carbohydrate and fat." We are genetically three times more vulnerable to heart attacks compared to Caucasians. We are also the diabetes capital of the world. That makes matters worse. On an average, the lifespan of Indians suffering from heart disease is much lower than their western counterparts. "Indian hearts are different," Dr. B. Asha Latha, Prof. of Cardiology, Sri Jayadeva Institute of Cardiovascular Science & Research, Bangalore adds. Incidence of heart attacks is more in young Indians than their western counterparts as they have small arteries, Symptom X (Trunkal Obesity, High TGL, NIDDM), smoking and high incidence of diabetes. She also expresses concern at the ease with which Indians are falling prey to the western food culture (burgers, pizzas, etc), less exercise and stress." The interheart study, conducted on 26,000 people for five years (and published in the Journal of the American Medical Association in 2007), first burst the theory. "It was found that factors that explain heart attacks in the rest of the world held true for Indians, too." At any given level of cholesterol, the ratio of total cholesterol to HDL is higher in Indians." High total cholesterol to hdl ratio indicates high risk of heart attacks. Moreover, if one is a smoker with high to normal levels of blood sugar and pressure, then even a borderline cholesterol level of 200 mg/dL, would put one at high risk. The bottom line is, youth is no longer a protection against heart diseases Your blood vessels can stay young for a longer period if you avoid smoking, unhealthy fats, alcohol, excessive caffeine and take less than 4-5 gm of salt a day. 9. There's so much being written about mindfulness today. Being alert by silencing the mind so you get in tune with the moment — is being thought of the mantra to work success. Not only do those calming moments help keep you safe from stress, it also aids in better sleep and a better control over one's emotions. More companies are waking up to the realisation that inner calm raises energy levels which in turn leads to a positive and more efficient employee. To tap into this 'power' you just take 10 minutes (or more, if you have time), choose a quiet corner to begin. Start with breathing in for five seconds, hold your breath for another five s seconds and release it, exhaling slowly. It's important to concentrate on your breath. A Buddhist technique is to do the 'Inner Smile', while mediating. Here, with eyes closed you focus on your forehead and smile. This builds inner calm. Visualisation techniques are also used, where you take deep breaths and imagine beautiful scenery like a quiet walk on a beach. After 10 minutes, you snap back to work, feeling more at peace. Top 5 benefits of meditation · Lowers high blood pressure. · Decreases stress anxiety. · Lessens muscle tension and spasms. · Alleviates depression and improves the mood. · Boosts the immune system. 10. You may have come across videos in social media showing how you can whiten your teeth simply by brushing them with a fruit and baking soda mixture. Researchers have found that such a do-it-yourself method does not actually work. The strawberry and baking soda formula produced no whitening, other than removing superficial debris, the findings showed. "The only benefit of the do-it-yourself method (strawberries and baking soda) is while it seems to make your teeth look whiter, they look whiter because you are just removing plaque accumulation on your teeth," said So Ran Kwon, sole author of the study and associate professor at the University of Iowa in the US. "You really want something that penetrates into your teeth and breaks down the stain molecules. If you do not have that, you get just the superficial, and not the whitening from the inside, which was what you really want," Kwon aded. The main reason why strawberries do not work as teeth whiteners is their chemistry. They may taste great, but they are utterly lacking in hydrogen peroxide and carbamide peroxide, key ingredients in tooth-whitening products, according to the American Dental Association. Apples and lemons, also popularly advocated as tooth whiteners, have no hydrogen peroxide and carbamide peroxide, suggesting their effectiveness as tooth whiteners would be limited as well, although Kwon did not directly test those fruits. For the study, the researcher compared a homemade strawberry-baking soda recipe with other remedies, such as over-the-counter products and professional whitening. The teeth brushed with the strawberry-baking soda mixture showed no real whitening, based on two well-known colour-measurement tests and evaluations with a spectrophotometer. All other methods produced discernible whitening in the observational and instrumental tests, the study found. The findings appeared in the journal Operative Dentistry. 14. In today's world, when there is so much stress and people are hard-pressed for time, there isn't enough time to relax. Hence, sleeping disorders are commonplace. Like a balanced diet and exercise are important to stay healthy, sleep ensures that your body gets proper rest and is rejuvenated. Here are some ways to get a good night's sleep... Sleep at a fixed time: It is important to go to sleep at a fixed time. This doesn't mean just going to bed at the same time every day, but actually falling asleep at that time.Ensure that you follow this strictly. Don't go to bed right after dinner: Apart from keep your dinner light, make sure that you give a gap of at least two hours between dinner and bedtime. Chances are that you will keep tossing and turning if your stomach is full before going to bed. Wash your face and feet: Taking a shower is a good idea before going to bed, since it helps you relax, but if this is too much of a hassle, then make sure that you wash your face and feet before hitting the sack. This way, the day's stress will literally get washed away. Wake up at the same time: Just like you sleep at a fixed time, you must wake up at the same time each day as well. If you sleep well, then you don't need an alarm to get up at the same time every day . Try to maintain this over the weekend as well. Workout in the evenings: While it is advisable to start your day with a workout, it also makes sense to work out in the evening. This way, you can shake the stress of the day away and burn a good number of calories. This is bound to tire you out, thereby ensuring that you sleep well. Don't carry a book to bed: Many people are of the habit of reading before going to sleep, but this can keep you up longer than you would want. Finish reading on the couch or chair and don't take your book to bed. Sleep in a dark room: If you are someone who needs to have a light on at night, break this habit. You can instead switch on a night bulb in another room. Your bedroom should be devoid of any light as this helps you sleep better. Keep noise at bay: Just like you should keep books away from your bed, ensure that your iPod isn't with you in bed. Apart from tampering with your sleep, listening to music while in bed is also an unhealthy practice. De-clutter your bed: The number of items on your bed are also responsible for the quality of your sleep. Make sure that your bed is comfortable and only has the things that are required, such as pillows, sheets and blankets. Everything else should be taken off. Avoid caffeine: Follow a healthy diet and ensure that you don't consume caffeine since it tends to mess with your sleep cycle. Steam: If your little one suffers from cold and has trouble breathing, get him/her to take steam. Make the kid stand in the bathroom with hot water running or simply heat water in a wide bowl and make the kid inhale the hot fumes for at least 10 to 15 minutes. Adding eucalyptus oil can also help soothe your child's system. 2. Honey: Known for its soothing effect, dip your finger in honey and let your baby lick it two three times in a day.
