Marvel's Wolverine is Already a Big Hit

Marvel's Wolverine Sales

Marvel's Wolverine has been available on PlayStation 5 for a short amount of time, but the game's sales seem to be off to a strong start. The latest PS5 exclusive from Insomniac Games, Marvel's Wolverine puts players in the role of the titular hero. Wolverine has long been one of the most popular Marvel characters, possibly only second to Spider-Man. Like Spider-Man, Wolverine has starred in several video games since the '80s, both as one of the X-Men, and in his own solo games.

Insomniac Games has been putting a lot of focus on Marvel, and it doesn't seem like that will be changing anytime soon. Marvel's Spider-Man 3 may have started development, and there have been leaks for years about a Venom spin-off game. Sony has yet to confirm the latter's existence, but Venom could help to ease the wait between games, just as Marvel's Spider-Man: Miles Morales once did. Elliot goes on to suggest that Marvel's Wolverine could also benefit from the release of Grand Theft Auto 6.

Analysts have been predicting that GTA 6 will lead to increased PS5 sales, and many new adopters might be looking for another big game on the system. Given Wolverine's M-rating from the ESRB, and the character's global popularity, it's entirely plausible there could be some crossover between audiences. Of course, GTA 6's release should completely change the list of top-grossing new PS5 games. Based on GTA 6's PS5 pre-orders so far, it's a safe bet that the game will take the top spot from Resident Evil Requiem, likely by a large margin.

The current success of Marvel's Wolverine isn't all that surprising, all things considered. Insomniac's Spider-Man games have all been well-received by critics, while also being commercially successful. PlayStation has put a lot into marketing the game, releasing a PS5 Wolverine console bundle, controllers, and more. The game also received a big push during State of Play presentations, and the PlayStation app was recently updated with a yellow background to celebrate the game's launch.

Between marketing and Wolverine's general popularity, it was unlikely that mixed reviews were going to do much damage to the game's sales. Marvel's Wolverine might not have received the same level of critical success players were expecting, but Insomniac is well-aware of the critiques. The developer has already hinted that it plans to "further refine the player experience." That means the game could see some updates specifically to address some of its weaker elements.

Plenty of developers have similarly polished their games after launch, turning around early negative reception towards titles like Cyberpunk 2077 and No Man's Sky. Marvel's Wolverine doesn't seem to require nearly as much work, but the end result could be a superior experience to the current one.
