Atari has unveiled a new installment coming to the long-running RollerCoaster Tycoon franchise, with a new developer behind the project. The last mainline RollerCoaster Tycoon game was released in 2016 and was not exactly a success, receiving mostly negative reviews. That said, the trailer for the upcoming installment has instilled hope in the community that the franchise could return to its former glory.

Titled RollerCoaster Tycoon Wonderworks, the upcoming business management simulation is being developed by Springloaded. The new Atari partner is best known for its cozy city-building game Let's Build a Zoo, which was released in 2021 and received promising reviews. According to James Barnard, the founder of Springloaded, the team has tried to "preserve the satisfaction of building thriving parks" in Wonderworks while also introducing new and fun mechanics.

Announced via a teaser trailer at the 2026 Gamescom Opening Night Live, RollerCoaster Tycoon Wonderworks plans to launch its early-access phase on Steam sometime in winter 2026. The EA version will be priced at $24.99 USD and remain PC-exclusive, while console ports are expected to be released alongside the game's 1.0 launch. One of the biggest changes revealed in Wonderworks' trailer is the visual shift, which has been compared to "miniature plastic models."

RollerCoaster Tycoon Wonderworks has yet to offer an extended look at its gameplay. However, from what has been shown so far, the game will introduce some anticipated features to Atari's theme park simulation franchise. For one, it comes with a new physics engine that allows for more intricate adjustments to roller coaster paths and other rides. This new engine also makes it possible for some rides to break down, causing mayhem throughout the park.

There also seem to be many more customization options in the upcoming cozy game, including full control over the color of every ride and more than 150 decorative items. It is too early to gauge how the franchise's community feels about Wonderworks. However, the early sentiment seems to be positive, with many fans hoping that it won't repeat the previous mainline game's mistakes. For those unfamiliar, the 2016 iteration of RollerCoaster Tycoon, titled World, currently has over 70% negative reviews on Steam, making it one of the worst releases in the history of the RollerCoaster Tycoon franchise. In the coming months, it will be interesting to see how the actual player base reacts to the latest installment once it enters early access in winter 2026.
