Here's the list... Protein bars: Protein bars are very close to being considered junk food if not eaten in the right manner. Dr Seema Tyrewala, celebrity nutritionist, says, "People have a huge misconception about protein bars. For those who don't work out, a lot of protein increases uric acid levels, and is heavy on the kidney." She cites the example of a client who snacked on many protein bars in a day as he thought he was getting his dose of protein from them, plus they were tasty. "They also add to the cholesterol content of the body as they are heavy on sugar," she adds. Breakfast cereal: The popularity of breakfast cereal can be attributed to heavy marketing, which began in the early 19th century in North America. While earlier, they were oats and corn 'grits', it was the cornflakes that took the market by storm. But what's available these days is quite different, "Breakfast cereals are loaded with sugar. The ones that are made of chocolate and other sweetened dried fruits are high on calories. People should buy non-branded corn flakes that are cheaper. For sweetness, fruits or honey can be added as that's a healthier option," says clinical nutritionist Shilpa Mittal. "While cereals do provide nutrition, one doesn't know in what quantity they are absorbed by the body and we often end up consuming large amounts of sugar instead," she adds. Sports drinks: Marketed as 'beneficial to all', sports drinks are far from that tall claim. "Most sports drinks have sugar content that is three times more than what is needed," says Dr Tyrewala, who has often encountered patients who were actively working out but had sugar problems. "If you are consuming that much sugar, what is the use of working out?" she asks. People, she adds, need to read the labels carefully and see the amount and forms of sugar — including dextrose — that is included in the drink. Mittal reccomends homemade nimbu-paani as a better alternative. "It has the electolytes you need, and one can control the amount of sugar they want to consume," she explains. Multi-grain products: Products like flour and bread are often sold as containing 'seven-grains' , 'multigrain' and 'bran', but what the clever labelling hides is that the nutrients are added later, after the processing step. Says Mittal, "Most multi-grain products have very smart labelling. They cover up how there's very little multigrains present in the mix. At times, multigrain flour merely has 10% of wholegrain, which means it's not even one percent in one roti," she says, adding that people should instead make the flour at home. All of us have at some point, suddenly craved for something particular to eat. Experts, however, say there are scientific reasons you crave certain foods. Here's what your cravings mean and how you can overcome them — in a healthy way... Chocolate: When you crave for chocolate, it means that your body is low on magnesium and requires it. Experts suggest you have magnesium-rich foods like nuts, pulses and dates, packed with a healthy amount of magnesium. And if you must have chocolate, go in for the dark variety, which is healthier. Bread: Craving for bread? Experts say that when you eat carbs, they trigger the brain's production of serotonin. This hormone is also known as the 'happy' hormone. Swap that bread for healthy low GI carbohydrates, which energize you and make you feel full for long. Include lentils, oats, sweet potatoes and beans in your diet. Sugar: If you are craving for sugar, your body needs chromium. Stock up on foods like whole grains and apples, which have great chromium content. You could add dry fruits or honey in a bowl of porridge. This will fill you up, and keep cravings at bay. Red meat: Studies show that when you crave red meat, it means your body requires iron.Experts suggest you eat fish, beans, pulses and nuts, and go in for lean meat. Salty foods: If you crave for salty foods, you could be suffering from high stress levels. Chuck processed salty foods and opt for baked potato or popcorn. Meditation and yoga are excellent ways to unwind. Source: http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/life-style/health-fitness/diet/Overcome-your-food-cravings-the-healthy-way/articleshow/44772839.cms?

Impact of mental stress on heart varies for men and women, says a study. While men have more changes in blood pressure and heart rate in response to mental stress, more women experience myocardial ischemia - decreased blood flow to the heart, it found. For the results, researchers from the Duke Heart Centre at Duke University looked at 56 women and 254 men diagnosed with heart disease induced by mental stress. "The findings revealed that mental stress affects the cardio-vascular health of men and women differently. We need to recognise this difference when evaluating and treating patients for cardio-vascular disease," said Zainab Samad, study lead author and assistant professor of medicine at the Duke University in the US. After undergoing baseline testing, participants carried out three mentally stressful tasks - a mental arithmetic test, a mirror tracing test, and an anger recall test followed by a treadmill exercise test. During mental stress tasks and rest periods between tests, researchers conducted echocardiography to study changes in the heart, took blood samples, and measured blood pressure and heart rate. Researchers also found that women experienced a greater platelet aggregation, the precursor to the formation of blood clots, than men. "The women compared with men also expressed a greater increase in negative emotions and a greater decrease in positive emotions during the mental stress tests," Samad informed. The study appeared in the Journal of the American College of Cardiology. Case study: Shruti, 25, works in an IT firm. She started a weight loss programme three months ago, and lost about eight kgs. But now, she has started losing a lot of hair and is worried. Shruti is not alone. With crash diets and unreasonable weight loss goals becoming a fad, this trend of losing hair is seen in many weight-watchers, say hair experts. Cosmetic dermatologist Dr Snehal Sriram says, "It is a common phenomenon to lose hair when one loses weight (especially in case of crash dieting). This happens as dietary restrictions often lead to deficiency of micronutrients. This deprives our hair of nourishment at its roots." She explains that for our body, hair is the least important organ, as hair is not vital to body's survival like other organs — heart, lungs, brain, kidneys. So, whenever our body is put through any nutritional deficiency or stress (eg. crash dieting), blood supply and nourishment gets diverted to vital organs. Sometimes, certain diet programmes lead to micronutrient deficiencies, especially those of biotin, pantothenate and essential fatty acids which leads to dry and rough hair. These deficiencies cause severe hair fall. Dr Sriram says, "This problem can be dealt with the help of health promoting treatments, scalp exfoliation and rejuvenating treatments that make hair strong and healthy from the roots. Along with these, specific nutritional supplements containing biotin, calcium pantothenate, L-cysteine, methionine, zinc and antioxidants and the right hair care products can help combat the condition." A proper diet can affect your hair health in a very big way. Nutritionist Karishma Chawla says, "A balance of carbohydrates, protein and fat is a must. The right complex fibrous carbs — whole wheat products, fruits and vegetables — are extremely essential. A mix of lean protein such as egg and milk products are also important. Fat in the form of omega 3 items such as almonds, walnuts, fish oil and flaxseeds are good." Following these steps will protect and energise your scalp, ensuring that you only lose your weight and not your hair... - When starting a weight loss programme, also start on the right haircare regime based on your current hair and scalp condition. - Start specific hair nutrient supplements, ideally the ones containing all 14 essential vitamins and minerals — especially amino acids, biotin and calcium pantothenate. - Start having soya, sprouts, paneer, curd and egg whites. - Add colour to your food, especially antioxidants like two cups of green tea and two different coloured fruits (eg. pomegranates) or salads (carrots, tomatoes, beetroots, green vegetables). - Omega 3 fatty acids add shine and prevent frizz. Take three walnuts and one tbsp flaxseeds daily. - Drink two to three litres of water every day. Water is essential for hair too. - Start hair treatments early. Opt for treatments delivering the right nutrients directly to the root of hair, along with rejuvenating treatments. These make the roots strong and healthy, enabling damage resistance. Dos and don'ts - Don't skip any meal — reduce your portion size instead. Ensure small frequent meals with a balanced diet. Cut down on carbohydrates, but don't avoid them. Avoid saturated fats though. - Avoid foods containing preservatives — eg ketchups, sauces, aerated soft drinks etc. - Avoid smoking — this further reduces the nutrients reaching your hair roots. - Avoid further damage to hair until your hair roots are strengthened. - Especially, stay away from salon treatments that break the hair bonds, like straightening, colouring or even frequent ironing. - Avoid frequent hot mode blow drying. Air dry your hair or use the cold mode in the hair dryer. - Don't neglect that little itching and dandruff, as it can intensify and weaken the roots. - Use an antifungal shampoo two to three times a week, keep it on the scalp for five minutes for best results. Legacy of Kain (PC/ENG/2014) English | PC | 2014 | 4.15 GB Genre: Action-Adventure / Platform Puzzle LEGACY OF KAIN: BLOOD OMEN Gamespot Rating: 7.6 User Rating: 8.4 Blood Omen: Legacy of Kain is a top-down action adventure created by Silicon Knights and the first game in the Legacy of Kain series. The game was first released November 15, 1996 for the PlayStation, and later ported to the PC. A Saturn version was announced during production but later cancelled before release. In the game, the player takes the role of Kain, a nobleman who is murdered and given the chance for revenge by becoming a vampire. The game was praised for its great voice acting, moody atmosphere, and compelling storyline. LEGACY OF KAIN: BLOOD OMEN 2 Gamespot Rating: 7.6 User Rating: 8.2 Blood Omen 2 is a video game developed by Crystal Dynamics and published by Eidos. It is the fourth game in the Legacy of Kain series. Although chronologically it is set between the events of Blood Omen: Legacy of Kain and Legacy of Kain: Soul Reaver, the events of the game did not occur in the original history, and only took place in Nosgoth's history due to a paradoxical time-altering event which took place in Legacy of Kain: Soul Reaver 2 which distorted the timeline. It was released on the PlayStation 2, Xbox, Gamecube, and PC. LEGACY OF KAIN: SOUL REAVER Gamespot Rating: 8.2 User Rating: 8.7 Legacy of Kain: Soul Reaver is an third-person adventure video game developed by Crystal Dynamics and published by Eidos in 1999. It is the second game in the Legacy of Kain series and the first game in the series not developed by Silicon Knights. It is a direct sequel to Blood Omen: Legacy of Kain, and subsequently was followed by three more games, one of which, Legacy of Kain: Soul Reaver 2, is a direct sequel. 1500 years after the events of the first game Blood Omen, Soul Reaver chronicles the journey of the vampire lord Kain's lieutenant Raziel as he is killed by Kain and returns from the dead to exact his revenge. He is revived by The Elder God and becomes his "soul reaver", acquiring the sword "Soul Reaver" from Kain during his quest. The game was well received by critics and highly praised for its eerie atmosphere and a deeply intriguing gothic story, but slightly criticized for having a vast, difficult-to-navigate world. LEGACY OF KAIN: SOUL REAVER 2 Gamespot Rating: 8.0 User Rating: 8.7 Legacy of Kain: Soul Reaver is an third-person adventure video game developed by Crystal Dynamics and published by Eidos in 1999. LEGACY OF KAIN: DEFIANCE Gamespot Rating: 6.9 User Rating: 8.5 Legacy of Kain: Defiance is a video game developed by Crystal Dynamics and published by Eidos. It is the fifth and thus far final game in the Legacy of Kain series. It was released in North America in November and December of 2003, and in Europe and Australia in February 2004. The game acquired high reviews upon its release, with the site Gamespy giving it three out of five stars, and both IGN and TeamXbox rating it eight out of ten. The game was praised for finally answering many questions posed in previous installments, but criticized for its repetitive gameplay and awkward camera controls. Defiance continues the journey of the Vampire lord Kain and his lieutenant-turned-wraith Raziel. After having Raziel killed to be revived by the Elder God as a wraith during the events of Legacy of Kain: Soul Reaver, Kain travels backwards through time and is followed by Raziel into Nosgoth's past, uncovering the conspiratorial events that led to the land being doomed to an eternity of corruption. After establishing his free will by refusing to kill Kain when prophesied, Raziel discovers that Moebius the Timestreamer had originally manipulated Kain into igniting a genocidal war against Vampires until he was the last of his kind. In manipulating Raziel who has free will and thus whose decisions and actions cannot be foreseen by Moebius, Kain hopes to find a way to undo the consequences of his actions and restore Nosgoth to its former glory. Think women are more health conscious than men? Think again! Experts list five things that women should learn from men, which will actually be great for their health. - Participate in a sport. For some reason, men take part in more sports activities than women. Group sports, especially are not only great for team spirit but do wonders for your health. Regularly playing sports is said to improve bone mass, density, posture and muscle strength. - Never go on extreme diets. Women, far more conscious about their figures, tend to go on fad diets way more often than men. And a study has said that while 30% of men diet, for women it is a whopping 70%. Going on unreliable diets actually slow down your metabolism and one tends to gain weight easily. - Take a leaf out of your man's habits and stop lugging around a heavy handbag. Men tend to carry only essentials — wallet, keys, handkerchief. And while experts don't tell you to do the same, at least don't walk around carrying a heavy handbag stuffed with unwanted things. You'll save yourself from backaches, neck and shoulder ache. - You don't always have to dress to impress. It's okay to put comfort over style. While skinny jeans and high heeled shoes will make you look fab, in the long run they can cause health problems like nerve problems, yeast infections, heart burn, abdominal pain, bad posture, arthritis, hammer toes, bunions and back pain. Most of the computer users suffer from the symptoms of Computer Vision Syndrome (CVS) and an expert says that it is important to take breaks and blink regularly. According to a recent study, prolonged sitting while at your desk can increase your risk of heart disease, diabetes and stroke, reports femalefirst.co.uk. But that's not the only thing at work that poses a risk to our health. Around 70 percent of computer users regularly leave work suffering from the symptoms of Computer Vision Syndrome so it is important to follow a few easy steps to ensure sitting at a desk doesn't take its toll on your health: It is necessary to stay clear of CVS. It's possible, nowadays, to spend most of our waking hours surrounded by screens, from checking your emails and texts first thing in the morning, to working nine to five in an office, and then catching up on some evening TV or computer games before, finally, checking your trusty mobile again as you drift off to sleep. Although this technology has many positive effects on our professional and social lives, what is it doing to our health? One significant effect of constant screen use is CVS. "When we use a computer for long periods, we only blink around 4 - 7 times per minute. Our usual rate of blinking is more like 18 - 20 times per minute, so this is a significant reduction - it can cause symptoms such as dry eyes and blurred vision," said professor Dan Reinstein of the London Vision Clinic." Other common symptoms of CVS include red eyes, eye strain, double vision, headaches and difficulty refocusing the eyes. Reinstein provides his top tips on how to prevent CVS, and keep our eyes healthy and comfortable. - Take a short break from your computer screen at least once every hour; ensure that you move and look away from your computer. - Keep your computer screen clean. - Be conscious of blinking regularly. - Optimise the angle, height and distance of your screen. Being the wrong distance away from your screen can increase muscle strain and visual discomfort. - Be aware of environmental factors. Air-conditioning and fans can worsen the dry-eye symptoms of CVS. - If contact lenses make your eyes feel dry, avoid wearing them when using a computer. CVS is particularly common in contact lens wearers; at the London Vision Clinic, we often see patients who are choosing to have laser eye surgery because they find they can no longer wear their contact lenses for long periods, especially while using computers. - Drink plenty of water to keep yourself hydrated. - Avoid 'glare' from windows and overhead lights. - Ensure that your computer screen is not flickering. - And, most importantly, have an eye examination.
