  4. Rock group Earthless spoke out about repeated incidents of sexual violence in the crowd of their recent concerts. In a statement released to their social media, the band expressed their support for any victim of sexual assault – specifically at their shows. “Hello friends, it has been brought to our attention that women in the audience at one of our recent shows were the victims of sexual violence. We stand against these actions and want to express our support to every woman,” the statement read. “We wish for our shows to be a safe space for women and everyone to enjoy live music and share the love and joy that it brings to us all. We ask that anyone who isn’t a feminist or cares for the wellbeing of women to refrain from attending our shows and for them to take a hard look at themselves. We are deeply saddened and hope these behaviors end now.” Click to see the original post Earthless is currently on tour in support of their latest album “Night Parade of One Hundred Demons.” They began the tour April 1 in Long Beach, and have yet to travel through Portland, Seattle, Salt Lake City, Denver, Albuquerque and Tempe on April 12. 5. The California-based rock band, Primus, has announced their upcoming three-track EP titled Conspiranoid, beginning with their first single. “Conspiranoia,” a 12-minute track to introduce the album, was accompanied by a psychedelic and animated music video. The newly-released track shed light on the spiraling and endless abyss of conspiracy theories that have found their place in American politics, most notably, the far-right QAnon cult group who believe the government is run by a group of pedophiles, who conspired against former president Donald Trump. “I watched the distrust and divide grow between friends, colleagues, relatives, and the general population because of the consumption and digesting of disinformation, misinformation, warped information, and flat-out fairy tales being perpetuated by anyone with a slight hint of web design aptitude,” Les Claypool previously said in an interview. The song features confusing guitar chords, alongside panicked and delusional lyrics. Still, the album will also feature songs titled “Follow the Fool” and “Erin on the Side of Caution,” which seemingly tease a similar subject matter as their predecessor. Source
  6. Cocteau Twins vocalist Elizabeth Fraser and Massive Attack percussionist Damon Reece have unveiled a new single titled “Golden Air.” The new track comes from the Fraser and Reece’s upcoming EP, Sun’s Signature, set to release physically on June 18 and digitally in July. “Golden Air” marks the first official release of music from Elizabeth Fraser in 13 years. Old fans of Cocteau Twins and Fraser’s other work will be delighted to hear her famed soprano voice again, as the track instantly puts it against the track’s gorgeous atmosphere created by a variety of different instruments and sounds. Throughout “Golden Air,” we hear various different synths, guitars, and pianos used to create a truly unique soundscape that evolves in the track’s five minute runtime. Starting off softly and sparsely, the track slowly starts to pick up speed as it goes on, adding more and more bits of percussion before eventually adding in a full drum kit. The song concludes on a high note, adding in all of the instruments to create a massive climax including a small guitar solo, before fading out. Accompanying the new track is a visualizer created by Anthony Tombling Jr. In the visualizer, we see various shots of nature, emphasizing shots of bright trees and skies, along with time-lapsed scenes of clouds flying by and flowers growing. Watch the visualizer for “Golden Air” via YouTube below. Despite a lack of official solo-releases from Elizabeth Fraser, the vocalist has recently collaborated with Oneohtrix Point Never on their recent rendition of Tales From The Trash Stratum. Source
  7. The renowned rapper Pusha T has released a new track titled “Neck & Wrist,” along with an accompanying lyric video. The new song features the legendary rapper Jay Z and producer/rapper/singer Pharrell Williams. “Neck & Wrist” starts off by offering a catchy chorus from Pusha T leading into the first verse by Pusha. Displayed throughout the track is an beautifully eerie beat produced by Pharrell Williams that sets the tone for the track. Following the first verse by Pusha and second chorus, we hear a catchy chorus from Williams that acts as a bridge into Jay Z’s verse. In his verse, Jay Z goes after critics that suggest that challenge his role in hip hop. The single comes ahead of Pusha T’s currently untitled forthcoming album, announced last December. In regards to the new track and album, Pusha T explains in a statement that “My brand is all about creating masterpieces,” going on to say that “This is a legacy thing with me. This is all about being great. This is the realest real estate in hip-hop, and I’m the Martin Scorsese of it.” Watch the official lyric video for “Neck & Wrist” via YouTube below. “Neck & Wrist” follows after Pusha T’s previous single, “Diet Coke,” featuring production by Kanye West. Pusha T has recently been announced as a performer in the 2022 Float Fest, featuring Deadmau5, Vampire Weekend, Chance The Rapper and others. Source
  8. The Chicago-based punk band Rise Against has released a new music video for their track “Talking To Ourselves.” The track comes off of Rise Against’s previous album, Nowhere Generation, released in June of 2021. This new music video, directed by Ryan Valdez and produced by Derek Maher, is overloaded with imagery relating to our inability to escape the complacency and loneliness of modern life. In the video, we see people visiting an art museum where every piece seems to be a QR Code. At various points, we see people avoiding meaningful interactions with one another, and instead choosing to watch their phones. This music video reflects the meaning that Rise Against intend to portray in “Talking To Ourselves,” a song which the band describes as being about “watching yourself and the people around you fall into complacency. Despite your best efforts to get people’s attention, it feels like no one is listening. Sometimes we feel the urge to do something crazy, to disturb the peace, to jostle the world around us awake. Our actions might be seen as out of the ordinary, but they are acts of desperation when all else failed.” In a statement, Valdez explains that the music video intends “to yet again shed light on us as a society and to expand on the feeling that we have progressively lost our humanity.” In describing the QR code imagery, Valdez states that “In our video, the QR codes represent little windows to the world outside of our bubbles, only to be dismissed and swiped onto the next event.” Watch the new music video for “Talking To Ourselves” via YouTube below. The new video drops alongside news that Rise Against have begun their international tour, starting with an April 6 show in Toronto, Canada. Their co-headlined tour in the United States with The Used is set to begin on July 16. Source
  9. Mark Hamill shares his unpopular Star Wars opinion. The actor is most well known for his role as Luke Skywalker in the original Star Wars trilogy, though his extensive voice acting work is underappreciated. Hamill's role as Skywalker became more relevant in the last decade when JJ Abrams launched the final trilogy that centered on finding the legendary Jedi. Hamill reprised the role in Star Wars: The Last Jedi, where Skywalker dies from using a Force projection across the galaxy. Skywalker's death in The Last Jedi still has a lot of fans scratching their heads. The Mandalorian and Book of Boba Fett also credit Hamill for his CGI-aided appearances as a younger Jedi Master Skywalker trying to train Grogu, aka Baby Yoda. With the upcoming release of the Disney+ series Obi-Wan Kenobi, we will see Skywalker as a child. Hamill recently gave the young actor Grant Feely a warm welcome to the role. Some favorites from Hamill's long list of other works include voicing The Joker in Batman: The Animated Series, Muska in the English dub of Studio Ghibli's Castle in the Sky, and Fire Lord Ozai in Avatar: The Last Airbender. In a recent Twitter response, Mark Hamill shares his unpopular Star Wars opinion. The account Star Wars Stuff asks everyone to share their unpopular Star Wars opinion, and Hamill's response is, "The Star Wars Holiday Special was under appreciated." For most of the years since, the special was largely unpopular, though that might be starting to change. This reply by Hamill is the latest in his relatively active Twitter account. He also recently discovered on Twitter that James Gunn was filming a holiday special for Guardians of the Galaxy and that they're neighbors. See Hamill's reply below. Click to see the original post If Gunn and Hamill met up as they said they would on Twitter, Gunn probably gushed about his well-known love for the Star Wars: Holiday Special, despite its many ridiculous qualities, including full musical numbers and wacky, low-budget comedic elements. So much modern content, including Gunn's, uses precisely those things to significant effect, so it's no surprise that he loved the infamous Star Wars production. He brought Hamill around on his viewpoint, or maybe Hamill always secretly loved the holiday special. The Star Wars: Holiday Special came out in 1978. Hamill had just recovered from a terrible car crash where he had suffered extensive injuries. The wounds from his many reconstructive surgeries had supposedly not healed by the time they began filming the special, so Hamill was given makeup to hide the bruising. This was after the release of the first Star Wars movie in 1977, and before The Empire Strikes Back, so the ideas and direction of George Lucas' franchise were still new and less formed. Lucas came to regret the special, and the general view was that it missed the mark. However, the Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special might convince even more fans that it was just underappreciated. Source
  10. Actor Rufus Sewell has shared some old set photos of the late Heath Ledger from 2001's A Knight's Tale. The medieval action-comedy starred Ledger and Sewell, as well as Alan Tudyk, Shannyn Sossamon, Mark Addy, and Paul Bettany. Ledger played squire William Thatcher who fakes his identity as a knight in order to compete in a jousting contest and win the heart of a noblewoman. The film was a modest hit that showcased Ledger's natural charisma, leading to a number of notable roles in his short career, including Brokeback Mountain and The Dark Knight. Ledger took on the role of Thatcher in A Knight's Tale after appearing in 2000's The Patriot alongside fellow Australian Mel Gibson. That movie, alongside his work in 10 Things I Hate About You, would put him on the road to stardom. Knight's Tale writer/director Brian Helgeland cast the actor simply from seeing dailies from The Patriot before it was released (the director had previously worked with Gibson on Payback in 1999). Sewell played the villain in A Knight's Tale, a competing jouster named Count Adhemar. In celebration of what would have been Ledger's 43rd birthday, Sewell took to Twitter and posted some candid on-set images of his co-star from their days working on the movie. Sewell noted that he had found the photos after thinking "they were lost forever" in the post. In a follow up post, he shared an image of Ledger atop a horse, captioning it with "The pout," noting Ledger's expression in the shot. Take a look at the photos below: Click to see the original post Ledger died of a drug overdose in 2008 shortly after finishing work on Christopher Nolan's The Dark Knight and during the production of Terry Gilliam's The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus. The Dark Knight was released nearly six months after Ledger's death and would earn him a posthumous Best Supporting Actor Oscar for his portrayal of Joker. Ledger had previously been nominated for a Best Actor award for his work in Ang Lee's Brokeback Mountain. The tragic loss of Ledger is one that continues to be felt by his loved ones and fans around the world. Ledger left an indelible mark in his short, but memorable career, particularly with his performance as the Joker in The Dark Knight. However, the actor has plenty of gems scattered throughout his resume that are often overlooked, one of them being A Knight's Tale, which still holds up as a fun, inspired, and rousing crowd-pleaser. Seeing the actor in old photos is like experiencing his talent all over again and drives home the loss of his tremendous onscreen spirit. Source
  11. The 2013 Evil Dead remake's original ending has now been released by director Fede Alvarez, saying it was cut due to the suggestion of Sam Raimi, the director of the original Evil Dead trilogy. Alvarez made his film debut with Evil Dead and followed it up with Don't Breathe and The Girl in the Spider's Web. He's also set to direct a new untitled Alien film for Hulu that's unconnected to the larger canon. Evil Dead follows the survival of a group of people in a cabin in the woods when they accidentally summon demon spirits. Despite the premise and a few visual nods to the original film, the remake shared very little with its predecessor, lacking the inventive shoestring budget style and black humor of the original in exchange for an emphasis on gore. Alvarez has spoken before about his vision of the ending of Evil Dead, saying they only partially shot his original idea. On Twitter, Alvarez shared the clip they shot for his original ending. Similar to how the original The Evil Dead ended, the camera starts in a long shot before being pushed forward, as if it's from the point of view of someone, toward the protagonist (played by Jane Levy.) As she looks to see what's coming toward her, she turns and lets out a scream as the screen cuts to black. Watch the clip below: Click Here To View The Original Video. The original The Evil Dead ended in a similar manner, where Raimi mounted the camera to a bicycle as it was ridden through a cabin toward protagonist Ash (Bruce Campbell) in a seamless long take. In the tweet, however, Alvarez confirms that it was Raimi himself who suggested the ending be cut, since Levy's character had been through so much by the end of Evil Dead, and she therefore deserved to survive. The next film in the Evil Dead franchise, directed by The Hole in the Ground's Lee Cronin, will see release in 2022 on HBO Max. Source
  12. Actor and comedian Jim Carrey has explained what it would take for him to agree to a sequel to one of his classic movies. Becoming a superstar for his role as Ace Ventura in the 1994 blockbuster hit, Carrey’s unpredictable antics and rubbery facial expressions were at the center of his humor. As time passed, however, Carrey began to experiment with a broader range of comedies and dramatic films, many of which are now classics. Regardless of taking on impressive dramatic roles like comedian Andy Kaufman in Milos Forman’s Man on the Moon or Truman Burbank in The Truman Show, much of Carrey’s fanbase remains loyal to a handful of his most famous comedies. A sequel arrived to Ace Ventura in 1995, but it failed to reach the same heights as its predecessor. The same is true of the 2014 follow-up to Dumb & Dumber. These two films mark the only sequels that Carrey has returned for, much to the disappointment of many fans. Though Carrey has spoken about possibilities for sequels to some of his films, overall he approaches the concept with no small amount of skepticism. It’s an understandable attitude, as many of Carrey’s early comedies are now regarded as comedy classics. Then again, while Carrey isn’t particularly excited about the idea of making sequels, he recently discussed how the concept could become more appealing to him. During an interview with E! News, Carrey was asked if there was any chance he’d consider coming back for sequels to some of his biggest comedy hits. Rather than giving a simple yes or no answer, he spoke about his desire to push things forward with his characters and that it would take the vision of a great filmmaker with a completely new angle for him to agree. Carrey even singled out Christopher Nolan for an Ace Ventura sequel, saying: I think after the fact when there’s been a lot of years, unless some genius person, director, auteur comes to you with a completely new take on what’s going on, you know. If Chris Nolan came to me and said “I want to make Ace Ventura real and I want to do something, you know, something more interesting…” then I might listen. But for the most part, you know, after a certain time there’s not one cell in your body that is that person anymore so you end up just imitating what you did in the old days and the original inspiration isn’t there. Carrey’s reluctance does make sense, not just because his past sequel efforts haven’t hit the mark, but also because there can only be so much mileage in one character. Unless a new direction or challenge brings a different side of that character to light, there’s no real reason to return. Often money makes a big difference for many actors when it comes to returning for sequels. In the case of Carrey, however, he recently spoke of his retirement, stating that he has enough and has done enough. With an attitude like that, it’s clear that Carrey really is just interested in exploring intriguing angles in the characters that he plays. While it could very well be a lot of fun to see Jim Carrey return for a The Cable Guy 2 or The Truman Show 2, fans would do well to trust his instincts. After all, it was those very same instincts that made his most beloved films possible in the first place. What’s more, although sequels to fan favorites are initially exciting, it’s very rare that they end up delivering in the same way that the original films did. Perhaps one day Carrey will end up pairing with a filmmaker like Nolan for a sequel, but for now at least, it’s safe to say that he won’t be on board any time soon for sequels to his classic comedies. 13. The trailer for Hulu's new original movie, Crush, has just been released, teasing a teenage LGBTQ+ rom-com. The film is directed by Sammi Cohen (CollegeHumor Originals) and produced by American High, the studio behind Hulu's recent comedies, Plan B (2021) and Sex Appeal (2022). Kirsten King, and Casey Rackham make up the writing team as two LGBTQ+ writers hailing from BuzzFeed's former and current editorial team, respectively. The film features Rowan Blanchard (Snowpiercer), Auli’i Cravalho (Moana), Isabella Ferreira (Love, Victor), and Tyler Alvarez (American Vandal). Crush also stars Teala Dunn, Rico Paris, and Addie Weyrich, with Aasif Mandvi, Michelle Buteau, and Megan Mullally rounding out the authority figures of Hulu's recently dropped Crush trailer reveals that the new film will follow a CalArts hopeful who joins her school's track team in pursuit of her titular crush, but realizes that who she originally had her eye one might not be the one who steals her heart. Along the way she's aided by her self-described "platonic soulmate" of a best friend, who looks out for her by helping her navigate the LGBTQ+ love scene at their high school. The film appears to tackle the age old push-and-pull between arts and athletics, with the protagonist being on both sides of the fence. The trailer for Crush ends with a voice over from the lead saying "I'm learning that when it comes to art, you can't force it. It's a lot like love," which seems to encapsulate the heart of what Crush is getting at. Check out the full trailer below: Hulu's 2021 film, Plan B, was a teenage comedy that was received warmly by audiences and critics alike. However, their most recent endeavor to add to the genre with rom-com, Sex Appeal, had far less success with audiences and was ultimately doomed to be compared to the more successful Netflix show, Sex Education. Despite its hit-or-miss track record, there's a growing appetite for more teenage rom-coms that positively portray the experience of LGBTQ+ high schoolers, fueled by the success of films like Booksmart (2019) and The Half of It (2020). The trailer for Crush promises a diverse rom-com that could live up to the audience adoration of such films, while also capitalizing off of the smart comedy and friendship that made Plan B a success. Audiences will have the chance to see if Crush makes another successful debut for Hulu when it releases exclusively on the streaming platform on April 29. Source
  14. Clueless star Alicia Silverstone has sent a cute birthday message to her good friend and Clueless co-star, Paul Rudd. For fans of Rudd – particularly those who didn’t have him on their radar until he appeared in the MCU’s Ant-Man franchise, it may come as a bit of surprise to know that he had a small but vital role in the 1995 teen rom-com hit, Clueless. At the time of the film’s release, Rudd was still working his way into the Hollywood limelight. When Clueless arrived, however, few could have anticipated just what a hit it would be. Silverstone was in the midst of her strongest years as an actress during this period, gaining significant popularity after appearing in a music video by classic rock band, Aerosmith. Today, that hardly seems like a recipe for success, but in the mid 1990s, the band had a hit record on their hands, and Silverstone’s role as a jilted ex-girlfriend out for revenge received considerable attention. That degree of popularity was more than enough to attract audiences to Clueless, a coming-of-age tale about a group of spoiled Beverly Hills teens and their various high school experiences. Though Clueless primarily focused on Cher Horowitz (Silverstone), her step brother Josh (Rudd) gradually became an important part of her life. The film sees the two eventually become a couple, and even today, Silverstone and Rudd remain good friends. This much was still very clear as Silverstone sent Rudd birthday wishes via her official TikTok account. The video is accompanied by a short but sweet message from Silverstone to Rudd, which reads: "Friends since forever [heart emoji] Happy birthday Paul!" See the full video, which Silverstone also shared on her Instagram account, below: Click Here To Watch The Original Video. Rudd turned 53 on April 6, much to the surprise of many. For years, the Anchorman star’s uncanny ability to appear as though he hasn’t aged has been remarked on by fans and fellow celebrities alike. Recently, Seth Rogen called Rudd’s apparent inability to age “alarming”, jokingly pointing out that Rudd had been older than him when they first started working together. All jokes aside, however, Rudd and Silverstone’s continued friendship suggests that the chemistry they had together on screen was real, and that the pair have remained friends all these years despite never working together again after Clueless. Oddly enough, Silverstone’s latest upcoming role is Senior Year, a comedy about a popular cheerleader who awakens from a coma 20 years later and returns to her high school. While some might consider this a return to form for Silverstone, the film unfortunately doesn’t include Rudd. Still, seeing Silverstone take on a film that involves high school will undoubtedly have many thinking about a sequel to Clueless. There’s been a lot of buzz over the possibility in recent years, but to date, nothing has materialized. Hopefully, Silverstone and Rudd can take the project on at some point in the near future. 15. Alicia Vikander has opened up about feeling unprotected on set during nude scenes. The 33-year-old Swedish actress, has recently been cast as Catherine Parr in the Tudor-era thriller, Firebrand. Vikander has starred in numerous films in her career thus far, with one of her most well-known recent roles being Lara Croft in Tomb Raider and its upcoming sequel. Vikander began her career at the age of 14 in 2008, acting in various short films and minor television roles in Sweden, long before intimacy coordinators became key crew members. She came to international attention for her roles in the 2014 film, Ex-Machina, and later 2015's The Danish Girl opposite Eddie Redmayne, the latter of which won her an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress. She recently wrapped filming on the upcoming HBO remake of Irma Vep, which will itself deal with the topic of intimacy coordinators on set. In an interview with Harper's Bazaar, Vikander discussed the experience of shooting intimate scenes. She praised the work of the intimacy coordinators, who are now common in the industry, while expressing her disappointment that they weren't an industry standard sooner. Though she didn't name any specific films, she mentioned one troubling incident where an actor was left without a robe on set for hours. Read what Vikander said below: "The only thing that can’t be improvised is an intimate scene – you have to make choreography and stick to it. It’s the worst thing ever to do those scenes. I am very comfortable with my body and I’ve done quite a bit of nudity and sex scenes, but it’s never easy. [Intimacy coaches] should have existed at the beginning of my career. I’ve been in situations that were not fine, where I didn’t feel I was protected. [On one occasion] everyone was busy doing their own thing and, in the middle, you have an actor who sits there naked for a couple of hours. And someone is supposed to arrive with a robe, and they don’t. It comes afterwards – that was not right. I should have been looked after." Though Vikander never specifies which film sets in particular she's referring to, she has done nude scenes in 2017's critically panned Tulip Fever, the last-ever film to be released by The Weinstein Company, and in Netflix's 2019 psychological thriller, Earthquake Bird. Intimacy coordinators have only really become standard in the film and television industries after the revelations of #MeToo and the Harvey Weinstein scandal in 2017, which led actors to demand better protection and safeguards during intimate scenes. Their job is to explain the choreography of intimate scenes to cast members and to be a voice for any concerns that they might have if there are aspects that make them uncomfortable. Vikander's comments speak to the importance of intimacy coordinators on set and the huge steps that the industry has taken in order to help safeguard actors. Even if no harassment took place, an actor being left naked on set for hours suggests a worrying lack of concern for the welfare of cast members. Though intimacy coordinators are still not employed on every set that requires them — Netflix didn't start using them until Sex Education — they're thankfully becoming increasingly more commonplace. As Vikander's career continues to go from strength to strength, changing practices in the industry hopefully mean that she won't have to feel left unprotected again. Source
  16. Director Sam Raimi comments on the Professor X and Illuminati theories, as they are seemingly appearing in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. Phase 4 has been busy exploring multiple new territories as Marvel Studios is entering a new era after the Infinity Saga's end. One of the new storytelling devices for the ever-growing MCU is the concept of the Multiverse. As it's getting more and more popular in shared universes, the MCU has been playing around with the idea of alternative universes and doppelgangers. Following Spider-Man: No Way Home, Doctor Strange 2 will be the next franchise to continue the Multiverse trend. While uniting Spider-Men of three generations was a massive success, Doctor Strange 2 is reportedly upping the ante on that front. One of the recent trailers caught universal attention as Charles Xavier, a.k.a. Professor X, seemingly appears as a mystery figure, with X-Men star Patrick Stewart's voice being heard. The supposed return also sparked speculation that Professor X's involvement will also see the MCU's introduction of The Illuminati. Everyone involved is, as expected, staying very silent on both fronts, including Stewart, who has been pulling an Andrew Garfield in several recent interviews. Raimi, who is returning to the superhero genre through Doctor Strange 2, since 2007, is joining his fellow colleagues in the secrecy. In a recent interview with Fandango, the filmmaker was directly asked about the scene from the trailer where Stewart's voice was heard, along with the tease of Illuminati. Like many of the talent that works for Marvel Studios, Raimi kept his lips sealed as he stated the following: "I couldn't promise you that Patrick Stewart's in the picture. That's all that Marvel will let me say." Even though there is a lot of evidence pointing to both being in Doctor Strange 2, it's not stopping Marvel Studios from having its strict rules on spoilers. Aside from Stewart's consistently hilarious statements in past interviews, the famous Marvel group did "accidentally" get confirmed to be part of Doctor Strange 2, despite the secrecy. During the middle of March, the Illuminati was referenced via caption on an official photo from Empire Magazine, that said "Strange stands before the Illuminati." Since the caption was never corrected, nor did the publication have to retract its release, it's evident that this was something Marvel Studios wanted to be out there. Regardless of the lack of clear statements from either Raimi or Stewart, it's still fascinating to see what roles Professor X and the Illuminati will potentially play in Doctor Strange 2. Given the massive love for Stewart's portrayal of the iconic Mutant, it will be a huge deal to see him engage with MCU players, in one way or another. The bigger mystery, however, is what other Multiverse cameos will Doctor Strange 2 include in the story. As Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness is officially exactly one month away from hitting theaters, fans will know very soon what Raimi's film has in store for the MCU. Source
  17. Jake Gyllenhaal recalls a memorable visit to renowned director Michael Bay's Transformers-filled house. Gyllenhaal first hit the scene in 1991, making his youthful acting debut in City Slickers as Danny Robbins. The esteemed actor would later make his mark in breakthrough roles in October Sky and Donnie Darko. With a slew of acting credits to his name, Gyllenhaal recently entered the Marvel Cinematic Universe as Mysterio, leading to a showdown with Tom Holland in Spider-Man: Far From Home. Gyllenhaal's upcoming projects include a project with Guy Ritchie dubbed The Interpreter and a leading role alongside Yahya Abdul-Mateen II in Bay's new 2022 thriller, Ambulance. Bay directs the first five films in the Transformers film franchise after initially dismissing them as "stupid toy movies." However, Bay signed on and ultimately formed an attachment to the Transformers mythology, wanting to work with the legendary Stephen Spielberg. Bay is well-known for using special effects and CGI to create incredible onscreen visuals, well-documented throughout the Transformers franchise and in his other major motion pictures. Gyllenhaal and co-star Abdul-Mateen recently appeared on a talk show to discuss their upcoming film, Ambulance, and a memorable experience with Bay. In a recent episode of Jimmy Kimmel Live via YouTube, Gyllenhaal recalls visiting Bay's Transformers-filled house. In his statement, Gyllenhaal describes stumbling across a yellow car in the famed director's living room and adventuring through an environment resemblant to Jurassic Park before even arriving at the house. He also shares how it was easier to run into Bumble Bee than to find his co-star in the place. See Gyllenhaal's statement below: "It took a while for us to find each other there; it's a very large home. It's like a huge, huge house. It's huge, and it's filled with Transformers memorabilia. I ran into Bumble Bee before I ran into him (Abdul-Mateen). I swear to God, I walked in there, and there's like a yellow car in his living room. It's like you go through Jurassic Park before you get to his home." Again, Bay is well-known for creating big-budget, over-the-top action films laying heavy on special effects and stylistic cinematography. From Armageddon to Pearl Harbor and the Transformers films, it is apparent that Bay tends to ramp up the intense action sequences and top it all off with incredible explosions. To hear Bay's home described in such a way by Gyllenhaal is not much of a surprise, given the director's propensity to embody a larger-than-life persona. To complement his home, Bay has also owned a $50 million Gulfstream G550 jet along with a Bentley, a Range Rover, an Escalade, a Ferrari, a Lamborghini, and two Camaros from the Transformers franchise. Regarding Ambulance, Bay appears to step back from the outlandish action-laden and special effects-driven cinematography he is most notably known for. Instead, the film will be a little more character-based, relying less on the visualizations which have begun over-shadowing his projects in recent years. However, since Ambulance is essentially one long car chase, audiences will likely get their fair share of Transformers-related thrills upon the film's release on April 8, 2022. Source
  18. Avengers: Endgame director Joe Russo reveals why the MCU films have so much humor in them. Having grossed $25.6 billion at the worldwide box office, the MCU is the most successful film franchise of all time, and over the past 14 years, audiences have become wrapped up in the characters and the world of these heroes. The films stand as some of the biggest pieces of shared cultural moments of the 21st century, as the dialogue has become quotable in everyday conversation. One defining aspect of the MCU is the franchise's sense of humor, which originated back in 2008's Iron Man, due to the film not having a finished script and having to rely on Robert Downey Jr.'s improv skills, which director Jon Favreau was well suited for because of his comedy background. The franchise would further be defined in The Avengers as the banter and wit of the script was one of the film's highlights, and subsequent MCU films have gone tried to capture that. The comedic elements of the MCU have now become just as much of an attraction for audiences as the action scenes. Russo reveals exactly why the MCU films have so much comedy in them and says it is the key to Marvel's success. While speaking with Deadline, via TheDirect, Russo revealed that Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige likes to test Marvel films to see how audiences are enjoying them. Feige wants audiences to have a good time, and part of the way to track that is with humor. Russo said: "Well, Marvel’s secret sauce is that Kevin likes the films to be entertaining, right? And entertaining typically involves humor, and I think that Kevin’s very big on testing movies and I think he likes to sit in the test screening and hear the response. So the audience’s laughing, you can hear their response. You can understand, ’Okay, every 2 minutes [they] are getting some enjoyment out of the movie,' and that’s a strong way for him to gauge how the movie will perform with an audience, right? So I think humor is very important to him.” The MCU style of humor has become so popular that it has been mimicked by other studios and has now grown a negative reception among some audience members as "Marvel Humor." Some take issue with the franchise's insistence on humor as they feel it often deflates rather serious moments, and some criticize the franchise's inability to take anything seriously, like mocking Doc Ock's name in Spider-Man: No Way Home, for example. Yet, even under all the humor, the MCU has been able to use that as a way to get more lofty themes into their films from racial politics in Black Panther to looking at the devastations of colonialism and impacts on refugees in both Captain Marvel and Thor: Ragnarok, or the complicated nature between children and parents in Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings. However, despite the reaction to Marvel's use of humor, inserting comedy into action films is not something Marvel created. In fact, it very much shows that MCU not only draws from comic books to inform their films but cinematic influence as well. Raiders of the Lost Ark features a number of well-played comedic beats that subvert audiences' expectations, the biggest being when Indiana Jones shoots the swordsman, which was not in the original script. Pirates of the Caribbean, James Bond, and Star Wars are other major franchises that found ways to incorporate humorous jokes, quips, and protagonists into their stories to keep audiences entertained. Marvel Studios is just following in the footsteps of the greats. Source
