LA MUUUUUUULȚI ANI B-ZONE și la mulți ani tuturor celor care încă sunteți alături de noi. Suntem extrem de bucuroși că am ajuns în acest punct în care astăzi sărbătorim împreună majoratul comunității noastre. A fost un drum lung, plin cu evenimente plăcute sau mai puțin plăcute, care ne-a oferit unora dintre noi o experiență la care nu ne-am putut gândi vreodată și ne-a făcut atât copilăria cât și viața de adulți mult mai plină și mai frumoasă. Sperăm și ca de acum încolo să continuăm împreună, să ne bucurăm împreună, să ne facem noi prieteni și să putem sărbători împreună următoarele aniversări ale acestei minunate comunități. V-am pregătit o mulțime de evenimente în perioada 1 - 18 Septembrie și nu numai, pe care vi le vom prezenta puțin mai jos. ONE RPG COLAB (https://cfx.re/join/okq57v) Înainte de a trece strict la evenimentele de pe SAMP doresc să vă prezint o colaborare specială cu ONE RPG (https://cfx.re/join/okq57v) ONE RPG este un server de tip RPG de GTA V pe platforma FiveM pe care îl administrez. Ne-am bucura să avem alături de noi mai multe persoane care caută un server RPG unde te poți relaxa și distra alături de prieteni, fără să fii obligat să folosești voice-ul dar având posibilitatea de a-l folosi, și de a avea libertatea și simplitatea unui stil lejer de joc, care atrage cu sine mai multă distracție decât bătăi de cap. Am muncit o grămadă pentru a aduce gameplay-ul și sistemele de pe server în punctul în care există o multitudine de lucruri pe care le poți face, mai ales alături de prieteni. Joburi unice pe care le poți face în grup cu prietenii, facțiuni cu funcționalități mult avansate față de ceea ce vedeți pe samp sau pe alte servere de GTA V, sistem de arme personale, sistem de Jail unic, sistem de crafting, mafii pe care le poți crea alături de prieteni cu roluri automate pe discord, sistem de daily rewards care-ți recompensează zilnic activitatea, sistem de air drops la care să te lupți cu ceilalți, sistem de questuri care sunt active constant pe server, sistem de daily spin care urmează a fi introdus acum pe server, sistem de heisturi care de asemenea urmază a fi introdus acum pe server și lista poate continua muuuuuuult și bine. Vă așteptăm alături de noi să vă bucurați de toate aceste sisteme și de noile sisteme pe care le vom adăuga deoarece serverul are în spate o echipă foarte muncitoare, fiind siguri că nu vă vom dezamăgi. În caz de greșeală doar un admin 6 poate reseta linkul sau să-l schimbe. - după ce ați deblocat zilele de Quest pe gta v și ați revendicat premiile din interfața de /quest, acestea vor fi transmise în câteva minute direct pe serverul de samp spre a le revendica. - de revendicat pe serverul de samp folosiți comanda /fivem pentru a deschide un dialog cu premiile obținute unde veți vedea cât timp aveți la dispoziție până expiră dacă nu le revendicați. Trebuie să le revendicați și pe samp pentru a le primi. Așadar primiți un bonus pe samp de: $1,650,000 bani, 85 RP-uri, 15 Mission Points, 8 Wheel Spins, 1 Purple Crate, 21 zile Cont Premium (sau bani automat dacă ai CP permanent), 2 LEVEL UP, 1 Dealership Stock, 1 Car Slot, 1 Hidden Color, 4000 GOLD și 1 vehicul Vortex. Prețuri Shop Shopul nostru pentru serverul de samp și-a păstrat încă de la înființare aceleași prețuri pentru că am dorit să se poată bucura cât mai multă lume și să fie accesibil shopul tuturor. În mai bine de un deceniu de la înființare însă nivelul de trai a crescut considerabil pentru jucătorii noștri, iar pentru noi au crescut cheltuielile și nevoile noastre. Începând de astăzi prețul pachetelor de gold va fi ușor modificat, cu aproximativ 30% față de prețul vechi. Acest lucru ne va ajuta să continuăm cu munca din spatele serverului, întreținerea și dezvoltarea lui. Prețurile de gold de pe /shop din joc rămân nemodificate. V-am pregătit de asemenea mai multe reduceri pe Shop-ul din joc de care puteți profita în această perioadă. Ghidul de cumpărături Pasul 1: Conectează-te la contul tău direct pe website-ul RPG și fă click pe iconița coșului de cumpărături Pasul 2: În următoarea fereastră adaugă informațiile de facturare (click pe butonul albastru Manage Billing Information), ele fiind necesare pentru facturare. Lucrul ăsta trebuie făcut o singură dată, după ce ai adăugat datele nu mai e necesar să mai faci asta pentru următoarele comenzi deoarece rămân salvate. Pasul 3: După salvarea datelor de facturare mergi înapoi și fă click pe butonul galben de Buy Gold. Pasul 4: Fă click pe iconița de sub pachetul sau pachetele de Gold dorite pentru a le adăuga în coșul de cumpărături. Va fi disponibilă de asemenea o reducere la varianta PRO în timpul perioadei aniversare. La versiunea PRO veți putea alege unul dintre următoarele vehicule: Maverick, Shamal, FBI Truck (police logos patched), Barracks, Cargobob, Securicar, Linerunner, Tractor, Coach, Leviathan, Raindance, Pizzaboy, Berkley's RC Van. Am tot primit din partea voastră solicitări de a adăuga FBI Truck-ul ca premiu. Fiind o perioadă specială, am decis să facem acest lucru însă am modificat puțin vehiculul pentru a nu fi confundat cu cel de facțiune. Mai sus aveți o imagine reprezentativă. Rework Detectiv Odată cu aceste evenimente adăugăm și reworkul jobului de detectiv, oferind mai multă funcționalitate pentru acest job, mai multe beneficii și până la 10 skill-uri. A fost adăugat un nou proces de investigație, vehicule de job, posibilitatea de a munci co-op alături de un prieten, diverse minigame-uri, sistem de mentor în care puteți participa la job cu un jucător care are skill mai mare și care o să vă ajute să avansați mai rapid în skill. A fost refăcut de asemenea și /find-ul. Acum este posibil să căutați multipli jucători simultan în funcție de skill-ul avut. La skill 10 puteți ajunge să căutați până la 4 jucători diferiți simultan. Fiecare jucător va avea pe hartă propria sa culoare. Pe lângă asta au mai fost făcute și alte modificări de script. Am făcut inclusiv niște modificări la verificarea conturilor multiple conectate de pe același IP pentru a fi scoase de pe server și IP-ul banat temporar atunci când este atins un număr aproape de limita maximă de locuri disponibile pe server, pentru a face loc jucătorilor activi care vor să joace. De asemenea vom face niște modificări la spawnarea acestor conturi pentru a nu mai sta grămadă în anumite locații care provoacă lag celor din jur. Pentru începerea questului aveți nevoie de nivel 5 și 2 ore reale jucate pe Septembrie. Questul se poate face de 3 ori pe zi și poate fi recuperat. Premiu Principal: o sumă între $40,000 - $60,000, 4 - 6 RP, și 4 - 6 Gold la fiecare finalizare de Quest. Premiu Secundar: între 4-6 Rob Points, între 4-6 Escape Points, între 4-6 Mission Points, între 30-50 Wood, între 30-50 Cotton, între 50-100 Silver, între 30-50 Gold Ingots. Bonus #1: la fiecare 5 Questuri veți primi 1 Rotire la Roata Norocului. Bonus #2: la fiecare 10 Questuri veți primi un Crate aleatoriu. Bonus #3: la fiecare 20 Questuri veți primi aleatoriu între 200-300 Gold. Special Unban Vă reamintim că în continuare e disponibilă opțiunea de a vă cumpăra unban la prețul de 400 Gold dacă sancțiunea e mai veche de 6 luni de zile. Am hotărât de asemenea ca în perioada aniversară să ștergem la cerere NO UNBAN-ul din motivul banurilor jucătorilor care considerăm că merită asta. Atenție!!! Nu vă debanăm conturile, doar ștergem no unban-ul din motiv. Vom face asta doar pentru cine considerăm că merită, fără să oferim absolut nicio explicație nimănui de ce am făcut asta pentru un jucător și nu am făcut-o pentru altul. Vom șterge bunurile de pe conturi acolo unde este cazul și nu vom da explicații de ce am decis să le ștergem la un jucător și la altul nu. Cererile se vor face direct de pe contul care are un astfel de ban printr-un ticket pe website https://www.rpg.b-zone.ro/ticket selectând departamentul Anniversary Unban. Level UP Pe durata zilelor de sărbătoare va fi activ un sistem de Level UP. Pentru fiecare 18 ore reale jucate în această perioadă veți primi Level UP la cont. Puteți urmări progresul folosind comanda /levelup. Progresul nu se resetează, așadar puteți continua să progresați de pe o zi pe următoarea. Roulette Pe durata zilelor de sărbătoare va fi activă și Ruleta, care va alege aleatoriu un jucător de minimum nivel 5 și cel puțin 1 oră reală jucată în acea zi. Extragerile vor avea loc la orele 12:00, 15:00, 18:00 și 21:00. La ruletă se poate câștiga unul dintre următoarele premii: 1 Fragment Diamond, 1 Fragment Onyx, 50 Puncte de Misiune, 100,000$, 1 Free Spin, 1 Car Slot, 30 zile de Cont Premium sau 200 Gold. 18 Things to Do Evenimentul cu 18 Lucruri de Făcut în care primiți câte o sarcină în fiecare zi de sărbătoare este în continuare activ. Pentru a primi premiul de la acest eveniment este obligatoriu să finalizați toate cele 18 sarcini. Este important de știut că dacă nu ați finalizat sarcina dintr-o anumită zi, aceasta nu se mai poate recupera și nu veți mai putea câștiga premiul de la final. La finalizarea tuturor celor 18 sarcini veți fi premiați cu suma de 300 Gold. Sarcina voastră curentă poate fi văzută folosind comanda /18things. No Wanted for Illegal Jobs Pe durata zilelor de sărbătoare nu se va mai lua wanted la joburile ilegale. Non Stop Robs Pe durata zilelor de sărbătoare vom elimina restricția de a da rob la ore târzii, așadar veți putea da rob oricând. Half Jail Time Pe durata zilelor de sărbătoare timpul petrecut în jail va fi înjumătățit. Double RP Every Payday Pe durata zilelor de sărbătoare jucătorii vor primi dublu puncte de respect la payday. Profitați de ocazie și dacă sunteți online pe servere poate aveți norocul să cumpărați un vehicul nou direct din Dealership. Activity Reports and Wars Warurile în timpul perioadei aniversare (1-18 Septembrie) sunt opționale. Membrii celorlalte facțiuni vor avea raportul înjumătățit pentru săptămânile 1-20 Septembrie. Înjumătățirea o voi rula eu manual pe la începutul zilei de Luni. Jucătorii care intră în facțiune după ce a fost rulată înjumătățirea vor avea raportul normal. Switch Color Event Evenimentul de Switch Color va începe la orele 11:00, 14:00, 17:00, 20:00 și va fi marcat pe hartă cu semnul „?” la care trebuie să ajungeți. E nevoie de minim 2 jucători și pot participa maxim 30 de jucători la acest eveniment. Pentru a putea participa aveți nevoie de minim nivel 5 și cel puțin 1 oră reală jucată în acea zi. Nu puteți intra cu wanted, on duty sau cu checkpoint activ. Evenimentul constă într-o încăpere cu podele colorate care își vor schimba culorile. Alegeți culoarea anunțată pentru a nu fi eliminați. Ultimul jucător rămas va câștiga evenimentul. Premiul pentru câștigarea evenimentului este de $50,000 și 200 Gold. Hot Potato Event Evenimentul de Hot Potato va începe la orele 12:00, 15:00, 18:00, 21:00 și va fi marcat pe hartă cu o iconiță roșie la care trebuie să ajungeți. E nevoie de minim 2 jucători și pot participa maxim 30 de jucători la acest eveniment. Pentru a putea participa aveți nevoie de minim nivel 5 și cel puțin 1 oră reală jucată în acea zi. Nu puteți intra cu wanted, on duty sau cu checkpoint activ. Evenimentul constă inițial în selectarea aleatorie a unui candidat care să primească Cartoful Fierbinte (o bombă cu ceas). Acest jucător trebuie să scape de cartof înainte ca acesta să explodeze, altfel va fi eliminat. Pentru a transfera cartoful altui jucător trebuie să îi dați un pumn. Premiul pentru câștigarea evenimentului este de $50,000 și 200 Gold. Final Boss Event Evenimentul de Final Boss va începe la orele 14:30, 15:30, 16:30, 17:30, 18:30, 19:30, 20:30, 21:30, 22:30 și va fi marcat pe hartă cu un craniu la care trebuie să ajungeți. Jucătorul care ia pickup-ul va deveni Final Boss și va primi 100 HP, 1500 Armură, Deagle și M4 pentru a supraviețui. Pentru a putea fi Final Boss trebuie să aveți minim nivel 10 și 1 oră reală jucată. Boss-ul trebuie să supraviețuiască 10 minute pentru a fi câștigător. Premiul pentru câștigarea evenimentului este de $50,000 și 200 Gold. Rocket League Event Evenimentul Rocket League va începe la orele 19:00 și 23:00, fiind marcat pe hartă cu o iconiță la care trebuie să ajungeți. Este nevoie de minim 6 jucător și se vor forma echipe aleatorii de 3 versus 3. Pot participa mai mulți jucători, formându-se meciuri separate de 3v3 pentru jucătorii participanți. Pentru a putea participa aveți nevoie de minim nivel 5 și cel puțin 1 oră reală jucată în acea zi. Nu puteți intra cu wanted, on duty sau cu checkpoint activ. Evenimentul constă într-un meci în care veți folosi vehicule de tip RC și veți avea o minge. Scopul este de a duce mingea în poarta adversarilor și de a marca. Echipa cu cele mai multe goluri este determinată câștigătoare. Premiul pentru câștigarea acestui eveniment este de $30,000 și 5 RP-uri pentru fiecare jucător câștigător. Discord Events Pe discord.b-zone.ro până pe 18 septembrie puteți participa la diverse concursuri și activități precum Party Break, Activity Challenge, B-Costumes și altele, de pe urma cărora puteți obține diverse premii pe joc. Toate detaliile legate de premii și modul de participare se pot vedea pe serverul nostru de discord. Concurs Tiktok Echipa Social Media organizează un concurs pe Tiktok până pe 18 Septembrie. Ce trebuie să faci? - realizezi un videoclip tiktok dedicat RPG.B-ZONE.RO și încerci să-l faci cât mai viral. - poți aborda orice temă legată de B-Zone, de exemplu: momente memorabile, meme-uri și momente amuzante, wauri, facțiuni, jucători sau personaje legendare, istoria B-Zone, ce înseamnă B-Zone pentru tine, videoclipuri cinematice sau orice altă idee originală. Cerințe: - folosește hashtag-ul #BZone18Challenge în descrierea videoclipului. (fără acel hashtag clipul nu va fi luat în considerare) - videoclipul trebuie să fie public pe Tiktok. - videoclipul trebuie să fie creat special pentru acest concurs. - trebuie să aibă legătură cu B-Zone. - videoclipuri generate cu AI nu vor fi luate în considerare. - nu sunt permise videoclipuri furate, repostate sau copiate de la alți creatori. - nu este permisă creșterea artificială prin cumpărarea de vizualizări, like-uri, distribuiri sau folosirea de boți/conturi false. - orice tentativă de manipulare a rezultatelor va duce la descalificare. Premii: - Locul 1: 5000 Gold. - Locul 2: 4000 Gold. - Locul 3: 3000 Gold. Cum câștigi? La finalul concursului primele 3 videoclipuri eligibile cu cele mai multe vizualizări vor fi desemnate câștigătoare. În cazul în care există suspiciuni privind obținerea artificială a vizualizărilor, organizatorii își rezervă dreptul de a verifica statisticile videoclipului și de a descalifica participantul. We are incredibly happy to have reached this point, where today we celebrate our community coming of age together. It has been a long road, full of good moments and less pleasant ones, one that gave some of us an experience we could never have imagined and made both our childhood and our adult life so much fuller and more beautiful. We hope that from here on we will carry on together, enjoy ourselves together, make new friends and celebrate many more anniversaries of this wonderful community together. We have prepared a lot of events for you between 1 - 18 September and beyond, which we will walk you through below. ONE RPG COLAB (https://cfx.re/join/okq57v) Before moving on to the SA-MP events themselves, I would like to tell you about a special collaboration with ONE RPG (https://cfx.re/join/okq57v) ONE RPG is a GTA V roleplay server on the FiveM platform that I run. We would love to have more people join us who are looking for an RPG server where you can relax and have fun with your friends, without being forced to use voice chat but still having the option to, and where you get the freedom and simplicity of a laid-back playstyle that brings a lot more fun than headaches. We have worked a lot to bring the gameplay and the server's systems to a point where there is a huge amount of things you can do, especially alongside friends. Unique jobs you can work as a group with your friends, factions with far more advanced functionality than what you see on SA-MP or on other GTA V servers, a personal weapons system, a unique Jail system, a crafting system, mafias you can create together with your friends with automatic Discord roles, a daily rewards system that rewards your activity every day, an air drop system where you fight the others over the loot, a quest system that is constantly active on the server, a daily spin system that is about to be added, a heist system that is also about to be added, and the list could go oooooon for a very long time. If you make a mistake, only a level 6 admin can reset or change the link. - once you have unlocked the Quest days on GTA V and claimed the rewards from the /quest interface, they will be sent within a few minutes straight to the SA-MP server for you to claim. - to claim them on the SA-MP server, use the /fivem command to open a dialog with the rewards you have earned, where you will also see how long you have left before they expire if you do not claim them. Detective Rework Along with these events we are also adding the rework of the detective job, giving the job more functionality, more benefits and up to 10 skill levels. We have added a new investigation process, job vehicles, the option to work co-op alongside a friend, various minigames, and a mentor system where you can work the job together with a player of a higher skill level who will help you level up your skill faster. /find has been reworked as well. It is now possible to track multiple players at the same time depending on your skill level. At skill 10 you can end up tracking as many as 4 different players at once. Each player will have their own colour on the map. Beyond that, other script changes have been made as well. Among them, we have changed how multiple accounts connected from the same IP are handled: they will be removed from the server and the IP temporarily banned whenever the player count gets close to the maximum number of slots available, in order to make room for the active players who want to play. We will also be making some changes to where these accounts spawn, so that they no longer pile up in certain locations and cause lag for everyone around them. To start the quest you need level 5 and 2 real hours played in September. The quest can be done 3 times a day and can be made up for later. Roulette The Roulette will also be active throughout the celebration days, randomly picking a player who is at least level 5 and has at least 1 real hour played that day. The draws will take place at 12:00, 15:00, 18:00 and 21:00. The roulette can award one of the following prizes: 1 Diamond Fragment, 1 Onyx Fragment, 50 Mission Points, 100,000$, 1 Free Spin, 1 Car Slot, 30 days of Premium Account or 200 Gold. 18 Things to Do The 18 Things to Do event, where you get one task on each celebration day, is still running. Random Dealership Stock During the anniversary period, at random times between 11:00 and 23:00, the Dealership will automatically restock vehicles that are at 0 stock, at most 3 times a day. Make the most of the opportunity - if you are online on the servers you might get lucky and buy a new vehicle straight from the Dealership. Activity Reports and Wars Wars during the anniversary period (1-18 September) are optional. Members of the other factions will have their report halved for the weeks of 1-20 September. I will be running the halving manually myself around the start of the day on Monday. Players who join a faction after the halving has been run will have the normal report. Switch Color Event The Switch Color event will start at 11:00, 14:00, 17:00, 20:00 and will be marked on the map with a “?” sign that you need to get to. A minimum of 2 players is required and up to 30 players can take part in this event. To be able to take part you need to be at least level 5 and have at least 1 real hour played that day. You cannot join while wanted, on duty or with an active checkpoint. The event takes place in a room with coloured floors that keep changing colour. Pick the announced colour so you do not get eliminated. The last player standing wins the event. The prize for winning the event is $50,000 and 200 Gold. Hot Potato Event The Hot Potato event will start at 12:00, 15:00, 18:00, 21:00 and will be marked on the map with a red icon that you need to get to. A minimum of 2 players is required and up to 30 players can take part in this event. To be able to take part you need to be at least level 5 and have at least 1 real hour played that day. You cannot join while wanted, on duty or with an active checkpoint. The event starts by randomly picking someone to receive the Hot Potato (a time bomb). That player has to get rid of the potato before it explodes, otherwise they are eliminated. To pass the potato on to another player you have to punch them. The prize for winning the event is $50,000 and 200 Gold. Final Boss Event The Final Boss event will start at 14:30, 15:30, 16:30, 17:30, 18:30, 19:30, 20:30, 21:30, 22:30 and will be marked on the map with a skull that you need to get to. The player who takes the pickup becomes the Final Boss and receives 100 HP, 1500 Armour, a Deagle and an M4 to survive with. To be able to be the Final Boss you need to be at least level 10 with 1 real hour played. The Boss has to survive 10 minutes in order to win. The prize for winning the event is $50,000 and 200 Gold. Rocket League Event The Rocket League event will start at 19:00 and 23:00, marked on the map with an icon that you need to get to. A minimum of 6 players is required and random teams of 3 versus 3 will be formed. More players can take part, with separate 3v3 matches being formed for the participating players. To be able to take part you need to be at least level 5 and have at least 1 real hour played that day. You cannot join while wanted, on duty or with an active checkpoint. The event is a match in which you drive RC vehicles and play with a ball. The aim is to get the ball into the opposing team's goal and score. The team with the most goals is declared the winner. The prize for winning this event is $30,000 and 5 RP for each winning player. The series has provoked fierce debate about the way Parisiens and French people are portrayed as being mean, snobbish, lazy, unwashed, naked and with bad plumbing. Here's the thing. In my experience as a journalist, Paris can be a little chilly, and I am not talking about the weather. It all changes in an instant if a Parisien native likes you. Suddenly they are inviting you to dinner or even on holiday. As for Americans in Paris, they don't come off lightly either. Emily massacres the french language, she's too loud and opinionated and she sleeps with adorable Camille's seventeen year old brother and then steals her boyfriend! It's comedy, get over it. Comedy is meant to be in bad taste. Plus what we all want right now is a good helping of fantasy, romance and ridiculous levels of glamour and decadence, and that's what Darren Star delivers. Ditto the possibility of love, friendship, beauty and seriously good food and wine and I'll take it all, Paris mon amour! In Emily's new world, the streets are always beautiful, with an artisan boulangerie on every corner, and her world is suddenly full of sensual delights and intriguing, powerful men who are so into her. She has a wardrobe of clashing couture and she is about to get an education from love to steak, Van Gogh to French plumbing and how to survive in Paris when you don't speak French. Are you ready? There's just one thing. Don't come to Emily in Paris expecting to pickup where Sex and the City ended. Emily is more SATC's upstart, younger sibling. For starters, Emily is in her mid twenties, she is just starting out in life, and she is less worldly, introspective and sophisticated than SJP and the gang. She doesn't hide her excitement or opinions on anything from croissants to sexist perfume campaigns and she wears her heart all over her latest bag or bucket hat. She downs her tasting champagne in one girlish gulp and her only reference for Gabriel's native Normandy is the beach in Saving Private Ryan. But this is what makes her real and likeable. Reader, do you remember what it was like to be 21 or 24 and in Paris for the very first time? I do. I had my bottom pinched incessantly, the plumbing was definitely a challenge and the steak and pain au chocolat tasted like heaven. As for the fashion in Emily in Paris it's just as beautiful as in SATC, but less experimental. Emily favours a riot of colour and clashing prints and textures. She also likes to expose a whole lot of leg. As for the storylines, they are lighter, sillier, more romantic and strewn with cultural cliches. It's all so Instagram perfect and rather like stepping into a perfume ad for Chanel No 5 - it's Emily in wonderland which makes it the ideal escapist viewing as the nights draw in. Emily likes rules, hard work and status symbol labels as a cultural badge of success. She could be Margaret Thatcher's secret love child. She lives to work. One moment she is living in Chicago faking interest in her almost fiancee's Socks game; the next moment she grasps the opportunity to move to Paris and work at Savoir - the exclusive luxury marketing firm her company has just acquired. What could go wrong? Of course, there has to be some impediment to this charming scenario of a dream life in the city of love. There is. Her French colleagues hate her and cruelly brand her ‘la plouc’, the hick. Emily doesn’t speak a word of French, her enthusiasm is considered de trop, and so far her experience extends to marketing the hell out of pharmaceuticals and geriatric products. What could she possibly understand about the rarefied realm of French luxury goods when she has never set her well-shod feet in Europe before? She is branded ‘obvious’ as opposed to mysterious and je ne sais quoi sexy like her steel and sex bomb boss, Sylvie, brilliantly underplayed by Philippine Leroy-Beaulieu. Fortunately for us, none of this stops our plucky heroine from meeting insults with penis cake and flaunting her Eiffel Tower shirt at every Instagrammable opportunity. Collins is a force of nature as Emily, and handles the lighter comic moments with aplomb, while Luc and Julien are her perfect sparring partners, can we have more of them please? So far so good. Emily in Paris is fast, frivolous, often plain narcissistic, a reality free zone and as sugar sweet as a Mont Blanc. Have you noticed Emily hasn't even so much as looked at the Metro? Plus she only has to take a couple of steps on achingly chic streets and the next moment she encounters the most remarkable people from Mindy a runaway Chinese heiress slash pop star slash nanny with a hot wardrobe befitting a real Broadway starlet - to Camille a champagne heiress with the chef- boyfriend we all want to steal. Anyone for crepes at dawn? Suddenly, without clicking her heals, friendless and forlorn Emily has two new BFs in Paris. Soon the pavements will be paved with diamonds or bottles of de l'heure perfume. But who cares? It’s an adorable fantasy, I will take it. When life in the real world becomes Covid-grim out comes the fantasy and romance on Netflix and we love it. It certainly beats another depressing detective series set in the north of England about serial killers or dysfunctional families. Collins handles the comedy with the twinkling joie de vivre of Hepburn in Roman Holiday, if not quite the same degree of laissez faire innocence, regal rebellion and adorable insouciance. Oh and Ashley Park absolutely steals the show with her heartfelt version of La Vie en Rose in the park, dressed in a diva-worthy coat of white feathers, singing as if her songbird voice depended on every pitch perfect note. It's a moment when Broadway comes to Paris. It's also pure fantasy and sublimely magical. But there is a problem. Emily in Paris is clearly set in the present, with Macron as president, but nothing about Emily’s life new high-octane life in Paris seems to reflect the seismic events going on in the world from Covid-19 to climate crisis. Emily appears to have fallen down the rabbit hole into a near perfect version of the present. Even getting fired by Sylvie doesn't count, it's France! SATC did a better job of balancing all the glamour and privilege with grit and darkness too. Whereas Emily seems to reside in the equivalent of Paris Neverland, complete with spooning swans. As a result, the story of Emily seems to happen in a moral and social vacuum and it just doesn’t quite succeed in capturing the zeitgeist in the way that SATC did. If Emily is guilty of stepping over the real world, it does the lift the curtain on the secretive, elitist milieu of French luxury which has ruled the roost for more than a century. There are lots of silly, unwritten rules in luxury and fashion that one dare not break unless you want to be excommunicated. The snobbery and desire maintain a veil of mystique is real. Emily wants to lift the lid and it is fun watching her try. Look a little closer at the whip sharp battle scenes between Emily and her blowsy boss Sylvie and you are witnessing an existential crisis for the soul and identity of French haute luxury. It's a fight between old school marketing and the horrors of ‘opening things up’ and offering a peak behind the veil to the gawping ‘ringarde’ basic, Instagramming public. Emily is the cheerleader for the ringarde bitches of this world. Just a girl from the American mid west who loves Gossip Girl and flaunts cheap charms from Winetka in order to worship at the altar of French couture. “You need us,” she tells the couturier Pierre Cadault, who is horrified by her lack of reverence for tradition. Equally, he is tantalised by her bold ideas on how to reinvent his ailing fashion house and appeal to hot young Hollywood starlets, rather than his ancient clientele who have one very expensive foot in the grave. In a brief moment of candour, Sylvie tells Emily, “you want to open everything up and I want to close it down.” Technology and social media are tearing down decades of formality, secret codes and rules. Beyond the battle between the old and the new, Emily in Paris is a perfect binge watch if you hold your nose over the silly merde jokes, the rather naughty cliches about Parisiennes being rude, unfathomable, sex-mad, slightly crazy and fond of saying no to everything before they say ‘yes’. Because this just can’t be true right? One thing that does make me uncomfortable is seeing Mindy and her friends from Shanghai spray very expensive champagne over each other. It feels crass and wasteful in such dark times. Ditto the scene where a drunken Emily falls into bed with her friend's seventeen year old brother. No, that is just plain wrong. Lily Collins with Emily in Paris with Darren Star - Picture Netflix Is it bad taste? Yes. Perhaps Darren Star is taking us back to the greed is good decadence of the eighties. Any moment Emily is going to turn into Marie Antoinette and say ‘let everyone eat cake, we’ve got a drug for diabetes and obesity’. Does her lust for money, power and status remind you of anyone? Perhaps her creator is not just sending up American greed and French snobbery, but an ostentatious, rather selfish way of life which is equally endangered? But here's the thing. Emily in Paris isn't great, cutting-edge drama, but it is brilliantly fun, lighthearted, silly and entertaining. Darren Star has judged the mood perfectly. We are all craving escapism. Look at the rapturous mood on social media. I chatted to two ladies in my local cafe yesterday and told them I was reviewing the series. The excitement was unequivocal. They both loved Emily in Paris for the same reasons - the fashion, the glamorous storylines and hot French men. Oh Emily in Paris! I want to hate your joli jeune American in Paris. You really do know how to strangle a beautiful language and at times your life seems so self- centered and ridiculous. But hold on, I can’t do that, because I love your optimism, your shoes, your mermaid hair, your endless opportunities to dine out on real French gastronomy and your somewhat Wizard of Oz adventures and misadventures in this brazen fairytale vision of Paris where the Eiffel Tour always twinkles, no matter what disasters and scrapes you find yourself in. In Emily’s Paris there is no talk of Trump, climate change, homelessness or pick pockets and any moment I expect you to put on your red shoes and they will be Chanel, of course. It's a beguiling fantasy. Who wouldn’t rather be Emily right now biting into a pain au chocolat, motoring along the Seine with the heir to a couture house or sitting on Gabriel’s lap on the way to Champagne? Emily in Paris throws out cliches like strings of costume pearls, but it sparkles and twinkles like an chilled glass of Perrier Jouet and it crackles along with enough outfit changes, cat fights and French boyfriend shopping try outs to blow the gloom and uncertainty right out of Covid-19. It reminds me of my own Paris adventures. At twenty-five I went to Paris with less than £100 in my pocket. I had a wonderful time. Five years later I returned to interview Karl Lagerfeld’s latest actress muse, having been told over and over again that an interview with the designer for the Times was ‘pas possible’. Then, during the interview, Karl kept looking over at me, and eventually, he sent an assistant across and asked me if I would like to interview him too! An hour later, I was sitting with Karl at his favourite pavement restaurant, eating steak blu, with a Kir Royale while he proceeded to give me an interview at hundred and fifty miles per hour. He was outrageous, charming, erudite and spontaneous. So I always have a soft spot for Paris. Lily Collins is like a Henry James heroine in Europe. That wide-eyed startled appreciation and relentless thirst for life is uplifting while our collective wings are clipped. Through Emily, we can all fly around the city of love on a scooter, feel the flaky, chocolately pleasure of a proper pain au chocolat made with golden flour as it melts in the mouth and go out to play with Mindy or adorable Camille without a Covid care in the world. How I miss those carefree days with close girlfriends. Emily in Paris will do very well until the day we can visit Paris again for real. Who doesn’t long for that? And at the midway point, what we can say is that the patient looks healthier than it has in a long time. If the box office were up (which it is), but only because of processed franchise hits, that would be a mixed blessing. But the box office is up thanks to a great many commercial films that audiences experienced as unabashed and organic pleasures, from the bantery, media-savvy “The Devil Wears Prada 2” to the tricky, exbullient “Toy Story 5.” Then there were the megahit horror films, like “Obsession” and “Backrooms,” that came from outside the box, not to mention the pop performance spectacles (“EPiC: Elvis Presley in Concert,” “Billie Eilish: Hit Me Hard and Soft”), the crowd-pleasing behemoths with soul (“Project Hail Mary,” “Michael”), and the independent films with a bold spirit (“Is God Is,” “The Drama,” “I Love Boosters,” “The Furious,” “The Invite,” “Our Hero, Balthazar”…the list goes on). As Variety chief film critics Owen Gleiberman and Guy Lodge roll out their choices for the best movies of 2026 (so far), the news isn’t just that movies are alive but that they’re (almost) (kind of) thriving. Blue Heron In the mid-’90s, a Hungarian immigrant family attempts to settle and integrate itself into suburban Vancouver society, though their best intentions are frequently hijacked by the deteriorating mental illness of the black-sheep eldest son; through the eyes of his younger sister, caught between fear and hero worship, a formative tragedy plays out in slow motion. From a raw chapter of her own family history, Canadian filmmaker Sophy Romvari’s quite miraculous first feature extracts both devastating drama and a radically inventive formal inquiry into the boundaries between memory, memoir and imagination. That sounds like a lot, but “Blue Heron” wears its ambitions with humility, and its broken heart with a gauze of wise, measured perspective. This isn’t a film that leads with trauma, but with richly specific domestic detail and a vivid awareness of how children see and process the world around them. If the story on screen were pure fiction, it would be just as deeply affecting, though the elegance with which Romvari pivots into documentary is something to behold. — Guy Lodge EPiC: Elvis Presley in Concert You might ask: Why Elvis, why now? The simple answer is that Baz Luhrmann’s electrifying documentary, which is built around lavishly restored footage of Elvis Presley performing in Las Vegas in 1969 and the early ’70s, is one of the most thrilling concert films you’ll ever see. The slightly more complicated answer is that there’s still a mythology hanging over Elvis during this period — the Liberace-as-rock-god white suit and car-grille sunglasses, the sweat pouring off his shag-carpet sideburns, the onstage karate moves — that can add up to a vision of the king of rock ‘n’ roll presiding over a kingdom of kitsch. The reality, however, is that the early-Vegas Elvis was an ecstatic gyrating rock dynamo, more electrifying than Freddie Mercury, with that tremolo vibrato that transformed every note into a pearly gem. Diving into a treasure trove of newly discovered footage, Luhrmann turns it all into an elegant streamlined concert movie that makes you want to applaud every level of its showmanship. —Owen Gleiberman The Invite A bravura dinner-party dramedy that’s like “Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf?” remade by the Woody Allen of “Husbands and Wives.” Within those familiar tropes, the movie is so original, so brimming with surprise, so fresh and up-to-the-minute in its perceptions of how relationships work (or don’t) that you watch it in a state of rapt immersion and delight. Seth Rogen and Olivia Wilde play a grousing, long-married San Francisco couple who have their upstairs neighbors (Penélope Cruz and Edward Norton) over to dinner, only to discover that these two are what used to be called swingers (they’re now presented as “enlightened” New Age addicts of group sex). Will a foursome happen? That sounds like the premise of a certain kind of indie movie (let’s call it kinky-cute), but “The Invite” is blessedly not that movie. Wilde, who directed it, invests Will McCormack and Rashida Jones’s relentlessly sharp screenplay with an astonishing feeling of lived-in experience. “The Invite” is about horniness and loneliness and love and possibility, and about how the movie is going to take this situation and run with it, neither playing it safe nor making it too easy. —OG Is God Is What happened here? It’s one of the year’s bigger mysteries that this auspicious directorial debut from acclaimed playwright Aleshea Harris didn’t show up anywhere on the festival circuit before being released with little fanfare in May. In another year, you could imagine this furiously visceral and caustically funny female revenge drama being the toast of Sundance or SXSW; as it is, even many critics don’t know it exists. But time should secure “Is God Is” a following, especially if stars Kara Young (a two-time Tony winner) and Mallori Johnson blow up the way they should. More than holding their own against a supporting cast that includes Sterling K. Brown, Janelle Monae and Vivica A. Fox, they’re the year’s most electric double act so far as twin sisters, physically and psychologically scarred by childhood abuse, seeking to even the score with the father who wronged them. A marvellous writer, Harris is conversant in the languages of both ruthless exploitation cinema and radical feminist theatre, with filmmaking brio to match. Whatever she makes next, here’s hoping more attention is paid. —GL Obsession Curry Barker’s breakout feature is the hero in Hollywood’s biggest David-and-Goliath narrative of the last few years: a simple chiller budgeted at under a million dollars, it has made over $200 million to date, outgrossing a new “Star Wars” movie in the spring box office race. This would be heartening even if the film weren’t up to much; even more happily, it is. In a multiplex wasteland of infinite sequels and rehashes, Barker proves that well-turned original scripts don’t even have to be radically new to stand out. His reworking of the age-old monkey’s-paw trope is classically structured and executed, but intelligently rooted in the present: Its tale of a lovelorn young man wishing for his crush to reciprocate his feelings — only to find that devotion on demand doesn’t feel good at all — engages with the politics of codependent relationships, the toxic narcissism of the manosphere and even the dehumanizing dangers of AI. But it’s also just a frighteningly effective straight-up horror movie, with a jaw-dropping, star-making performance by Inde Navarrette as a woman trapped in one man’s will. —GL Our Hero, Balthazar The title character is no one’s idea of a hero, but he’s certainly a creature for our time. Balthazar, played in a hipster fade and with a puppy-dog scowl by Jaeden Martell, is a New York rich kid who acts out his boredom by posting videos of himself crying in the most tormented and “sincere” way. Playing off an online world where everything is now performative (I act out my supremely empathic vulnerability, therefore I am), Oscar Boyson’s cutting, audacious, at times astonishing first feature captures a new lost middle-class youth culture that has turned exhibitionism into its own reality. When Balthazar posts a video in sympathy with the victims of a school shooting, he starts to get messages from someone who claims to be the shooter. Has he found his grisly soulmate? Playing this other phantom lost boy, Asa Butterfield acts with a socio-bro attitude and a raw sorrow that seems to slice open the dark heart of what now drives so many lonely young men. “Our Hero, Balthazar” turns into a screw-loose buddy movie (“The Edgelord and the Incel”), but what it’s really about is a virtual youth culture gone nuts. —OG Power Ballad I believe in the marketplace enough not to say this too often, but John Carney’s enthralling music drama really should have been a bigger hit. It’s got everything his earlier films have — the melodic rapture, the touching melancholy of those who truly believe a song can save your life — but it’s also got a brashly unfolding drama that smolders with anger and loss. Paul Rudd hits the true note as Rick Power, a gifted late-’80s/’90s rocker who didn’t quite make it and is now a more-or-less contented husband and father who works as a wedding singer in Ireland. One night, he finds himself noodling around on a guitar and piano with Danny (Nick Jonas), a former boy-band singer who hasn’t been able to thread the needle of solo stardom. Months later, Danny has a catchy slow-rock hit — with a song he stole from Rick. Rudd doesn’t soft-pedal the darkness of playing someone whose dream has been taken. “Power Ballad” is the rare authentic drama about the music industry, but is also taps into themes of identity and ownership that touch on the mysteries of pop. —OG Rose of Nevada Back in 2019, Mark Jenkin’s microbudget breakout feature “Bait” was the unlikeliest of crossover hits in Britain, snaring both arthouse cinephiles who thrilled to his handcrafted evocation of grainy ’60s realism and regional audiences who felt seen by his proudly working-class, Cornish-set riposte to middle-class gentrification. Two films later, his time-travel puzzle “Rose of Nevada” feels like a veritable blockbuster by comparison — it even has stars, in the form of a never-better George MacKay and rumored 007 contender Callum Turner — but stays remarkably true to those gritty, grounded principles. Gorgeously shot on tactile 16mm film that lends the whole movie the look of a forgotten, sun-faded family photo album, it’s lo-fi sci-fi with a killer high concept, following two hard-up contemporary fishermen as they take a job on a rusty old trawler bound for the past. The less you know going in, the better, but Jenkin is as interested in the poignant human fallout of his big idea as he is in its brain-melting logistics. —GL Silent Friend How did “tree-hugger” become a pejorative? Shouldn’t we all love trees a little more? Rallying brilliantly after the disappointment of her 2021 Europudding “The Story of My Wife,” Hungarian director Ildikó Enyedi certainly thinks so: Her strange, sensual and unexpectedly sweet new film does much to dignify that hippie-baiting term, with a century-spanning triptych of stories — linked by one weirdly sexy ginkgo tree — that collectively probe the connection between human and plant life in ways you might not have considered before, much less seen on screen.
