A good laugh is always needed at a time of great loss and, unfortunately, the world recently lost one of the best in the business of laughter. Canadian actor and comedian Norm Macdonald passed away at the age of 61 on Tuesday, September 14, 2021, after a private nine-year battle with cancer, leaving behind an influential legacy of subversive, deadpan humor that made him a standout in some of the best comedy movies (or the best part of his movies, at least). Following the countless tributes that have poured out from fans and his celebrity peers online, we pay our respects with our favorite Norm Macdonald movies and TV shows with a tip of how fans can watch in his honor, starting with the legendary series that made him a legend. Saturday Night Live (Peacock) Some of the most influential, controversial, and unforgettable moments in the history of comedy TV shows came from this long, long-running sketch comedy series from creator Lorne Michaels that jumpstarted many of the greatest careers in entertainment. Why it’s worth checking out if you’re a fan of Norm Macdonald: One such person whose career took off during his time as a ‘90s Saturday Night Live cast member (Seasons 19-23) was Norm Macdonald - who might be the best “Weekend Update” host ever, especially for his merciless roasting of O.J. Simpson, which is said to be a reason he was fired, only to see him come back as host a year later where he roasted the decision. Billy Madison (Amazon Rental) In order to prove to his wealthy father that he is worthy of inheriting his hotel empire, a drunken, lazy man-child (co-writer and star Adam Sandler) must go back to school and repeat grades 1-12 two weeks at a time. Why it’s worth checking out if you’re a fan of Norm Macdonald: In his feature film debut, Norm Macdonald starred alongside his Saturday Night Live co-star Adam Sandler in the 1995 cult favorite comedy Billy Madison, in which he occasionally steals the show as the title character’s equally childish friend, Frank. Sharon Van Etten has collaborated with Angel Olsen on her version of The Velvet Underground and Nico’s famous track “Femme Fatale.” Van Etten’s take drastically shifts the tempo to a much slower and elongated pace leading to a more dramatic atmosphere overall. Olsen chimes in with some enchanting backing vocals that pair nicely with the calming composition laced effortlessly amongst the rest of the chilling indie track. Van Etten’s cover comes from the upcoming tribute album release I’ll Be Your Mirror: A Tribute to the Velvet Underground & Nico. The compilation tribute album to the quintessential 1967 debut alternative rock LP is set to drop next Friday, September 24. The forthcoming album features the likes of Iggy Pop and Matt Sweeney on “European Son,” Matt Berninger on “I’m Waiting for the Man” and Courtney Barnett on “I’ll Be Your Mirror” among many others. Van Etten and Olsen had previously teamed up on their single “Like I Used To” which came out in late May. Along with their first collaboration together, the two released an accompanying music video for the single. At the start of May, Van Etten released her latest project epic Ten. The project contains re-releases of her 2010 album Epic along with guest appearances from Fiona Apple, IDLES and others revealing their own renditions of Van Etten’s tracks from Epic. For more information on the release of I’ll Be Your Mirror: A Tribute to the Velvet Underground & Nico, revisit mxdwn’s coverage of the tribute album’s initial announcement. Source

The Polish extreme metal band Behemoth has announced a new live album In Absentia Dei, which is set to release on December 17. The group originally live-streamed the electric show in an abandoned church last year and are now set to release that performance as both a live album and a video this December. According to Loudwire, Behemoth leader Nergal described the unpredictable experience as a success. “In Absentia Dei was a massive challenge and a huge risk, but it was a great artistic and commercial success,” said Nergal. “The response was absolutely brilliant — we made a statement with this performance and set the bar high. I hope that we can continue to raise the bar with the projects to come!” Nergal previously launched a crowdfunding campaign called Ordo Blasfemia in response to being found guilty in Poland for “offending religious feelings” which resulted in almost a $5,000 fine. Rather than pay the fine, the Behemoth frontman launched the campaign seeking to fight the nation’s anti-blasphemy laws. Revisit mxdwn’s coverage of Behemoth’s initial announcement of their In Absentia Dei live stream from last year. In Absentia Dei Tracklisting: 1. Evoe 2. Wolves Ov Siberia 3. Prometherion 4. Dave Navarro and Chris Chaney of Jane’s Addiction have united with Foo Fighters drummer Taylor Hawkins to create a new band called NHC. The collective has released their first two tracks, “Feed the Cruel” and “Better Move On.” The trio’s two singles feature a solid rock sound that exhibits the group’s effervescent chemistry. On “Feed the Cruel,” Navarro shreds off some effortless guitar riffs while Hawkins provides a moshworthy backing beat alongside his stellar vocals. “Better Move On” takes a slower approach in comparison to the group’s other track highlighting an electrifying guitar solo from Navarro, some fiery fills and powerful vocals from Hawkins and a catchy bassline from Chaney. NHC’s name is an acronym for Navarro, Hawkins and Chaney. The group is set to make their live debut on October 2 at the Ohana Festival. According to Blabbermouth, Hawkins and Chaney previously played together in the ’90s in Alanis Morisette’s band and are also bandmates in Hawkins’s solo project, Taylor Hawkins & the Coattail Riders. Earlier this year, the trio of Navarro, Hawkins and Chaney teamed up with Slipknot’s Corey Taylor in a group called Ground Control to perform at a live stream celebration for the late and great David Bowie. Revisit mxdwn’s coverage of Taylor Hawkins & the Coattail Riders bizarrely cute music video for their song “Middle Child” which features Hawkins and his daughter. Source

The renowned metal band Metallica shocked their fans with a surprise show on Thursday night at The Independent, an intimate 500-person venue in San Francisco. A few hours before the performance, The Independent announced the event on their social media accounts stating, “Surprise, San Francisco! Metallica! Tonight! Don’t walk, RUN to our box office with $20 cash right now to grab a wristband! It will sell out fast!” Within minutes of the announcement, the show sold out. While the doors opened at 7:30 pm, Metallica wasn’t set to hit the stage until an hour later. According to Heavy Consequence, the band kicked off their set with “Whiplash” from their timeless album Kill Em’ All. This performance marked the first time they ever started a show with this track. The 16-song setlist also included four tracks from Ride the Lightning and a three-song-encore of “Battery,” “Fuel” and “Seek and Destroy.” Metallica recently dropped special reissues of their 1991 self-titled release known as The Black Album following the 30th anniversary of the LP’s release. However, they only performed the songs “Holier Than Thou” and “Sad But True” from the iconic project. The band announced a remastered box set edition along with the release of The Metallica Blacklist, a 53-track covers album of songs from their self-titled album. The Metallica Blacklist features covers from the likes of Phoebe Bridgers, Ghost, IDLES and many others. Earlier this year, Metallica announced two shows for their 40th anniversary as a band. On December 17 and 19, the band is scheduled to perform at the Chase Center in their hometown of San Francisco. Source

English rock band Placebo has made their return to music with the release of “Beautiful James,” the group’s first new track in five years. “Beautiful James” contains an artistic combination of brightly colored synths and a steady guitar riff which adds a complex frenzy of tasteful distortion on the chorus. Lead singer Brian Molko’s vocals float atop the backing track with ease. Marking the end of Placebo’s five-year absence from releasing a new track, “Beautiful James” has their fans excited for what’s to come. The new track is said to come from the band’s upcoming eighth studio album which will mark their first album release in eight years. According to Consequence Sound, Molko released a statement about the new song. “If the song serves to irritate the squares and the uptight, so gleefully be it,” said Molko. “But it remains imperative for me that each listener discovers their own personal story within it — I really don’t want to tell you how to feel.” Placebo’s last album release was Loud Like Love back in 2013. Back in October of 2016, the group released a greatest hits compilation album titled A Place For Us To Dream in reference to their then twenty-year mark in music at the time. In addition to the digital release for A Place For Us To Dream, Placebo also released the project on a double CD set and a deluxe vinyl set that includes a pink and black vinyl. Source

In July, the new streaming channel The Coda Collection shared their newest installment of From The Basement. A mix between intimate live performances and behind the scenes footage. The series is produced by Radiohead producer and studio guru Nigel Godrich and releases new episodes weekly. The newest episode features punk legends Iggy Pop & The Stooges from 2008. The intimate performance was filmed in a studio with no audience, and as Godrich recalls, Iggy Pop first seemed “a little weirded out” by not having a live audience to perform for. Watch the one of a kind performance of “Little Doll” below: The 2008 performance also shows part of the original lineup of The Stooges, which includes Scott and Ron Asheton and ex-Minutemen bassist Mike Watt, four years into the acclaimed reunion of the band. Ron died only a year later in 2009 and Scott in 2014. Both brothers died from a heart attack. From The Basement kicked off the series with a 2011 live performance of Radiohead. Since then, they released episodes featuring Gnarls Barkley (2011), Aimee Mann (2012), The Raconteurs (2009), Fleet Foxes (2008), Red Hot Chili Peppers (2012), The White Stripes (2007) and most recently Moby (2008). The episodes offer a sophisticated new view on live performances by legendary artists, that accompanied most of us throughout our lives. The Coda Collection is an Amazon Prime exclusive streaming channel, providing their subscribers with exclusive music-related content, including music films, documentaries and live performances. The site provides content from a wide range of artists, like Hendrix, The Rolling Stones and John Lennon and Yoko Ono. But also a vast variety of new material by such diverse artists as The Cure, Evanescence, Billy Strings, Jane’s Addiction, The Black Crowes, and the critically acclaimed Dave Grohl directed documentary ‘What Drives Us.’ Most recently, it was announced that Iggy Pop would be part of the upcoming The Velvet Underground tribute album, I’ll Be Your Mirror: A Tribute To The Velvet Underground & Nico, which is set to be released just next week, on September 24. Iggy Pop’s reimagined version of “European Son” with Matt Sweeney was unveiled just a few days ago. Source

Sometimes, I need a break from the fantastic shows that TV has given me in the last ten years. I need a break from the fantasy shows like Game of Thrones, or the amazing Amazon original series like The Boys. And, sometimes, that comes in the form of a show like the Netflix hit Emily in Paris, and I’ll admit - this show is my guilty pleasure. By far. That being said, I know that there are several things in Emily in Paris that just don’t make sense, from Emily’s age being a bit unclear to many other moments. While I am looking forward to Emily in Paris Season 2, I think it’s a good time to talk about certain moments in Emily in Paris Season 1 that just don’t make sense. That Real-Estate Agent In The First Episode This is one of my biggest pet-peeves from the show, right out from the beginning of Emily in Paris. The moment Emily gets that amazing apartment in Paris (which, by the way, in and of itself, would be impossible for someone with her kind of job to get in a city like Paris with a view as great as she had), that real estate agent is flirting with her - instantly. Not only is that incredibly unprofessional, but super pervy. The guy is literally trying to show her around the apartment and is asking her out on a date like that? I can appreciate how Emily turned him down very quickly since she was dating someone at the time, but it’s still a super weird moment. Also, why would he do this in any professional environment? This is his job we're talking about, and he's going to ruin his reputation by flirting with a client - a client who could report that to his boss. It just doesn't make sense. Source
