  2. Deadline reports that Ruby Barker, coming off her role on the popular Netflix hit series Bridgerton, has signed on to star in the high-concept horror-thriller Baghead. Led by Studiocanal and The Picture Company, the film is set to shoot in Berlin, Germany this fall. Barker joins Witcher star Freya Allan, who has also signed on to star in the film. Baghead will be directed by Alberto Corredor, director of the festival favorite short film of the same name. Christina Pamies and Bryce McGuire pen the script. The film revolves around a mysterious figure called Baghead, a decrepit, worn-down character who is able to manifest the dead and bring them back to the human world for a short interval of time. Those who seek out Baghead wish to reconnect with their loved ones. But they soon find out that once in contact with Baghead, the character’s true powers and intentions come to light, revealing a high price to pay for its service. The new feature will build on the storyline by taking on a Saw-like approach, adding in supernatural elements. Barker will play a key role in the film as a young woman who faces off with Baghead to put a stop to its evil. In Bridgerton, she played the role of Marina Thompson. The show was watched by more than 63 million households in its first month on Netflix. Barker also recently won Best Actress at The British Urban Film Festival for her performance in How to Stop a Recurring Dream. Baghead adds to projects The Picture Company has with StudioCanal including Gunpowder Milkshake, premiering on Netflix this July, and the Liam Neeson thriller Retribution which is currently shooting in Berlin. 3. It’s been announced that Sydney Lemmon will play the mother of Charlie, the lead character of Blumhouse’s feature reboot of the Stephen King 1980 novel Firestarter. Blumhouse is collaborating with Universal and Weed Road Pictures and Lemmon will also be the wife of Zac Efron’s character in the film. Firestarter centers on a young girl who develops pyrokinetic abilities and is later abducted by a secret government agency that wants to harness her gift as a weapon. As Deadline reports, actress Ryan Kiera Armstrong will play Charlie. She has also been featured in American Horror Story and The Tomorrow War. The movie directed by Keith Thomas also stars Gloria Reuben and Michael Greyeyes. Scott Teams adapted the latest version. Lemmon recently starred as Ana Helstrom in the Marvel/Hulu series, Helstrom. She previously guest-starred in HBO’s Emmy-winning series Succession and AMC’s Fear of the Walking Dead, where she received a Saturn Award Nomination. She was also seen in Dan Gilroy’s Velvet Buzzsaw, an official selection of the 2019 Sundance Film Festival. Her next independent feature will be in Plain Fiction. On stage, Lemmon made her Broadway debut in The Parisian Woman. She has also been in numerous theatrical productions like Rancho Mirage, Animal Farm, and Romeo and Juliet. Source
  4. F9: The Fast Saga had a massive US opening at the Box Office the last weekend. While a couple years ago it might have been considered a smaller total, the $70 million domestic mark for the ninth installment of the Vin Diesel led franchise is the biggest opening in the United States in over a year and a half. The last film surpassing that total was Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker all the way back in December 2019. The US and the world as a whole, while it might not feel like it, is in fact a year and a half removed from the final chapter of the Skywalker Saga. After a year of closures, delays, and a massive pandemic, it seems as if the summer box office, at least in the US, is returning to some sort of normalcy. As the joke at the beginning of the pandemic was “that the world was healing,” now it seems that the box office and Hollywood are now healing. As mask mandates subside and vaccinations increase, the movie-going audience seems itching to go back to the theaters, though only for the proper movie. It was reported last week that In the Heights only made $11 million at the box office, when low projections had it at at least $20 million then on Sunday $13 million, until finally the actual numbers came out on Monday to roughly $11.4 million. However, with F9, a tried and true franchise, movie goers came out in droves on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. The film making $30 million, $22 million, and $17 million, respectively, over the weekend, according to Box Office Mojo. Each day made more than the total box office for In the Heights in its first weekend. This also beat the first big box office post the pandemic in A Quiet Place Part II, which made just around $50 million in its opening weekend. If F9 is any signal for the rest of the summer domestic US box office, it seems to signal a safe return to movie going and to the theaters. Coming to cinemas shortly are Black Widow, Space Jam: New Legacy, and The Suicide Squad. However, it is important to note that F9 was released only in theaters, while all of the other films listed do have hybrid releases on their respective streaming services. It will certainly be interesting to see how these films perform in a nearly post-COVID United States. Source

They also have a few European shows and festival appearances planned on either side of the tour for this year and next, including Primavera Sound Barcelona 2022. As The Love Continues is being hailed as one of Mogwai’s best releases in years, with some like mxdwn’s Drew Pitt comparing it to 2011’s Hardcore Will Never Die, But You Will. However, they still remain better known for their 1990s material, especially their debut 1997 album Young Team and 1999’s Come On Die Young. Over the years since, they have subtly added more electronic parts to their albums, and have been scoring a lot of television series and films, recently including ZeroZeroZero, Kin and contributions to Before the Flood alongside Gustavo Santaolalla and Trent Reznor & Atticus Ross of Nine Inch Nails. 6. Los Angeles glam-pop act Sparks shared a new single named “We Love Each Other So Much,” featuring vocals from Adam Driver and Marion Cotillard. It was recorded as part of the soundtrack for Annette, an upcoming Leos Carax film that’s set for 2021 release. The song is definitely suited for a theatrical experience. Strings rise ebb and flow dramatically while Driver and Cotillard sing the name of the song hauntingly. It goes through several phases, with drums coming in at one point before dropping out to hanging piano chords, then reprising the strings from the beginning. It follows a lead single named “So May We Start,” featuring the same leads as well as Simon Helberg and a collection of backing vocalists. That single appears to be the opening musical number from the film, while “We Love Each Other So Much” appears to be a more tender moment later on. The musical was inspired by Sparks’ music, rather than the other way around. “Initially, we conceived Annette as another Sparks album,” the pop duo states. “Yet this time it would be a narrative story that would consist of three main characters, a small enough ensemble that would allow us to also present the ‘opera’ live on tour… The music, story and album were finished and ready to go, which is where the story takes a huge detour. After meeting Leos at Cannes, we felt a real kinship, so we thought we would send him Annette, not expecting anything other than to show him what Sparks was currently up to. And lo and behold, he said he really liked the album and would like to consider it as his next project. We were happily surprised and elated at his reaction. As fans of Leos’ films, to now realize that he would be directing a film of ours was beyond our dreams.” They added via YouTube, “The characters live and breathe through the sensibility, tone, and lyrics of the music. In Annette, we set out to have virtually all the dialogue sung. It was a huge challenge, but one we are extremely proud of.“ Carax also released a statement on his decision to make a film based on Sparks’ music. “I discovered Sparks when I was about 14 – I stole a copy of Propaganda from an underground shop at La Défense because I liked the cover,” He said. “Not long after that I saw them live at the Olympia in Paris. Propaganda and their next album, Indiscreet, have been part of my life ever since. Their tracks are among the most joyous songs I know (although they’re poignant too, in places). For me, Sparks’ music is like a childhood home, but one free of ghosts. Without them, I don’t think I’d ever have done something I’d dreamt of doing ever since I first started out in cinema: making a ‘film in music.’” Annette is slated to open the 74th annual Cannes Film Festival on July 6, followed by theatrical release on August 6 and an Amazon Prime Video release on August 20. It’s the first English-language film from Carax, who is known for films like The Lovers on the Bridge (1991), Mauvais Sang (1986) and Holy Motors (2012). Sparks are also the subject of another 2021 film by another major director – a documentary on them by Edgar Wright called The Sparks Brothers. It premiered at Sundance Film Festival in January, detailing the story of Ron and Russell Mael’s history with Sparks. Source
  7. 83-year-old country/rockabilly legend Wanda Jackson announced her final album Encore will be released on August 20 via Big Machine/Blackheart. She had originally revealed that recording began on it back in 2018, featuring production by Joan Jett. Jackson shared a lead single from the album called “It Keeps Right On a Hurtin’,” which is a cover of a 1962 hit song by Johnny Tillotson. The legend called the inclusion “a nod to my country roots.” Her version of the single jumps to the opening vocals right at the start, “I cry myself to sleep each night/Wishing I could hold you tight.” She ditches the original’s string arrangement in favor of more traditional country guitar, piano, steel guitar and backing vocalists. This album announcement comes a couple years after Jackson announced she was officially retiring from performing, in 2019. At that time, a representative stated “This retirement is solely based on health and safety. It has been a wild ride. Thank you all for all the years of continued fandom and support. This is not the end, just the beginning of a new chapter. Join us as we congratulate the Queen of Rockabilly on over six decades of rip roaring live performances, priceless stories and countless shimmies.” Now, Jackson’s back for an Encore, and she says its among the most personal projects she’s ever released. “Right around the time I retired from performing and what I thought was the end of my career, I found myself back to writing songs with some of the great writers in Nashville,” Jackson said. “The songs you hear are truly my life story. This is the first time I have ever inserted so much of my personal life into my music. You’ll get a picture of my early life and have a peek into the closeness that my late husband Wendell and I had in our life together. I’m happy to share this with all of you — your constant love and support has seen me through the ups and downs of my 64-year career.” Some of those “great writers in Nashville” include Lori McKenna, Will Hoge, Luke Laird and Sonia Leigh. The album also features guest performances by Joan Jett, Elle King, Candi Carpenter and Pistol Annies’ Angaleena Presley. Jackson’s 64-year career spawned many radio hits, including “In the Middle of a Heartache,” “Let’s Have A Party,” and “Right Or Wrong.” She took a break from recording between 1988 and 2003, but came back with a comeback album called Heart Trouble in 2003. Her most recent albums include 2010’s The Party Ain’t Over (produced by Jack White) and 2012’s Unfinished Business (produced by Justin Townes Earle). Encore Tracklist: 1. Baby 2. Two Shots (featuring Elle King and Joan Jett) 3. You Drive Me Wild 4. Good Girl Down (featuring Angaleena Presley and Candi Carpenter) 5. It Keeps Right on a Hurtin’ 6. We Gotta Stop 7. Treat Me Like a Lady (featuring Joan Jett) 8. That What Love Is (featuring Joan Jett) Source
  8. Allegaeon vocalist Riley McShane and members of other metal bands like Your Last Wish, Entheos and First Fragment will be providing voice acting for characters from a new Dead by Daylight “chapter” featuring characters from Resident Evil. McShane will voice one of the two lead “Survivors,” Leon S. Kennedy, while Entheos vocalist Chaney Crabb will voice the other one, Jill Valentine. Other voice acted characters will include Gerard Vachon as Chris Redfield, Daneille Evans of Stridskvinna as Claire Redfield, Sébastien Croteau of Necrotic Mutation as The Nemesis, Roxana B.L. of Your Lash Wish as the female zombie voice and David AB of First Fragment as the male zombie voice. The voice acting was organized by a company called La Fabrique de Monstres, or The Monster Factory, which was co-founded by Croteau. In a statement on their contribution to the game franchises, Croteau commented, “It is a huge honor to participate in this amazing new chapter of Dead by Daylight. The game and the Resident Evil franchise are unique and hold a very special place in the hearts of survival/horror fans. To be able to participate in both is truly a dream come true. We were absolutely thrilled to be able to work with [the vocalists involved.] Not only are they insanely talented metal vocalists, but they played their parts perfectly as voice actors and actresses. We can’t wait for the metal and gaming community to hear what they have done for the game.” The vocalists behind the main characters also released statements. McShane stated, “I’ve been playing Resident Evil since its inception in the 90s on the original PlayStation, so hearing myself in the part of Leon is still something a little bit unbelievable to me. Getting to hear the other characters come to life by the voices of my friends and colleagues – some of which I have toured the world with – is also just so amazing.” Evans had similar thoughts, but on the Dead by Daylight side of things, “It was an absolute honor working on the new Dead by Daylight: Resident Evil chapter release alongside other amazing vocalists that I admire! I love playing Dead by Daylight, so hearing myself as Claire in the game was a surreal experience!” “Being able to work on a project that harkens back to something that resounded so strongly with me as a child is a bit mind-blowing,” Vachon added. “Not to mention getting to work with these incredibly talented people that I’ve looked up to who’ve brilliantly brought these characters to life.” “It is an honor to not only be a part of this chapter of Dead By Daylight and the Resident Evil franchise as the voice of the legendary Jill Valentine, but to be able to work alongside incredible metal vocalists to make these characters come to life,” Crabb commented. There’s a trailer for the game that can be watched below. More information about the game can be found here. It’s currently available to purchase on PC platforms, as well as PlayStation, XBOX One and Nintendo Switch. Source
  9. Although Lorde won’t be releasing Solar Power as a CD due to environmental concerns, she revealed that it will still be available at retail locations as an “eco-conscious Music Box.” The music box will come with extra visual material as well as a high-quality download code, among other things. A press release explains that this “first-of-its kind, discless format” is meant to serve as a replacement for CDs. It details that the “extra visual content” will include handwritten notes and Music Box-exclusive photos, among other minor additions. In addition to high quality download codes, the download card will include two exclusive bonus tracks and allow for fans to access some other surprises. Lorde explained the concept, “I decided early on in the process of making this album that I also wanted to create an environmentally kind, forward-thinking alternative to the CD. I wanted this Music Box product to be similar in size, shape and price to a CD, to live alongside it in a retail environment, but be something which stands apart and that’s committed to the evolving nature of a modern album.” She stated that the album’s largely inspired by nature. “The album is a celebration of the natural world, an attempt at immortalizing the deep, transcendent feelings I have when I’m outdoors,” Lorde said. “In times of heartache, grief, deep love, or confusion, I look to the natural world for answers. I’ve learned to breathe out, and tune in. This is what came through.” However, Lorde will still be selling Solar Power on vinyl. She recently explained her reasoning to The Guardian, “I’m not a climate activist, I’m a pop star. I stoke the fire of a giant machine, spitting out emissions as I go. There is a lot I don’t know.” Solar Power is set to be released on August 20 via Universal Music New Zealand. It was led by the title track, which Lorde described as “the first of the rays. It’s about that infectious, flirtatious summer energy that takes hold of us all, come June…” Her previous record was 2017’s Melodrama, which featured singles like “Green Light,” “Sober” and “Perfect Places.” The New Zealand-based pop star also revealed 2022 dates for a Solar Power world tour, including stops in New Zealand, Australia, Canada, the US, the UK and continental Europe. The US shows will include shows at venues such as the Opry House in Nashville, TN, Radio City Music Hall in New York, NY, The Met in Philadelphia, PA, The Chicago Theatre in Chicago, IL, WaMu Theatre in Seattle, WA, Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles, CA and a final US date at the Santa Barbara Bowl in Santa Barbara, CA. 13. During today’s ESPN NBA Countdown, Marvel Studios aired a new trailer for the upcoming film Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, which introduces Marvel’s next new hero. This new trailer gives us an even greater look at the plot of the film, which has been largely under wraps, and showcases a surprise Marvel character appearance. The beginning of this new clip establishes the conflict between Shang-Chi, played by Simu Liu, and his father Wenwu, played by Tony Leung. Shang-Chi is a great fighter, as seen in the trailer’s brief fighting sequence, but he does not want to turn to violence in the same way that his criminal father has. He changed his name and started a new life to distance himself from his father, but can only escape him for so long until he comes calling. The father and son face off in an intense battle which will likely be a highlight in the full film. In this trailer we are given just a short shot of it, which shows off the powers the two of them possess. The end of the trailer includes a surprise for attentive longtime Marvel fans, who may recognize Abomination, from the 2008 film The Incredible Hulk, fighting Shang-Chi in the ring. Abomination, played by Tim Roth, was the enemy of the Hulk then played by Edward Norton. The character has also been confirmed to appear in the upcoming Disney+ series, She-Hulk. Abomination may not be the only creature in this film, as we also see briefly what looks like a large tiger-like animal, and an underwater dragon. There are sure to be many new elements of magic and the fantastical in this film, adding on to the already massive mythos that the Marvel Cinematic Universe has been cultivating. Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings arrives in theaters on September 3, 2021. Source
  14. According to Deadline, sources have revealed that Harrison Ford suffered an accident while rehearsing a fight scene for Indiana Jones 5. While the extent of his injury was not immediately known, it was said to involve his shoulder. Director James Mangold is continuing to shoot around Ford’s injury while he receives the necessary treatment. The filming schedule will change as needed in the coming weeks as well. Disney has set the action thriller for a release date on July 29, 2022. Production for Indiana Jones 5 began earlier this month in Pinewood and other U.K. locations. Ford stars alongside Mads Mikkelsen, Phoebe Waller-Bridge, Boyd Holbrook, Shaunette Renée Wilson and Thomas Kretschmann. James Mangold, director of Logan, is taking over the reins from Steven Spielberg, who is still serving as a producer. John Williams is also returning as the composer, who has also worked on every score in the 40-year-old franchise. Ford suffered a serious injury in June 2014 when reprising the role of Han Solo in Star Wars: The Force Awakens. His leg was broken by a hydraulic door in an accident on the set of the Millennium Falcon spaceship at London’s Pinewood Studios. While the actor has gone through some tough ordeals, he is still in remarkable shape at age 78. Let’s hope his recovery goes smoothly again this time. Source
  15. Rachel Zegler’s upcoming breakout role as Maria in Steven Spielberg’s new retelling of West Side Story is still approaching this December, but she already appears to have another big role underway. According to Deadline, sources reveal that Zegler is set to star as Snow White in Disney’s new live-action adaptation. Marc Webb will direct and production is expected to begin in 2022. Webb tells Deadline, “Rachel’s extraordinary vocal abilities are just the beginning of her gifts. Her strength, intelligence, and optimism will become an integral part of rediscovering the joy in this classic Disney fairytale.” The original Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs cartoon was based on the Brothers Grimm fairytale and released in 1938. It was Disney’s very first animated feature and led the studio’s legendary slate of animated films to come. Insiders also tell Deadline that the live-action will expand on the story and music from the original. Benj Pasek and Justin Paul will write new songs for the movie. The Oscar and Tony-winning duo have been extremely successful with their work in La La Land, The Greatest Showman, and Dear Evan Hansen. Disney is taking its time with this adaptation to make sure it gets the music right, and Pasek and Paul seem just right for the job. As for the casting process, Zegler’s auditions impressed everyone, but exclusive footage from West Side Story was what really blew them away and got her the role. The decision also marks a step in the right direction for the studio in diversifying its Disney Princess characters, after getting Halle Bailey to play Ariel in the upcoming live-action The Little Mermaid movie. Zegler is no stranger to big auditions, beating out more than 30,00 actresses in West Side Story for the lead role of Maria as a 17-year-old high schooler. The new adaptation will be released on December 10 and also stars Ansel Elgort and Rita Moreno. Prior to that, she is also joining Zachary Levi in her first big comic-book movie for D.C.’s Shazam! Fury of the Gods. It’s exciting to see a young actress make her claim to fame under so many renowned titles already, so stay tuned to watch her on the big screen! Source
