  1. Lionel Messi has shied away from making major promises for the coming season but pledged to do his "best" under new Barcelona coach Ernesto Valverde. The Barca forward said he was not familiar with Valverde's style but believes his "good reputation" bodes well ahead of the new campaign. "I say the exact same thing I say all the time," Messi said at the team's celebration of a new sponsorship deal with Japanese e-commerce giant Rakuten at its Tokyo headquarters. "Whenever I start a new season, there is a very clear-cut goal, which is Barcelona would do its best," said the Argentina international who recently extended his contract with the Catalan giants. "Personally, I am very happy and looking forward to starting a new season," he said. "We would like to do our best. "Everything will become new [under Valverde]. We are hearing a lot about his very good reputation," he said, adding that he held "hopes on the new beginning." Source
  2. Barcelona have agreed to sign Nelson Semedo from Benfica Barcelona say they have agreed a deal to sign Benfica right-back Nelson Semedo on a five-year contract, pending a medical. The Spanish giants released a statement on their website saying the 23-year-old will undergo a medical on Friday, though Benfica also released a statement on 24 hours later saying they were still in negotiations with Barca. Reports in Spain say the Catalans will pay a transfer fee of more than £26m for the Portuguese international. Semedo, who played for Portugal at the Confederations Cup in Russia earlier this summer and was sent off in the third-place play-off win over Mexico, had been reportedly linked with a move to Manchester United. He played 63 times for Benfica in the past two seasons, winning two Primeira Liga titles. Although Benfica admit the defender is undergoing a medical in Barcelona, they issued a statement on Friday announcing that the deal has still not been completed and negotiations are ongoing with Barcelona. 3. Jose Mourinho ruled out any attempt to bring Cristiano Ronaldo back to Old Trafford after Manchester United opened their US tour with a 5-2 rout of the LA Galaxy. United manager Mourinho is keen to bolster his ranks further after already strengthening his squad with the additions of Victor Lindelof and Romelu Lukaku, who both made their debuts at the StubHub Center. But the Portuguese manager dismissed the possibility of a move to bring Ronaldo back to Old Trafford from Real Madrid. "We have never thought about it because he is too much of an important player for his club, of great economic power," he said. "We have not been able to find for whatever reason anything that could have made us think that Ronaldo could leave. "I'm not going to waste my time thinking about players who are mission impossible."
